Intriguing Inscription

On one of the gravestones in Linthorpe Cemetery is the inscription.

Far,far away from his
home o'er the billow
No one to visit his
bedside to weep.
Yet he will rest on his
still lowly pillow
Peacefully, sweetfully
the last dreamless sleep

The home, far away o'er the billow, is, in fact, Canada. This is the grave of one Moses Carpenter. At least this was his Anglicized name. His other name name was Ska-Run-Ya-Ta and he was a Native American of the Mohawk Tribe

Medicine Show

So in what circumstances did a Mohawk Indian die in Middlesbrough? Moses was a member of an entourage of a traveling faith-healer. The leader of the group was Sequah , also a Native American who claimed to be a 'medicine man' with special healing powers.

Apparently in Middlesbrough people flocked to the 'medicine show' to avail themselves of the cures and Sequah and his companions were very popular figures in the town.

Sadly, Moses contracted pneumonia and was admitted to the North Riding Infirmary. However neither the conventional doctors
nor any of his party were able to affect any cure and Moses died on the 16th of August 1889 aged 35.

Such was the popularity of Sequah and his group that there was a huge turn-out of townsfolk at the funeral.

Video on YouTube

In 2009 Joseph Tan of GoreCARTOONS made a short film in Linthorpe Cemetery searching for the gravestone.

Apparently there is some talk about the body being returned to the Mohawk Tribe in Canada. Joseph Tan discusses this expressing the view that Moses is now so much a part of Middlesbrough that he should remain.

There is no doubt in my mind that Joseph Tan has made this video because of total respect and honour for Moses. It is sad, therefore, to read comments on the video from a Native American accusing Mr Tan of being racist simply because he uses the term 'Indian'.
