PRESS RELEASE

BROMPTON CELEBRATES GENERATIONS OF LINEN WORKERS

On Sunday 17th July at 2 p.m. on Water End Green, Brompton, near Northallerton, the Brompton Heritage Group, friends and helpers will meet for the official unveiling of their memorial to the linen workers of past centuries who wove linen in their own homes and sheds and later on in the Wilford and Yeoman/Pattison mills in the village.

The memorial is an octagonal seat based on the shape and width of the old Wilford Mill Chimney and is built with bricks rescued when it was demolished in 2003. In the centre of the seat is a large block of sandstone into which has been carved the inscription “In memory of generations of Brompton Linen Workers. Erected by the B.H.G. 2011’

Funding of £9650 has been granted towards the cost of this memorial by the Big Lottery Fund, which agreed with the Brompton Heritage Group that such an important part of the village’s past, about which many people are unaware, should be celebrated. Mill owners have their own memorial in the parish church and the large houses they built from the profits of the industry, but the mill workers had none – until now.

The official unveiling of the seat will be performed by Mrs Vera Brittain, who worked in the Yeoman/Pattison Mill after her return from service with the WAAF during the Second World War. Photographs recording the building of the memorial and scenes of Brompton in the past will be on view and all who are interested in this event will be most welcome to attend to help to make it a memorable occasion.

PHOTOS FOUND IN NORTHALLERTON HIGH STREET JAN 2009
The following is taken from the Friday 16 January 2009 Darlington & Stockton Times (D&S) and repeated here in case they may belong to one of our "readers"?:-

Help is need to trace the owner of four old photographs found dropped in Northallerton.
The small black and white photos were found outside the Skipton Building Society in the High Street. They show family scenes and they date from the early years of the 20th century up to about 1940.
They were handed to the building society's staff by a customer who found them on the pavement.
Anyone who can help trace the owner should contact the building society on 01609 774732

Message Board.
I understand that there are problems registering and using the message board.
I know it was a long and complicated procedure to do so and this is probably why it was not used very much however it has worked in the past. Today it has now been pointed out to me that it is not working at all and readers are unable to register (I also tried it and failed miserably).
For this reason, the message Board has been "re-booted".
Please email me if you have any experience of difficulties with approximate dates if known in particular whether it was before or after the recent outage. Also please feel free to make an entry on the message board and see if it works for you????

The Wilford Family was one of the 2 main Linen Manufacturers and are deeply involved in the history and heritage of Brompton. For anyone who is interested, and there are many descendents/relatives of the Wilford family in and around Brompton, both now and in the past, a direct descendent of the family has spent many years (and no doubt many Euros) researching the family history and has now produced a book.
Mary Wilford's message on the message board is repeated below with contact details for interested readers. Thanks Mary - a tremendous task finally comes to fruition. Well done.

Wilford Family History

After several years of research and contacting cousins around the world, I have finally completed a family book . ?Wilford Family History? is about the descendants of HENRY WILFORD, born estimated 1605 in Northallerton Yorkshire .UK. The book also has information on the presumed ancestors of Henry Wilford.
In addition to the dates and places of birth, marriage, and death which are usually presented in a family genealogy book, the book has about 400 scanned photos and has over 330 pages.
For any of you who are interested, please E-mail me at the address below.
