About Brotton.......

Brotton is a village in North Yorkshire, It is in the Parish of Skelton & Brotton.

The manor of Brotton was owned by Robert De Brus, Lord of Skelton. It was granted to him by William the Conqueror

Brotton is listed in the Domesday Book and has the medieval name of Broctune, which means "town on the brow of a hill".

The hill it refers to is Warsett Hill situated at the top of Huntcliff. It was the site of a Roman signal station built to defend against Anglo Saxon invasion. Evidence of this still remains at Huntcliff.
