Wednesday

Wednesday is always the evening of the quoits match but unfortunately we have no pictures of it.
In a new venture, just for this year, there was an exhibition of the wonderful collection of patchwork quilts made by Mrs Emily Gardner, now aged 90, who lives in Aldbrough. She had made this collection over a period of about 40 years but most of them had simply gone into storage once finished.
Most of Wednesday was taken up with setting up the exhibition in the village hall and early in the day a team from the Ryedale Folk Museum came to see them as they had provisionally agreed to accept them as part of their collection.
Once they saw them they were absolutely taken aback with the scale and quality of what was being offered to them.
Some of the quilts will be on exhibition there during October 2006 and there will be a full exhibition devoted to them during 2007.
Below is a link to the Ryedale Museum site to see more about what else is in the fascinating museum there.
Our picture shows Mrs Gardner with one of her larger quilts with the Rydale Museum team. Behind them is a display about quilting showing the various stages in making patchwork and some of the patterns and techniques used.

Thursday and The Exhibition

The exhibition was open on Thursday and Friday afternoons and several people came from outside the village because they had heard about this collection. People visiting were encouraged to make a donation which would go to St Theresa's Hospice in Darlington which is Mrs Gardner's preferred charity.
In addition to the quilts there were numerous patches made up but not sown togther, quantities of cloth remnants some of which were sold to add to the sum raised and several cotton dresses and skirts from the 1960s and 70s that had been kept to use for patchwork but had not been touched. With the generous assistance of Boyes Stores, these dresses were displayed on shop window mannequins with suitable hats added by Mrs Gardner and Brid Wynn (who first discovered the quilt collection) Boyes also gave a sum to cover the cost of hire of the special display stands needed for the quilts which the Feast greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately all our pictures were taken on the Wednesday. Here are some of the assembled quilts with Mrs Gardner and the Ryedale Museum people.

Also on Thursday evening there was the Feast Car Treasure Hunt. By then the weather was wet and miserable but it was greatly enjoyed and won by Mr & Mrs Bainbridge who don't live in Aldbrough but have won, amongst other things, the obligation to set next year's route.

Prize Quilt

It is impossible to show all the quilts here but we've put this picture in because it shows one of the quilts that has not gone to the museum as it had been promised as a gift. This quilt was entered for a WI county competition during the 1980s and won first prize. It is a wonderful design giving the impression of a stained glass window.

Friday - near disaster

Friday 18 August was wet, wet, WET! It was pouring down and we wondered if anyone would want to come to the village hall.
But worse was to follow. When we got into the hall we found that the roof just behind where Mrs Gardner is standing in this photograph, had developd a leak and water was not just dripping but gently flowing in onto a plastic chair below where it was forming a puddle. Then another leak began nearby.
Fortunately a check of all the quilts, especially those that were displayed by spreading them over tables like beds rather than hanging vertically, showed that there were no other roof leaks. Subsequently one of the quilts was found to have soaked up some dampness from an adjacent window frame but it was easily dried with a cool fan.
An urgent call was put out to John Gill, a member of the hall committee who we knew would be able to help out and he came down immediately to identify the source of the leak and at least stop it until a repair could be done.
Friday afternoon was busier with visitors than Thursday had been and the eventual dismantling of the exhibition had to be delayed until several late arrivals had had a chance to look around.
We were extremely grateful to the Gainford Quilters who had augmented the stands hired from Durham with some of their own and who helped to roll and wrap all the quilts up at the end of the day ready for collection by the Ryedale Museum.

Subsequently the Feast was able to send cheques totalling £146 to St Theresa's. To find out more about their work, please use the link below.
