Children and health

In 1999 a government report stated there were possible health effects for children living within 1 kilometer of opencast sites. There are no doubt a number of children living within 1 kilometre of this site. In addition, Bowburn Schools (both Infant and Junior) are well within this distance. Indeed the playground of the Infants school overlooks the first part of the site to be opencasted. Dust from the site can easily be blown onto the playground. North East Opencast Action Group
