Barclay's 'dancing girls'
In 1937 Dorothy Calvert joined The Bank on an annual salary of £71.10s 0d plus annual Large Town allowance of £10.8s 0d. At that time all female staff had to be trained typists before they could be employed with Barclays and had to leave if they married. After a few months she joined a dance troupe made up of Barclays Collingwood Street staff, except for one who was the manager's daughter (far left on photographs).
The bank held a concert in early 1938 at a Jesmond theatre with male singers and our dancing girls. The girls were trained by one of the original 'Tiller Girls', who of course I am not old enough to remember. | |

They were disbanded when war broke out and Dorothy went on to work in Trustee Department. Thanks for the story and pictures Dorothy. |
