Air Raids on Middlesbrough

There were several German air raids on Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough's near neighbour South Bank holds the dubious honour of being the first civilian target to be bombed in the Second World War.(25 May 1940)

I only detail one of the raids on this site and that is the one over the Newport area of the town (15/16 April 1942) because it seems to have been overlooked by all the major local historians.

Aviation historian Bill Norman does detail this raid and all the others in his highly readable books. I chose the title of this page as a direct steal from the title of his book "Luftwaffe Over the North" published in 1993 (Leo Cooper ISBN 0 85052 233 1).

I strongly recommend Mr Norman's books if you are interested in this chapter of Middlesbrough's history. Bill Norman has the great gift of being able to present his meticulous research in a readable way combining the historical records with the human stories of those who experienced the raids.

Air Raid Diary

Look out particularly for his next publication Air Raid Diary.
It gives accounts of all known raids on the wider Teesside area from Hartlepool to Whitby, as well casualty lists for each incident. It is to be published in the early part of 2010.
