As a venue for summer concerts, Auckland Castle provides the ideal location. While conveniently located just off the market place in Bishop Auckland, the medieval building which has parts dating back to the 1100s, has its own extensive grounds and deer park. There is parking for the concerts in the grounds, and wine and soft drinks are available at the interval. A stroll round the beautiful gardens at the interval with a glass of wine adds an extra special touch to an English summer concert.
In terms of the acoustics, the throne room is very highly thought of by all the musicians that play there. This fact, coupled with the new Steinway piano that the Society purchased in 2002, prompted the pianist Sarah Beth Briggs to say after her last concert there, "Definitely one of the best venue/piano combinations in the UK!" and "super venue and atmosphere there".
If you have not attended a concert at the Castle, you don’t know what you are missing.
Events in previous years have featured: Vanbrugh String Quartet, Nash Ensemble of London, Cambridge Baroque Camerata, Emma Johnson, Leland Chen, Noriko Ogawa, Kungsbacka Piano Trio, Belcea String Quartet, Sir Thomas Allen, Susan Milan, Martinu String Quartet,Brodsky String Quartet, Alison Balsom and many other world class musicians.
Outside the summer series of 6 concerts, the Society holds a special Christmas Concert in December each year. Festive fare is served during the interval and a good time is had by all!
