The other scarecrows

There were scarecrows all over the village and in addition to the 3 prize winners two more were highly commended.
On this page we'll show you the pictures and let you vote for your favourite using the reader poll on the side of the page.
This is one of the Highly Commendeds - a Viking by Ian and Jan Poole

Highly Commended

Also Highly Commended was this Mermaid sitting in an 'underwater grotto'

Aldbrough's Tiger

There are several keen golfers in the village and that showed in this entry.

A Lady Golfer

... and also in this very smart looking lady golfer. I hope she's allowed in the club house on equal terms.

Ballerina

A little more graceful was this pretty ballerina - though she is a little bandy legged.

The Drinker

Several scarecrows seemed to feature drunks. I hope that doesn't give the wrong impression of our quiet and refined population.

Another Inebriate

This one was outside the post office looking very much the worse for wear.

Enjoying a drink

This one is not so bad - just a gardener enjoying a relaxing drink after a hard day hoeing.

The Hippy

However this hippy looking thoroughly stoned on goodness knows what was to be found outside the house of a most respectable lady. Are there skeletons in the cupboard?

Builders

Another repeated theme was builders and other workmen. Here's a sort of Bob the Builder

Another builder

This builder doesn't look quite so keen to get on with the job. Can he do it? Obviously not!

Painter

While someone else is getting their house painted.

Other Occupations

There were several other occupations represented such as this chef from Fawlty Towers.

Who's He?

And the guy with the clip-board. Well he always looks as if he's doing something and is terribly busy - but no one ever knows just who he is or what he does.

Traffic Warden

Here's the one we all love to hate unless you're the Beatles and her name is Rita, of course.

Less Savoury Occupations

Some of our scarecrows were engaged in less savoury occupations, certainly not ones that you would admit to; this burglar, for example.

The Tramp

.. or this tramp who looks very comfortable on his bench overlooking the village green.

Pastimes

Several pastimes were represented. This crusty looking old buffer has been out shooting pigeons.

Cricketer

And the cricketer, who's obviously just been bowled out is in the garden of one of the village's most fanatical football fans. You can tell which team he supports from his house name.

The Italian Stallion

However, football did not go entirely unrepresented. You likea da outfit, eh?

Water Sports

Two for water sports were this exotic Smurfer (remember the Smurfs?)

Wind surfer

and this incredibly accurate wind surfer. Not an easy activity to do on the Aldbrough Beck.

Another lady

Lady scarecrows are far less common than gentleman scarecrows but here's one that we've called Mopsie, because she had a lovely head of hair made from a floor mop. Excellent.

Nessie

Even rarer than lady scarecrows were animal scarecrows. This one was entered by someone who lives a little too far outside the village for the judges to include it in their walkabout. But it's a true original.

That's all. This looks like being repeated next year. Everyone had great fun making them and those who didn't, still enjoyed walking around the village looking at them. Well done every one.

Have a look at our poll and vote for your favourite. Unfortunately we can't list them all there.
