Let's Start at the Beginning:

A very good place to start......

This website is about my friend Bryan, who was badly burned by fire in an accident at his home. It is a story of events and how he coped with his life after he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of a local hospital. After four weeks he was moved into the Burns Unit at the same hospital.

It's a story of bravery, a fight for survival, and enduring a lot of pain and discomfort. It's also published as an encouragement to others that it is possible to carry on life if you look at things positively throughout the recovery period, a strong belief in the power of prayer, and have good friends to give you encouragement.

Bryan's beliefs are based on a poem he found in a magazine, which was written by Ellen Bailey:

'DON'T QUIT'

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road your trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and its turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When they might have won, had they stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victors cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when your hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit!

His story starts on Friday 16th March 2007, the day of the accident when we had been to a large market near to his home, and afterwards to a nice little pub which served meals. Bryan's love of the countryside took us to a highspot in the Derbyshire Dales, where we looked over a panorama of pine trees and hills, in springtime colours, and a warm breeze.

From there we went to a nearby Garden Centre to collect my car, and said our farewell's, each heading to our homes. His last words to me were 'Call me at six o'clock to let me know you got home safe, the traffic's busy today'. He alway's said something like that, because he was that kind of person, who cared about the welfare of other people.

......

I rang Bryan at the time he had asked me to but got no reply; I rang again at 9. 00pm that night and still there was no reply. I remembered that his sister Amelia had been taken into hospital the week before , as she was very ill, and I consoled myself that perhaps she had been taken worse, and he had gone to sit with her overnight. However I continued to call him on his home telephone and his mobile throughout the night. I began to worry as he was aware that I was at home, and thought that at least he might of called me to tell me. This I continued to do until 11.00am the next day which was Saturday; when I decided something was wrong, and I set off to go to his bungalow.

Arriving there just before noon I noted that things appeared quite normal; his car was parked by the kerb, so I got out and walked towards the side entrance. Opening the gate I noted that by the side door was his she turned on it’s side, and further up the path was his jumper lying on the path. I proceeded walking forward , and turned left to the back, whereupon I saw some coins scattered on the ground. Immediately I realised that something was wrong, and turned to retrace my tracks; it was then I noticed the net curtain was pulled to one side, and I looked through the window. It was difficult to see in the room, and after a few minutes I realised why, because the whole of the room inside was black, and the walls were covered in a layer of black smoke; there had obviously been a fire!
