Albert Mews to Pallister Park

I have lots of memories from Middlesbrough even though I moved away with my family to Scotland in 1954. I was born in Albert Mews (opposite Middlesbrough Town Hall)in 1943. I attended St. Johns Primary School until whole street moved out to Pallister Park (Albert Mews was demolished and became a car park). I then attended Brambles Farm Primary School. My father, also born in Middlesbrough, worked at Dorman Long.

My Mixed Ancestry

Three of my grandparents were of Welsh descent and my paternal great grandfather, John Jones, apparently started the Apollo Choir after a colleague died in an accident at work. If anyone has any further information regarding this connection with the choir I would be interested to know.

Victim of War

Middlesbrough does seem to have attracted a lot of Irish, Welsh and others from further afield due to the steel industry.
My paternal grandfather was from a part of Prussia which is now in Poland but was originally in Germany. At the onset of the First World War he was interned on the Isle of Man and then forcibly returned to Germany at the end of hostilities.

Midllesbrough's First Motor byke Side car

My German grandfather's name was Preikschat but after he was repatriated the family adopted the name of Pritchard. He was the first person in Middlesbrough to own a motorcycle with a sidecar (made of wicker!)
