Who are the Argus Singers??

In rehearsal

We are a mixed voice choir based in Chester le Street. Originally formed by former members of the Durham County Youth Choir but supplemented over the years by friends and other people who love singing, our membership is never more than 50. Our repertoire is varied, composed mainly of part songs - a typical programme may include works by anybody from Bach to Sondheim, taking in Stanford, Gershwin, the Beach Boys and Billy Joel along the way! What never varies is our consistent commitment to the highest quality sound and a love of making music.

We perform concerts throughout the year either by request from local organisations or organised by ourselves, and our annual Christmas concert at Chester le Street Methodist Church has become an unmissable feature of Christmas for many in the area. We have also produced several recordings, performed on local radio and television and have recently won the mixed voice choir class, gaining a Distinction at Consett Music Festival.

We rehearse on Saturday aftenoons at Chester-le- Street Methodist Church, normally every 2-3 weeks, and maintain a repertoire of works to draw on for our concerts. We are always interested in welcoming new members who share our commitment to the highest quality of singing, and would particularly welcome new men to join the tenor and bass lines. Membership is by informal audition but anyone who thinks they might be interested in joining us is welcome to attend a rehearsal without committing themselves. E-mail for more details if you think you might be interested in joining us.

If you might like to book a concert, contact us for more details - or why not come to one of our concerts to experience The Argus Sound for yourself - we guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Tony Harries

Tony took over the baton when our previous conductor, David Harris, left us in 2009 after a 30 year association with the choir.
We'd like to welcome Tony to the podium, although he's no stranger to the Argus, having sung with the choir and accompanied us over a number of years.

Janet Trewick

We'd also like to welcome Janet as our accompanist who has bravely stepped into Tony's shoes. We only have one or two new pieces to learn: she has all of them!
Thanks Janet. We appreciate it.
