The Hardware Shop

I was born on Princess Road in 1962. I had a happy childhood, growing up on Craven Street and Parliament Road where my parents had their own glass & hardware shop on the corner - "L.R. Jones", 86 Parliament Road!! Anyone remember it?? It was a double fronted shop, painted bright yellow - mam always made it look so inviting with her great window displays. Outside they would have a line of galvanised dustbins, stepladders and various hardware etc which they would trail in and out every morning and evening. Dad was a plumber and glazier by trade and proud of it. He was very good at it as well. They both worked hard for years on that business and put everything into it, including blood, sweat and tears!!!

Auntie Nellie's Doorstep

I spent most of my time on Craven Street. On the opposite corner to our shop was Lowes Newsagents. My sister and her family lived round the corner from our shop at no.2 and at no. 20 there was a very special family that we were very close to and were very good friends with. Their front door was always open, everyone was always made welcome and I have very fond memories of "Auntie Nellie" sitting on the doorstep with a fag in her hand watching the world go by and watching over us kids (I was good friends with their two girls) while we dug around in the cobbles with lollysticks!! Either that or we would be having a jumble sale on her doorstep with stuff we had taken from her house!!! She didn't mind. Auntie Nellie was the best and I felt as safe as houses!

What has happened to the area now?

Mam and Dad retired in 1988 and whilst Dad thrived in his retirement, I know for a fact Mam missed Parliament Road and all her friends badly (we lived up Acklam and I think mam felt a bit isolated). Two years ago my dear Dad died - at that time I took the car and went for a drive down memory lane. I live in the south and even though I get up to Middlesbrough often I had not been down Parliament Road for years. I got such a shock. It was so sad, so depressing seeing that area now - what has happened?? It looks so run down.

What I can say is that when Dad turned 80, he got into computers big time!!! And, I know for a fact, he would have loved this site and would have been offering his twopenneth!!! So, with that in mind, and without getting too maudlin , I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone involved in this site for helping to keep those precious memories alive!!!!

Julie
