Dorman Memorial Museum

The Dorman Memorial Museum was opened on the 1st of July 1904, by the Colonel in Chief of the Yorkshire Regiment.. It was presented to Middlesbrough by Sir Arthur Dorman
Arthur Dorman was one half of the partnership Dorman Long which became the main iron and steel producers of Teesside. The company was established on Teesside in 1875 when Arthur Dorman and Albert de Lande Long leased furnaces from the West Marsh Iron Company. Thenceforth through ‘takeovers’ and amalgamations it became the main iron and steel company of Teesside.

Sir Arthur presented the museum to the town as a memorial to his son George Lockwood Dorman, and other soldiers of the Prince of Wales Own Yorkshire Regiment who lost their lives during the South African (Boer)wars of 1899-1902. George had died of enteric fever. (Of the 20000 British Empire deaths about 13500 were from disease). There is a monument to all the Middlesbrough men lost in those wars just inside Albert Park

The Ideal Location

The location of the Dorman Museum next to Albert Park was ideal because a visit to one often entailed a visit to the other. As kids we were always fascinated by the Lion and Zebra which you saw as you entered the museum. This particular display seems to have a hold on the memory of most Middlesbroughians. In any nostalgic conversation of Middlesbrough past..the question is sure to be asked “Do you remember that lion eating the zebra?”. For a time this display disappeared to the distress of many.

The Lion Returns!

And here he is on display in a bigger, more wide ranging museum. The museum started as a natural history museum. Now, in addition there are collections of cultural objects including Linthorpe Pottery. There is a strong emphasis on the story of the town and its people. It is a strange feeling seeing what were commonplace objects in my childhood , especially toys, which are now on display as historical artefacts!

Admission to the museum is free and it opens every day but Monday from 10.00 a.m - 5.30 p.m.
