The Picnic
The Aldbrough Feast Village Picnic is held on the final Saturday of Feast Week. Newcomers to the village are told that they have to apply for leave of absence to miss it.
It is organised by making lists of what everyone is able to provide as their contribution to the food. This year barbecues were provided by the Feast committee so that people could cook their own meat there but a selection of other salads and desserts were available in the hall as usual.
For the third year entertainment was provided by Tony Hill who does a great range of songs, dances and musical games for all ages and helps the unsure through the routines of the dances with his calls.
Here he is early on in the evening having a welcome break from singing |
Balloon Race
During the week David and Kay Banks had been selling balloons for a balloon race. Well before the end of the week they had all been sold and the release was due at the Feast Picnic. To great acclaim they were released |
Bye Bye Balloons
The balloons were last seen heading north west towards Caldwell and Barnard Castle.
When the tags started returning they had reached places such as Bridlington and other places that were definitely south east.
The end of the competition has formally been set for 30 September 2006 so we await the result with anticipation and trepidation.
Some time later the web site below was sent to us just to make us feel really guilty.
On 15 October we learned that the winning balloon had been found on a golf course ib Grimsby and was the balloon of the Feast Chairman, David Robinson. Hmmm...... |
The Scarecrow Competition
Also during the week - another initiative by Kay and David Banks - scarecrows had been gracing the Aldbrough scene. The judging had been carried out in secret on Sunday 13 August and the result was announced at the Picnic.
First prize went to Rachel Connolly. Here she is with her First Prize rosette. |
Elf 'n' Safety
and here's a picture of the politically incorrrect scarecrow that won first prize.
I hope we've got these the right way round |
Dancing
 | | Soon it began to rain and it was necessary to move the music and dancing into the hall. The lady in the red jumper was a visitor from New Zealand. She and her husband hadn't come just for the Feast but were delighted to join in the activities while they were staying in the village. |
|
Another Scarecrow
 | | The second prize went to this scarecrow which was entered by the chairman of the Feast committee. Looks like both the chairman and the judges may be showing their political colours here. |
|
The pace hottens
 | | As the evening wore on the dancing became more and more exuberant. Someone will always start a conga and here it is before it disappeared out of the hall door. |
|
3rd Prize Scarecrow
 | | The third prize went to Valerie Cook for her Aldbrough on Sea scarecrow. |
|
The Raffle
 | The Grand Draw is one of the major sources of income for the Feast with lots of prizes mainly donated by people in and around the village. This year the Chairman didn't win anything for a change. I hope he actually bought some tickets.
We didn't get a picture of the draw being made so here is more dancing. |
|
Hokey Cokey
 | One of the great features of the picnic is that it is for all ages in the village.
Here's young and not so young joining in the hokey cokey with gusto.

Tony Hill
Having started with a picture of Tony partaking of the barbecue, let's close with a picture of him doing what he was really there for - providing a really good evening's musical entertainment.
Thanks Tony. Aldbrough really enjoyed it. |
