BARNINGHAM is a small village of some 170 people and about 70 houses, mostly on one main street, but including some outlying farms.
It is situated between the two historic, Georgian market towns of Barnard Castle (6 miles) and Richmond ( 10 miles).
It is a rural setting within a designated 'Conservation Area' and adjacent to the 'North Yorkshire Dales, National Park', an area of outstanding natural beauty
The village itself, has attractive, stone built houses, cottages and farms, many very old, dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
There is a large village green, which runs down the south side of 'The Street', for more than half its length. The appearance, is typical of a North Yorkshire village, although since 1974 it has been just inside the County Durham boundary.
'The Street', measured at the fountain, is 706 feet above sea level and runs from the east uphill to Barningham moor in the west.
There is a public house, 'The Milbank Arms'; a church, 'St. Michael’s and All Angels' and a Village Hall, the former village school, 1875 to 1934, which is now a very busy social centre.
The Village Shop and Post Office closed about 1990; the green telephone kiosk is still to be seen outside.
Market Day and Animal Mart, at Barnard Castle, is held each Wednesday. At Richmond, market day is Saturday.
A Farmer’s/Producer's Markets is held on the first Saturday of the month, at Barnard Castle.
Barningham is also within an easy drive of Middleton-in-Teesdale (20 miles), Darlington(18 miles), Durham (30 miles), Newcastle (50 miles).
Other places within a reasonable driving distance are York and Harrogate; Whitby on the east coast, also Kirkby Stephen and the Lake District to the west across the Pennines.
There is some good bed and breakfast accommodation on local farms and in holiday cottages, in and around Barningham.
'The Morritt Arms Hotel' and the 'A66 Motel', are nearby.
There are some very good, reasonably priced ‘eateries', to suit all tastes and pockets, mainly in Public Houses, but you will need to take a short drive.(within a six mile radius)

The countryside around is very pretty, unspoilt by development and in parts quite wild.
The village forms a good base for walking, cycling (though a bit hilly),riding horses and observing flora and fauna.
