Northern Echo 27th June 1908
A large crowd assembled in the vicinity of Messrs Bell Bros Lumpsey mines at Brotton in Cleveland on Thursday to witness the felling of a large brick chimney no longer required for the works. The chimney was built 28 years ago, when the mine was started, and was 110 feet high and 14ft 7in in diameter at the base and square in construction.
In about 11 minutes after the fire being lighted at the base, the top of the stack began to lean over, and a moment later the whole mass fell with a tremendous roar, mixed with the shouts of the crowd.
