Songs of Praise

Also on Sunday 20 August this year was the open air Songs of Praise service.
Usually this is on the first Sunday of the Feast but this year there was a clash with a non-Feast event and so it was decided to close the Feast with the Songs of Praise.
As always a list of 24 popular hymns were distributed with the schedule and people were asked to vote for the ones they wanted. There is also a space for any other suggested hymns.
The proviso is always given 'In church if wet' and Sunday afternoon had been decidedly showery.
As the congregation gathered Stan Haworth was very much in favour of moving into the church. However, several members of the congregation as they began to assemble spoke very strongly in favour of remaining outside.
Stan was convinced that it would rain but agreed to go along with the majority decision.
As the first hymn was under way, the heavens opened and the umbrellas appeared as if by magic.

But then

Once the first hymn, (Lord of the Dance) was over the sun came out and shone for the rest of the evening.
The music was provided this year by Michael Moran from Melsonby and we were also joined by members of the Methodist congregation from Melsonby (who now have to worship at Barton) One of their members, Brian Heap, read a short passage from the Book of Proverbs and Stan Haworth gave a short address about the hymn 'Abide with Me'

What do we sing?

How do we choose the hymns to include? A voting slip with a list of 24 hymns plus a space for any special request, is sent out with the Feast schedules.
The original list includes some that nearly made it last year, some that have a 'rural' flavour (Loving Shepherd, harvest hymns etc), evening hymns, some that are 'a jolly good sing' and this year we asked the school what were favourites of the children there - modern hymns.
The final selection is eight hymns that have got votes. The ones with the highest numbers of votes are always selected. Sometimes one with a slightly lower number of votes than others will be included just to give a balance.
As always where votes are needed, if you don't vote, you are less likely to get what you want and have no cause then to complain.
Our picture shows Stan taking refuge not from the rain but from the sun which by this point in the service was shining directly into his eyes.
The Songs of Praise rounded off another successful Feast and was a chance to give thanks for all that it gives us not just during Feast Week but throughout the year.
