Birtley Community Centre is a registered Charitable Voluntary Organisation. Housed in former Miners Welfare Hall in close proximity to main street of Birtley.
The Centre was put into Trust by the Miners Welfare Union in the 1960's to benefit and serve local people and those from surrounding areas.
From 1986 the Centre has received grant aid from Gateshead Metroplitan Borough Council's Community Education Service for 60% of the day to day running costs. Supported by Full Time Community Education Worker and six part time staff.
The Centre caters for all age ranges from babies within the Parent and Toddler group to 80 plus within our Senior Sequence Dance Sections.
The Centre has a varied programme of activities ranging from self supporting groups such as Model Railway Society, Lapidary Society, Canine Society to Community Groups such as Youth Groups for ages 5 to 19 years of age, Womens Group and Out of School Care group which provides all year round Care for School age Children, approved by O.F.S.T.E.D
The Comunity Education service also provide Adult Education Classes. This terms courses include Watercolours, Practical Crafts and Flower arranging for beginners. We also host Computer Classes facilitated by Learning World from beginners to IBT2 level.
More recently the Centre has become a UK Online Centre where people can access the World Wide Web and set up E mail accounts free of charge supported by Tutors from Gateshead College whom can offer a variety of training courses either on an individual or group basis.
