Archibald Schools

Archibald schools, on Ayresome Green Lane were opened in 1913. The building cost £16,000.
Originally it had all three departments, infant, junior and senior. In 1938 the senior department of Newport School was closed and from then pupils also transferred from there to Archibald at the age of twelve. For several decades it was one of the biggest schools in Middlesbrough. Now it is a Primary School.

Memories

Denise Sullivan (MacDonald)
I started Archibald Infant school in 1942 when I was 5. Miss Venables was Headmistress.
We went into Junior school when we were about 7 with Miss Best as Headmistress. She seemed very strict and we had to be on our best behaviour. Miss Bosomworth taught us in Standard 3 and 4, she was well liked as she was always fair.
At age 11 we went into Senior Girls when Newport Juniors joined us. We were then separated from the boys with a door between the two playgrounds. Miss Leng was our Headmistress,I thought she was lovely, very fair. She lived in a big house on the corner of West Lane and Stockton Rd. She lived well into her 90's.

-----------------------------
Miss Routledge and Miss Wedgewood (Seniors) were well liked, they made us feel comfortable and on their level. (SYLVIA HATFIELD)

Miss Wedgewood taught Scottish dancing, really enjoyable. Miss Leng, Headmistress, kept discipline but also well liked, she held position in the Guide movement.Miss Routledge was very popular.Miss Elcoat taught needlework. They were all Senior Teachers. Miss Bosomworth, Juniors, was an excellent teacher, kept discipline well but very popular, the type of teacher who made lessons interesting. ( MARGARET WOOD.)

Domestic Science at Ayresome School

We had to walk to Ayresome Senior School at the top of bold on]Parliament Rd to do Domestic Science. The 1944 Education Act created Secondary Modern Schools which had to provide proper Domestic Science lessons for girls and Craft and Woodwork for boys. So they built these special blocks in Ayresome School.
