Duck Race
 | The Great Aldbrough Duck Race is the highlight of the Aldbrough Sporting Calendar and takes place at High Noon on the Aldbrough Beck on the final Sunday of Feast Week.
If you are late, you miss the Grand Tip as David Robinson, Feast Chairman, cascades the ducks over the bridge and into the swirling, turbulant waters of the Aldbrough beck.
And I was late. So off they go down the stream. |
|
The Rapids
The ducks sped downstream, the waters of the beck having been swelled by Thursday, Friday and Saturday's torrential rain.
As they reached the rapids they tumbled down the white foaming maelstrom into the deep pools below. |
Illegal Help
 | | In places the waters were smooth and calm and there were some who gave the ducks a little illegal help to encourage them on their way. We hope you weren't checking the numbers on their bottoms. |
|
Numbers
 | | This is how the ducks are identified. They all have a number. I wonder if the ducks that have my chosen numbers on them ever get to the starting line. Maybe they need to be put with a better trainer. |
|
The Finishing Line
It's always a difficult and delicate task to decide just which are the winning ducks. Here's the Chairman again exercising his severely impartial judgement on those crossing the finishing line assisted by a posse of helpers trying to stop any wayward ducks from escaping down to the Clow Beck and on into the River Tees.
|
Retrieving the Ducks
Once the winners have crossed the line the peleton has to be retrieved from the beck. Here's one of our helpers finding it's all a bit too much.
Maybe he felt that some of the others just weren't pulling their weight. |
The Prizes
Then the prizes have to be awarded and the Grand Presentation is performed by the Chairman. Here he is announcing the lucky winners - or maybe he's not announcing the winners just yet. Looks like there's money changing hands here with Lesley who organises the allocation of ducks.
Hmmmm - have we a scandal on our hands? |
The Winners
Well here he is actually announcing the winners.
Doesn't look like he's too certain about it. |
A Lucky Winner
And here's one of them. Numbers 1, 2 and 3 snook away before we could even get the camera focused on them. But in fourth place came Barrie Ross all the way from Auckland to be placed in the Aldbrough Duck.
So Auckland's no big deal, you say. Ah! but Barrie has come from Auckland New Zealand. What you can achieve when you win prizes in duck races! |
Swag
This picture looks like one of those cartoon burglars with a bag over his shoulder labelled 'SWAG'
We have been assured that it is just a load of plastic ducks in there being put away until next year when once again they will brave the terrors of the Aldbrough Beck in another thrilling Aldbrough Annual Duck Race.
Be there! |
