Oh! how could you

I am daily shocked at human beings. I am 62 years old and as a child I was brought up to respect animals. A good start in life I think! That is why I am shocked when I take in a Bunny as sad as "CHARLOTTE". A phone call from a local vet asking me if I had space for a bunny with no home, found me travelling to their surgery and picking up what I recognised as a Silver Fox. She should be a big girl, but she is so painfully thin with lots of scars. Her back right leg is almost useless, after it was broken and not properly treated. How, I asked, did she come to be here, this poor soul. I am told she was seen being thrown out of a moving car, it seems unbelievable she is still alive. Charlotte is living in our dining room, at the moment, in an indoor cage and is eating for England. She runs around the house with great difficulty, but her most endearing quality is she loves human beings. When she sees me, she follows my feet. Why do I love animals? Well Charlotte answers the question. What human would love another human after all she has been put through? They go through hell, but still think you are angels. Remember a rabbit is for life not just for Easter.

Charlottes Diary

We intend to keep a weekly diary of how Charlotte progresses through to her eventually finding a new home.

Week 1

Gwen received a phone call from Wittricks Veterinary Practice in Northalleron, to say that they had a rabbit taken in after being thrown out of a moving car. After visiting the RSPCA centre at Great Ayton, Gwen stopped at the practice to collect the rabbit. On arrival at the vets Gwen realised that the rabbit was an emaciated Silver Fox female, who was around 6-8 months old.

Back at Bunny Burrows Gwen thoroughly health checked the rabbit, by which point she had named Charlotte, for any abnormalities. Gwen found that Charlotte had a swelling on the hock of her back right leg; her bottom jaw was also mis-aligned, meaning that her teeth were unable to wear against each other and teeth problems had developed as a result.

As well as these problems, Charlotte was extremely under weight - half her ideal body weight. Her bones could be felt under her fur, she had very little muscle and was covered in scabs. She also wasn't as mobile as other rabbits due to a suspected leg fracture which resulted in her being unable to move her right leg and she also dragged her leg behind her.

On April 10th, Charlotte was taken for a full veterinary examination and a VHD vaccination by Frances Harcourt-Brown based in Harrogate. There, Charlotte under went a full health check and the vet discovered that the suspected leg fracture was infact an abscess between her leg and heel joint (metatarsal joint).

Frances told Gwen that she was going to put Charlotte under anaesthetic and take a closer look at the leg and if she had an abscess there, rather than a joint, she would have no choice but to amputate the limb. As well as this, Charlotte would also need to have her front (incisor) teeth removed and be spayed. But, before being able to do this she would have to gain some weight to support her through the anaesthic.

Week 2

This week has been quite an eventful one for charlotte. Gwen was contacted by The Northern Echo, a local newspaper, who asked if they could run an article on Charlotte for their animal watch section. Gwen agreed and they visited 'Bunny Burrows', interviewed Gwen and took photographs of them both. Then, on April 12th, a large article featured in the paper, highlighting everything that had happened so far in Charlotte's life.

Also this week, we all saw a big improvement in Charlotte, she enjoyed long periods of time hopping around the garden, looking at the other rescue rabbits and following us around while we were mucking out the bunnies. On April 13th, Charlotte began to climb the garden steps to get up to the top level of the garden and into the top building to look at the rescue rabbits.

Then, on Sunday April 15th, Charlotte featured in a Bunny Burrows display in the Richmond market hall, where she proved a great attraction with many people enquiring about the plucky rabbit. That night, Charlotte recovered from her day with a hug from Gwen in bed.

Week 3

Three weeks after arriving at Bunny Burrows, Charlotte's confidence has continued to grow. Gwen was pleased to weigh her this week to discover that she had gained enough weight to support her through an anaesthetic.

So, on Tuesday April 24th, Gwen set off early in the morning to take Charlotte to a vet in Harrogate, 50 miles from her home in Richmond. Whilst Charlotte was there, she was given a thorough examination by the vet. She also under went X-rays to try to discover the reason for her badly formed hock joint.

It was first thought that Charlotte would have to have the entire limb removed if it couldn't be treated to remove any discomfort she may be feeling from it. But the X-ray showed that there was an abscess in the joint, which was why the joint was swollen and the reason why Charlotte was unable to use it. The vet decided to operate that day to drain the abscess and insert some slow release antibiotic beads, to treat the infected hock.

Also, while Charlotte was under anaesthetic her front incisor teeth were removed, because they were badly damaged during the impact after being thrown from the moving car. This is quite a common procedure to carry out in rabbits, since it avoids on-going veterinary treatment and unnecessary suffering for the rabbit. Charlotte came round well from her operation, but she had to remain in the kennels over night for observation. There she received plenty of cuddles from the veterinary nurse on duty.

The next day on Wednesday April 25th, Gwen went back to Harrogate to collect the brave little bunny. Once back home she had no hesitations about eating her usual dried rabbit food and greenery. She also had no problems hoping around her cage and standing up on her back feet to see what was going on around her. Also that day, a local northern newspaper visited Bunny Burrows to do a story on Charlotte's progress.

By Saturday Charlotte was able to hop around the garden and follow Gwen around during 'mucking out'. She also enjoyed looking at the rescue rabbits, particularly the castrated males !!!!

Week 4

Everone at Bunny Burrows is amazed at Charlotte's progress over the last couple of weeks. She has changed from a shy, 8 month old bunny to an outgoing young lady, and all this in 4 weeks !! She has shown courage during her leg and teeth operations and surprisingly has loads of trust in humans.

Gwen felt that she was strong enough this week to meet her other rabbits, Charlie, an angora x and Sandeman, a dwarf lop, who live together in one of Gwen's spare rooms. Despite being different breeds and ages they all have one thing in common - neither of them have front incisor teeth due to teeth problems.

They were introduced at the beginning of the week in the back garden, Charlotte was a little confused with her new found friends - she tried to mount Charlie and chased Sandeman, thumping her feet as she went. This reaction was probably due to a combination of never seeing another rabbit before and being unspayed. But, by the end of the week Charlotte was happily playing in the garden alongside them, although she was a bit wary of Sandeman.

Week 5

This week Charlotte has continued to bob about in the garden with her new friends, Charlie and Sanderman, she rather enjoys the odd game of chase with both of them. Charlotte also went to the vets for a check-up at Harrogate. There, she had a brief stay overnight and had her stitches removed from her hock joint. The vet was very impressed with her recovery and progress. She also praised Charlotte after hearing that she had developed a good appetite, despite having her front incisor teeth removed.

During the week, Charlotte had enjoyed long periods of time running around the garden, with Charlie and Sanderman. She has also claimed the top part of the garden as her own and likes to sit observing all the 'goings on' at the 'Burrows'.

Week 6

This week Charlotte has become somewhat of a little adventurer. She has developed a taste for extreme sports (bunny style). If jumping out of a 3-foot run isn't enough, wait till you hear what else she has been up to.

Rock climbing
After watching Sanderman jump up a wall, Charlotte decided to try it out herself but failed miserably. After sitting for a little while, weighing up how high she would have to propel herself up onto the wall and onto the path above, she decided instead to have a little scramble, before slipping onto the grass below.

Absailing (Sort of)
Again after observing her coach Sanderman, she decided to use the steps to get on top of the wall. But, rather than using the steps to get back down onto the lawn below, she peered over the top, shuffling her body towards the edge. First one paw went over, gripping the edge, then another, then Gwen caught her and shouted that it wasn't a good idea to her. So, that was the end of that idea.

Run running
In a bunny's eyes this is an extreme sport ! After not suceeding on her last two events, Charlotte decided to try her paw at running across the narrow strip of wood on top of the folding runs.

She first hopped up a couple of steps leading to the very top of the garden, then turned to look at what she had to get across before hopping onto the top of the folding runs. All of this before finally walking along and inspecting all of the rescue rabbits below her...all of which were watching in disbelief.

Week 7

Since little Charlotte has progressed so well and gained sufficient weight, Frances the vet felt that she was strong enough to be spayed.

By spaying Charlotte, it would not only prevent her from becoming pregnant but would also prevent her from developing cancer of the uterus. This type of cancer is extremely common in middle aged and older rabbits. It usually causes loss of condition and weight-loss. If it isn't caught soon enough it may spread to other organs of the body, such as the lungs, which leaves the rabbit with severe breathing difficulties. When the cancer affects a rabbit to this degree, it soon results in death.

The operation didn't seem to affect Charlotte and she carried on her life as normal - following us around the garden and digging in the plant pots - earning herself the nickname of 'Compost Annie'.

Week 8

Charlotte has been on her first holiday with Gwen and John to Colchester, 251 miles...WOW...that's certainly along way to hop ! She sat on Gwen's knee all the way there. She took her own bedroom with her in the form of a puppy pen, so it was definitely 'Home from Home' for Charlotte. When asked if she had sent any postcards, she replied..."Yes...I STAMPED them all myself !"

On the return journey she got stuck in a traffic jam - it was so hot all the car windows were down. At one stage she was alongside a big truck and when she looked up a truck driver was waving at her. Of course Charlotte responded with an impish twitch of her nose. The truck driver used his CB radio to inform the other truckers up ahead that a rabbit was heading their way. As John drove up the outside lane all the truck drivers shouted and waved to Charlotte.

When she got home she went into the garden to tell the other bunnies and guinea pigs all about her holiday. They all listened eagerly to her tales, except Babycham and Buchaneer who chased her away !

Week 9

As it was National Volunteers week, Gwen took Charlotte to sit on her stall in the Richmond Market hall. As usual, she greeted all the visitors with her appealing eyes.

Charlotte is now up to her ideal weight and is also using her back leg that was going to be amputated. She has recently moved from her 'bungalow' into a 'smart apartment block' in Gwen and John's dining room. On the ground floor she can visit Cherry and Huckleberry and on the first floor, call in to see Babycham and Buchaneer (If they don't chase her away !). Charlotte lives at the top of the block, in the penthouse suite...John says, "That's what she deserves."

Week 10

The FOR SALE sign was outside Charlotte's penthouse, so soon after moving in. She said she missed having her own front door onto the carpet. So, Buchaneer and Babycham decided they would like the penthouse suite and Cherry and Huckleberry thought they would move to the 1st floor. Check in next week to hear about their moving experience !

She was all set to go to a garden fete this week...straw hat, with two special cut-outs for her ears and a small picnic hamper filled with Burgess Supa Rabbit, Deluxe Mix...then the rain came. Well, house bunnies aren't too keen on rain and Charlotte said it might make her straw hat go all mushy looking, so, she decided to stay at home and spend a quiet afternoon (if there is a quiet afternoon in Bunny Burrows) hopping around the house. Then, when nightime came, she went, as usual, to bed with Gwen for an hour. Gwen says it's GIRL TALK time...she likes to RABBIT on.

Week 11

It was ever so early one morning this week when Gwen and John took on the role of 'Bunny Movers'. They packed up all the fixtures and fittings belonging to Charlotte, Cherry, Huckleberry, Babycham and Buchaneer, placed them carefully in a litter tray (empty of course) and re-arranged them all in their new homes. Charlotte has settled in nicely, her front door is always open and she hops happily around the living room. Cherry and Huckleberry are extremely pleased as they have moved into a larger apartment on the top floor with Buchaneer and Babycham down below.

Charlotte was most concerned this week as she watched Gwen put one of her guinea pigs into a pet carrier to take it to the vets. The guinea pig had a large abscess. The vet filled it with New Zealand honey, as this absorbs the moisture . When 'piggie' arrived home, Charlotte was most impressed that he had been treat with a 'natural product'. She said, "I like anything from nature...cabbage, cauliflower leaves, carrots...

Week 12

June 21st - June 27th

The fact that Charlotte knows she is in a safe and loving home, where she will never want for anything, doesn’t stop her realising that Bunny Burrows is far from quiet and peaceful. This week, while relaxing in her bed in her ground floor apartment, an unexpected event took place.

Yes, Charlotte begins to explain. I was lying there minding my own business and in hops an intruder, quite uninvited, by the name of Cherry. She very rudely booted me out of my bed. Well, I was not a happy bunny and believe me, I told her so in no uncertain terms.

With my rest and peace disturbed, I decided to go and look around the garden. Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any worse, out jumps Sandeman and Charlieman from nowhere. I got such a fright, I leapt into the air and landed in a bucket of Zoflora disinfectant! I smelt quite nice but felt very wet! I could have thought of nicer ways to cool off in the hot weather, like finding a nice piece of fruit or veg. I guess I’ll just have to be more alert as regards these mischievous bunnies and make sure they are on the receiving end next time.

Week 13

June 28th - July 4th

Charlotte hasn't taken very kindly to the hot weather over this last week. She's just ate and slept and lazed about in her apartment. Talking about her apartment...She thought it would be really nice if you could all see where she lives...SO...Here it is !

Since Charlotte decided she wanted to move to the ground floor, Huckleberry and Cherry now live on the top floor and Buchaneer and Babycham live below.

Week 14

Charlotte hasn't done too much this week as she has been thinking about Amanda Thomas's tandem free-fall parachute jump on Sunday July 15th. She says that she is so pleased that she's not jumping as she thinks that her ears might get caught up in the wind and she may never land ! She did add, that she may consider doing a BUN-gee jump one day !

Oh dear, it happened again, Charlotte was going to a fete last Saturday and it rained...that's the second time ! She wasn't very pleased when Gwen told her, she hopped back to her house muttering...I must be fated !

It seems Charlotte is so popular that she is double booked. Armstrong Richardson in Richmond are staging a promotion for BURGESS pet foods at their PET DAY on July 21st and she has been asked along. Burgess are giving away loads of 'freebies' and Charlotte would really like some of those. But, there's an old folks home in Northallerton who are also expecting to see her and she'd really like to hop along there as well, as she likes to make the old people smile...Where will she go ?

Week 15

July 12th - July 18th

Charlotte has been so excited this week as Gwen is hand rearing two baby bunnies. We think they were born on Wednesday July 11th, this photo was taken on July 19th. They are so small that they both fit into one of Gwen's hands. They are being fed regularly on goat's milk and kept warm by lying on a heat pad in their house. Charlotte couldn't believe that she was ever that small and she was even more amazed when Gwen told her they were called kittens.

Even more excitement as John asked Charlotte to help plan a surprise birthday party for Gwen. Charlotte had never been to a Bunny Burrows party before but she had certainly heard about them. She didn't know if she would be able to keep a secret for a whole week.....what if Gwen offered her extra cauliflower leaves to reveal all ?

Check in next week to find out !

Week 16

July 19th - July 25th

Gosh...What a busy week Charlotte has had. She actually managed to keep the secret about Gwen's surprise birthday party on Thursday July 19th.

...and then

On Saturday July 21st she got up and had to get ready to go to Armstrong Richardson's pet day in Richmond. She met lots of people and even managed to get her paws on some of the freebies, although she wasn't quite sure what to do with her sample bags of guinea pig food. We suggested she gave them to Princess and her son Prince, two adorable long haired guinea pigs who live at Bunny Burrows. Charlotte thought that was a great idea and hopped out into the garden to tell them.

...not over yet

A car was sent along to pick Charlotte up in Richmond and take her to the old folks home in Northallerton. She had a great time there, it brought a smile to the old folks' faces as she was allowed to hop freely all around the grounds. This was a pleasant end to an exhausting day.

Week 17

July 26th - Aug 1st

Charlotte says have you seen the babies in week 15?

Sadly since that photograph was taken, the brown coloured baby died. During that hot spell of weather last week, both of them stopped breathing and Gwen had to resuscitate them. This photo was taken on July 29th.

Poor Charlotte hasn't had a good week either, she has had to visit Frances, the vet in Harrogate. Gwen thought she may have been having pain in her back leg again and having trouble moving it as she was weeing down this leg and Gwen thought this was causing urine scald. Charlotte had to stay overnight and of course, this caused some heartache for Gwen.

After some x-rays, it was found that Charlotte's leg was fine. So Frances is doing some blood tests, she will be looking for e. cuniculi, a parasite in the brain, which is quite common with rabbits, or a parasite that may be attacking her kidneys.

We'll keep you posted.

Week 18

Charlotte went with Gwen last Saturday to Catterick Village Hall Charity Craft Fair. She sat on Gwen's knee and was quite happy to meet all the people passing by.

She hasn't had the results of her blood tests back yet but she has been coming out of her house more and hopping around the living room. During one of her times out, the baby was on the floor, Charlotte hopped over to investigate and gave the baby a gentle nudge with her nose...Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship ?

Talking about friendships...One of Bunny Burrows long term residents has had his eye on Charlotte ! His name is Derek, Dirk to his friends. He was hopping happily around the garden when he spotted Charlotte from a distance...LOVE !!! He leapt across to introduce himself, Charlotte just looked and hopped away. Oh dear ! Derek wasn't expecting to be shunned, he's such a cutie as you can tell.

Hi, I'm Derek. I felt so rejected when Charlotte wouldn't talk to me, she's such a gorgeous girl. Never mind, on the way back to my house I bumped into an old friend and we had a riveting conversation !

Week 19

Is there a week at Bunny Burrows that isn't busy...NO!!!

Charlotte has lost count of how many times she has answered the door bell. Last Saturday, a cute little guinea pig called for some general health advice and a big bunny hopped along asking for tips on keeping his bottom clean. Lots of people came to rehome bunnies and guinea pigs and some people called with their bunnies who were coming to stay for their holidays. Then ten homeless guinea pigs arrived, so Charlotte helped book them in and showed them all to their rooms.

On Sunday, Charlotte went to Richmond Market Hall and sat on John's knee at the door. Lots of folk stopped to chat with her, she loved that as she is such a sociable little soul...well, not so little these days !

Whilst wandering around the house, Charlotte got her eye on a box of paper and as the box had no lid she was able to see what was inside...it was the Bunny Burrows Summer Newsletter. She was very surprised as to why she hadn't had a copy delivered so she thought she would help herself to one. When she got back home she propped the newsletter up in the corner and settled down with a nice dish of Burgess, already for a good read.

Well...she didn't get past the first page before she had to go and tell the others about Boogie for the Bunnies at Huworth Grange on Saturday September 1st at 7.30pm. It's an evening of entertainment for all ages. There's live music, bingo, pie n pea supper and a bar. Everyone sounded so excited and they all began to wonder if they would be invited.

Week 20

Charlotte was so pleased she hadn't thrown out her old umbrella when she moved house, as she certainly needed it this week. It was one of those freak Summer storms and John said he'd never seen anything like it. Charlotte said it was so heavy she couldn't see out of the window, it was like a wall of water descending from the sky. She gave a thought for all the wild bunnies and hoped they were all tucked up warm and dry in their burrows.

On Friday August 17th, seven, 11 day old black and white Dutch baby bunnies arrived as their mother had died. They are all being hand fed on full cream goat's milk and Kylie has the job of making them go to the toilet afterwards !!!
They don't mind being handled, one of them even likes to sit on your shoulder.

Which one is this...they all look the same!!!

The other baby, who is still nameless, is now eating junior rabbit food and enjoying an outing in Gwen's pocket. He, or she, is an adorable little bunny that loves human contact.

And finally...Derek has spent today, Wednesday, at his foster parents, hopping around the garden and having lots of hugs. He always enjoys this and returns home with a 'red-cross' parcel every time.

Week 21

All this week has been full of excitement for Charlotte as Gwen has told her she can come to the Boogie for the Bunnies Dance on Saturday September 1st. She has been told she can take a partner but unfortunately her best friend, the baby who didn't have a name...but is now called Harley, is under age.

Charlotte is pretending she hasn't chosen anyone yet but just between ourselves we think she has Derek in mind. We know she plays hard to get but secretly has a soft spot for him. Rumour has it, Derek is one of the best dancers at Bunny Burrows, so Charlotte won't get her paws hopped on to much. She says her favourite song is...You're the bun that I want...Ooo oo oo!

We are all amazed at the progress of the seven black and white dutch babies. They are very lively and are lapping milk themselves. They have been constantly watched over by Jade, one of Gwen and John's adorable dogs who thinks she is their mother.

Spot, their older dog, looks on with his loveable eyes, totally relaxed on his doggie bed wondering what all the fuss is about.

Week 22

Well, as suspected last week, it was Derek who Charlotte chose to go with her to Boogie for the Bunnies at Hurworth Grange and they haven't stopped talking about it since. Charlotte and Derek were rather naughty as they smuggled baby Harley with them but when he was spotted it was too late as they were already there. Gwen told Harley to stay well away from the bar as he/she was under-age.

The three bunnies were so amazed as they'd never seen so many people and Derek did comment afterwards that he was so pleased he had lop-ears as people never stopped talking! They were all amused when Gwen entered dressed as a bunny and agreed for a human she did look very convincing. They were surprised she came home with her tail in tact, considering how many folk tugged at it.

A good night was had by all and Charlotte, Derek and Harley hoped it wouldn't be too long before some other social event was planned.

The Hurworth Hare

Music from the 60's to the 90's was played by the Time Machine

Please note that none of the bunnies were subject to any stressful situations during the evening, they were kept well away from the hall while the band was performing. All the bunnies involved in any social events are carefully chosen by Gwen with the knowledge they will be happy and unaffected by these occasions.

Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

Week 23

Unfortunately having a pet has its very sad moments, as yesterday (Tuesday) Spot the dog went to pet heaven. Spot was a rescue dog and Gwen and John reckoned he was about 14 years old and most of those years he spent with them. He was such a happy little dog and always pleased to see people right up to the end. He will be a great miss at Bunny Burrows.

Goodbye Spot...

Charlotte is becoming very cheeky and has started eating Gwen's indoor plants. Her confidence continues to grow and she gets into more mischief by the day. Of course, she knows she is the apple of Gwens eye, so her cheek has no limit.

On Monday, Charlotte spent her morning listening to Radio Cleveland. There was a voice she thought she knew...Yes, it was Gwen! Charlotte pricked up her big ears and with great interest listened for the next 15 minutes as Gwen talked about bunnies. She remarked to some of the other residents that Gwen must be very well known to be asked to talk on the radio. They just laughed and said she'd been on the radio before but not only that, she'd been on TV many times too. Charlotte was amazed, so it wasn't too surprising when Gwen told her she'd won a competition at Sainsbury's. A kind lady had nominated her for all the hard work she does for the bunnies and she had won the Local Hero Competition...WELL DONE GWEN!

Week 24

Well, as usual, there was lots of activity at Bunny Burrows this week. Charlotte had another social event to attend, only this time, it was at home. A surprise leaving party had been arranged for Hayley, Bunny Burrows Work Placement. Hayley is leaving as she is to begin studying animal behaviour at college. There was lots of lovely home-made food thanks to Chris the Bunny Burrows Baker, lots of cards, presents, laughter and of course, a few tears as Hayley will be a big miss around the place but no doubt will back at her earliest opportunity.

Harley, who we have now discovered is a girl, is really doing well. It was only in week 20 that she fitted in Gwen's pocket

The little black and white dutch bunnies are growing so quickly and they all still look the same!

Just when Charlotte thought Gwen's bottle feeding days were over, three wild bunnies, still with their eyes closed, arrived at the Burrows. They are very tiny and it is touch and go with them but lets hope things will turn out fine.

Week 25

This week Charlotte has lost count of the Bunnies, especially babies, that have arrived at the Burrows. She heard Gwen talking about a poor bunny, only 18 months old who had produced 10 litters. She was being used as a breeding machine and her babies were being used for dog meat. Charlotte was horrified.

The beautiful mother was so skinny the vet said he had never seen a rabbit so thin and still be alive, she had no nipples left.

She had three babies with her when she was rescued from the people who were going to drown them in the Beck. Hopefully this story will have a happy ending as the mother is in the best place now and her babies have moved in with the wild babies and are being bottle fed.

That's not all regards the cruelty this week. Five baby bunnies were found dumped in a skip, fortunately they seem to be pretty healthy.

Eight more rabbits were found dumped on Roseberry Topping, mixed sexes, so some of the females are possibly pregnant. Here are three of the adorable girls.

The sad stories are not finished yet. Gwen received another phone call to say two cute little guinea pigs had been dumped outside a pet shop. A male and a possibly pregnant female. It is beyond belief people can do this but unfortunately it does happen and Charlotte is so pleased there is a place like Bunny Burrows for these poor furries to be given a second chance in life.

Week 26

Charlotte could see the postman coming up to the front door..."Oh good," she thought, "I'm expecting some photos from some of my friends who have been fostered out". Nothing came through the letterbox, the doorbell rang instead. "That's odd," she thought, "I'm not expecting a parcel." As Gwen went to answer the door she hopped hurridly behind incase she missed anything.

"Morning Gwen," said the Posty, "Got a parcel for you." By this time Charlotte was standing on her back legs trying to catch a glimpse of what Gwen had a hold of. She was amazed when the parcel was opened, there was loads of cuddly toys, they had been sent on to Bunny Burrows by the Rabbit and Rodent Enthusiasts Club after they had placed an appeal in their newsletter. Charlotte was so pleased as this meant all the bunnies could have a toy each and they could take it with them to their new home when they went.

Charlotte noticed Gwen had an envelope in her hand, the Posty must have given it to her with the parcel. It was the photos from the foster bunnies showing Charlotte what a good time they were having.

Week 27

Despite living in the house, Charlotte has realised that the weather is beginning to get colder, so she has written this rather important article for all bunny owners that keep their furry friends outside.

As you know, us rabbits are extremely hardy animals because we come with a fur coat , so it stands to reason that we are built for cooler temperatures. However, we were not built to be left in an out-door house with only a sheet of the local newspaper to stand on. It would be nice if our house was off the ground and could be placed near a fence or a wall to break the wind. A sloping, overhanging roof would help to keep the rain out. It would be even nicer if a waterproof cover could be put over our house especially during severe storms. As these storms sometimes come during the night, it would be a good idea to put the cover on every night...just in case! You could keep us warm by giving us lots of straw to put on top of our newspaper and please don't forget to fill our water bottle up and keep an eye on it incase it freezes over. Finally, make sure our house is securely locked to prevent dogs and cats from getting in.

After all, you wouldn't leave YOUR front door unlocked...WOULD YOU?

Week 28

Gwen had been invited to give a talk at the National Association for Gifted Children at Cardinal Heenan High School in Leeds. It was their family day so Charlotte, Derek, Prince, Princess, Buchaneer and Babycham went along as well to meet two groups of children aged four to nine. It turned out to be a great day of questions and answers about rabbits and guinea pigs and two of the children sent a drawing especially for Charlotte's Diary.

Some GOOD news and some BAD news now. The bad news is, Derek (Dirk to his friends) one of Bunny Burrows long term residents has decided that it is time he left home. The good news is, he is going to stay permanently with his foster petrents. Every Wednesday, Dirk would hop round to his foster home and spend the day there and return in the evening. Then, last week, Dirk had had enough. When he came in he explained to Gwen that he was always missing the end of a good thriller on the box because he had to come home. It was sad to see him go but so nice because he has gone to such a loving home.

Week 29

Over the last week Charlotte has become increasingly concerned about some unfamiliar noise. She has been hearing some very loud bangs that resemble explosions. She got such a fright the other night, Gwen had to cuddle her up until she calmed down.

"What is it?" asked Charlotte.

Gwen replied, "It's okay, this always happens around this time of the year, they're called fireworks. It is a big English celebration that goes back hundreds of years to 1605 when a man called Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament."

Charlotte thought for a moment then innocently replied, "Oh, so they didn't like MP's in those days either?" Gwen laughed and thought this bunny has been watching too much television.

Gwen went on to explain that the big night was on November 5th and if organised and supervised properly, the fireworks could be very enjoyable. However, they are explosives and in the wrong hands could be extremely dangerous. Unfortunately, children get hold of them, probably unaware of the hidden dangers and play with them like toys.

As Charlotte has found out, this can be very stressful to animals as well as dangerous. This is why she is asking everyone with animals to keep a closer than normal eye on them from now until after November 5th. Where at all possible, any animals living in an outside hutch should be brought into the house. Also, it is important to check before lighting bonfires that no small furry animals, like hedgehogs, have crept inside thinking it was a cosy warm place to nest.

If you do have fireworks, we hope you enjoy them but please, think of the animals and keep them safe.

Week 30

Charlotte was wondering if you had managed to read about her friend Faberge in Bunny Bulletins. Fabby is trying her hardest to loose five pounds in weight and raise some funds for Bunny Burrows at the same time. She is not only missing her food, she has been missing her friend Bucks Fizz. Bucks had to visit the vet after he developed a rattle type noise in his nose. After much investigation and an overnight stay, he is back home with his medication. The vet is doing some tests and we will keep you informed on Bucks progress.

Do you remember the sad story of the poor thin bunny in week 25? Well, she has now put on lots of weight and has been rehomed with a bunny friend called Peter.

Six half-wild baby bunnies, five girls and one boy have arrived at Bunny Burrows. They are being fostered at the moment as they are very nervous. As five of them all look the same it makes it extremely hard to name them. They are all looking for good homes and hopefully, in the next few weeks they will have settled down enough to be rehomed.

Here are three of the girls.

Charlotte would like to mention one last thing this week, it seems for some strange reason alot of people decide to give up their bunnies once the dark nights are upon us. Bunnies are all year round pets not just for Summer months as long as they are given extra bedding and a cover to keep them dry; or better still, brought indoors.

Don't forget to keep a special eye on your pets on Monday November 5th!!!

Week 31

What a busy week at Bunny Burrows!

Charlotte has been so excited to let you know that Bunny Burrows website has won ‘Website of the Month’ award for November. She has managed to get her paws on the photos, one of our webmaster and the other of the Bunny Burrows’ helpers.

Bunny Burrows web master!

Below: The Bunny Burrows 'GANG'

Last Friday, Gwen and John held a slide show at their home. Most of the Burrow gang were there and they enjoyed an entertaining evening with a 'family atmosphere' viewing slides of ‘Old Richmond’. The photos were taken by Gwen’s dad, who is no longer with us but we are sure he would have taken great pleasure at the interest shown in them. Thanks to everyone who provided the food for the buffet and Charlotte says she is trying to find out the least noticeable way of hopping up onto the table to get her share of the tasty treats next time.

Talking of food, poor Fabby, despite all her efforts, didn’t manage to loose any weight this week. We suspect she has been cheating and stealing all Buck’s food as when Gwen opened their door the other morning, Bucks leapt straight into the food container and happily started munching. Better luck next week Fabby!

Finally, Charlotte asked if she could have her photo taken so readers could see how much she has grown.

Week 32

Charlotte, Faberge, Bucks Fizz, Sammy Squirrel (the guinea pig) and Sammy's friend who is also a guinea pig called Louis, Jade (Gwen's dog) Ruby and Gwen all went along to the Rainbow Guides in Staindrop.

Charlotte sat on EVERY childs' knee and thoroughly enjoyed it. Bucks also did the rounds while Fabby, who is still managing to loose a little bit of weight, sat and watched. The Guides had organised an event called 'Bunny Games' and all of the parents had sponsored the children to take part in them. These games consisted of hopping like a bunny and making lettuce from paper. Gwen would like to thank them for their kind donation.

There is great excitement in the air as Charlotte overheard Gwen (she has a habit of listening in) planning a trip out for the Christmas decorations for the Bunny Burrows parties. As usual the garage will be turned into a grotto to add to the festive fun. The Christmas party dates will be in the next newsletter, out soon, so anyone who is not on the mailing list and would like to come to a party should send a stamped addressed envelope to:

68 Whitefields Drive
Richmond
North Yorkshire
DL10 7DL

Look forward to seeing you there.

Week 33

Charlotte, Faberge, Bucks Fizz, Sammy Squirrel and his friend Louis all went to the Mother and Toddler group at the Methodist Hall in Richmond. The children, who were all under the age of five had such a good time cuddling them. It just goes to show that the FURRIES bring so much pleasure to all age groups. A big thank-you for the kind donation.

This week Charlotte had a mission!
A one-time resident of Bunny Burrows, Derek (Dirk to his friends) enlisted the help of Charlotte to send some information to the web-master. He wanted to wish his new petrent Barbara, a happy birthday. Dirk being a gentlemen didn't ask her age but wanted to thank her for all the love and care she gives him. A big bunny-hug to Barbara!

Charlotte has been pestering the life out of Gwen (poor Gwen!) to put the Christmas decorations up for the Bunny Burrow's Christmas parties. Of course, as usual, Charlotte got her own way. The garage has been decked out as a 'Grotto' as well as the conservatory and Charlotte is hoping to find her camera to take some pictures to show you.

If you would like to join in the party fun, here are the dates...

November 30th - 6pm
Dec 8th - 2pm
Dec 15th - 2pm
Dec 22nd - 2pm
Dec 29th - 2pm

Please ring 01748 824788 to reserve your seat!

Week 34

As luck would have it...Charlotte found her camera and managed to take some photos of the Christmas decorations at Bunny Burrows. She was so excited as she had never seen anything like it before, a real dreamy wonderland for everybody to enjoy. Lots of twinkling lights, Carols playing in the background, a chance to win prizes on the Tombola stall and of course, hugga bunny!

It isn't too late to book your seat for one of the parties but be prepared to share it with one of the 23 guinea pigs that arrived today!

Week 35

Things at Bunny Burrows couldn't have been any busier this week says Charlotte. Last Saturday she went to Sinderby Village Hall Christmas Fete and on Sunday she was at Richmond market hall and Gwen was dressed as Santa

Then, on Monday, the Northern Echo arrived at the Burrows, they wanted photos of Gwen and Charlotte in the Christmas Grotto Conservatory. The Northern Echo, who are always a great support to Bunny Burrows also wanted to do a feature on the many guinea pigs that have recently arrived

The Northern Echo returned once more to do a feature on our Fabby's sponsored slim. Here she is with her paw on the scales. This story was featured in the Daily Mail.

Two more photos that Charlotte thought you might like to see are of Gwen dressed as Santa and a recent picture of the half wild girls - who are now loving little bunnies that like to climb on your knee.

Week 36

There is a new edition to the Bunny Burrow Furry Family...He is a lovely little dog called Sammy and he arrived last Friday. He has fitted in so well with everybody...well almost eveyone.

He decided to explore the downstairs of the house and made his way across to the dining room where Charlotte, Buchaneer, Babycham, Cherry and Huckleberry live. As you alreday know, Charlotte lives on the ground floor of this smart apartment block and as it happens she wasn't at home. Sammy, being new to the neighbourhood, decided he would introduce himself and he poked his nose through Charlotte's front door. Charlotte, who was watching his every movement from under the dining room table at the other side of the room, leapt out and demanded to know what he was doing with his head in her house. He didn't have time to answer before she chased him across the dining room, across the living room and half way up the stairs. Poor Sammy couldn't understand what all the fuss was about but decided it was safer sitting half way up the stairs for now.

Gwen rescued poor Sammy as Charlotte grumped back to her house to check everything was still there!

Sammy and Charlotte have resolved their differences and he is now a big fan of hers like all of us.

Week 37

A new resident at Bunny Burrows has caught the eye of our Charlotte. The lucky male is a handsome, adorable lop named Picasso. Unfortunately Picasso has a very disturbing health problem, e-cuniculi. There is no cure for this, only medication to stabilise the condition. It is a parasite that affects the brain. It is very stressful for the bunny and also for its owner to watch. Amongst other things, balance is affected and often the bunny will roll his head or even loose control of his whole body and roll around completely.

It is a fairly unrecognised condition, although very common in pet rabbits, so finding the right vet is important.

She is aware that Picasso isn't well but is happy to take what comes in her stride. When they first met, Charlotte wasn't too sure as he made himself at home in her litter tray! Unfortunately Gwen has had to put Picasso in a basket for now until his balance stabilises and he can learn to right himself. Charlotte makes sure she visits his basket many times during the day.

It's no great surprise to tell you what Charlotte and Picasso want for Christmas, apart from their two front teeth, which neither have. They both hope that Picasso stabilises and they can eventually snuggle up together over the Christmas period and for a very long time afterwards. No mistletoe needed here folks!

This just leaves Charlotte to wish everyone a very peaceful and happy Christmas and thank them all for their support during the last year.

Week 38

Charlotte has been so busy going to parties over Christmas that she hasn't had time to put pen to paper this week. But...she has been taking lots of photographs and wants to share them with you.

Week 39

Charlotte has been sulking this week because all of the parties are over and the decorations have been taken down. But...she has been thinking about a new topic for the website. When all the parties were going on, Charlotte used to sit in the corner of the dining room and enjoy listening to the folk telling each other about the unusual things that their rabbits and guinea pigs get up to. She thought it would be great if others could hear these stories and decided to ask the webmaster to set up something called Furry Fables.

Keep checking for this...it will be added soon!

Charlotte's new friend Picasso is still having problems with his balance but he has found the perfect place to stop him from rolling...in between Gwen and John in bed! Gwen and John don't get any sleep but Picasso seems very comfortable and Gwen is always saying..."The animals come first." Despite his condition, this amazing bunny loves life. He manages to eat his way through his dry mix, 2 slices of bread, a weetabix, porridge oats and cabbage every day.

Sam the dog has definately made himself at home. Charlotte continues to chase him but it is more like a game to them now.

More next week!

Week 40

Charlotte was watching Gwen with great interest last night; she kept counting her fingers! It was no good, she had to ask…”What are you doing Gwen?” she said.

“Well,” said Gwen, “I’ve been adding up the number of animals that we re-homed last year!”

Here are the figures:

319 Rabbits
183 Guinea pigs
3 Chinchillas
1 Ferret
1 Dog

A grand total of 507 furry friends !!!

We have some good news on Picasso, the bunny with ecuniculi, he has moved into Charlotte’s apartment. She is more lively and running around the house. We think she was becoming a bit of a couch potato!

She is also excited because Gwen has ordered her one of the Bunny Burrow Fund Raising Sweatshirts and is also looking forward to seeing the new Bunny Burrow greetings cards which have been printed with the new logo. They should be arriving from the printers very soon.

She would also like to wish KYLIE A BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR SUNDAY!!!

Here is Charlotte and nearly all of Picasso!

Week 41

Charlotte is proud and pleased to tell everyone that Bunny Burrows has now received its charity number. Congratulations Gwen and John and everyone else involved in making this possible. Hopefully this will go a long way in securing the long term future of Bunny Burrows.

This week, Charlotte has decided to have a warning sign fitted to her door…BEWARE OF PICASSO! Despite his tilted head and balance problems due to ecuniculi, he has become very protective of Charlotte and the home they share. It appears that he is frightened of nothing, even Jade and Sam the two dogs, who needless to say are rather larger than Picasso. Poor Jade, unaware Picasso was lying in his house dared to pop her head in the doorway to try and pinch some food. Picasso jumped up and growled at the nerve of Jade entering his home without permission. The poor dog got such a fright she bumped her head on the cage door as she hurriedly made her escape.

Little Sam also had a scary encounter. He saw Picasso munching on something in the dining room and decided he might like to share it. Sam ran over and was just about to help himself when the now famous ‘Picasso growl’ made him jump and run back to the safety of Gwen’s chair!

Week 42

This week has been a sad time at Bunny Burrows, as some of you may already know, Fabby died. Charlotte recalls when she first came to live at BB seeing this very large rabbit and thinking she’d better stay well clear of her. It wasn’t long after that Charlotte came to realise that Fabby was just a gentle giant who loved life at BB. We’ll all miss her says Charlotte.

The love affair continues to blossom between Picasso and Charlotte and he missed her very much when she was at the Bradford Championships last weekend with Gwen and John. We might add that Gwen and John were not there to show any of the bunnies it was purely for educational purposes, advising the public on caring for their small furries etc. However, Gwen and John discovered something themselves; Charlotte is not a Silver Fox as they thought, she is a medium martin sable. Before arriving at Bunny Burrows she had probably been stolen for her excellent breed and had her leg broken to remove a tag of identification and then dumped when the thief got scared!

Since arriving at BB, Charlotte has been spayed and had her front teeth removed due to problems. She now enjoys life to the full being a pet bunny who wants for nothing, not even a boyfriend anymore!

Week 43

It's weeks like this that Charlotte is so pleased she lives in Gwen's dining room. Just the sound of the wind outside makes her shiver and think about all those bunnies and pigs less fortunate than her that have maybe been forgotten about at the bottom of someone's garden. So, this week she has been busy putting a bit of advice together.

If your bunny or pig lives outside and it is not possible to put them in an outdoor building for the winter months, make sure their hutch is in a sheltered position away from strong winds and rain. Make sure it does not rest directly on the ground and that it has a sloping, overhanging roof to keep the furries dry when it rains. A heavy duty plastic cover should be brought over the top and down the front of the hutch when the weather is really bad. Give extra bedding, newspapers and straw and hay on really cold days and nights.

With the winds as bad as this week when trucks were being blown over, it might be an idea to secure the hutch to a wall or the ground to prevent the possibility of it blowing over.

So...keep warm and dry all you furries out there, I'm gonna hop back into my house now and snuggle up to Picasso and be thankful for the good life I have.

Week 44

It’s been such a busy week; just as one bunny or guinea pig was re-homed another one arrived. Also, it is approaching that time of year when baby bunnies are bought in abundance, then very quickly forgotten about when they start to grow. If anyone is thinking of having a bunny as a family pet…you could call into Bunny Burrows Hot X Bunny Day on March 24th at the Market Hall in Richmond and find out more about the care of small animals.

Charlotte is beginning to realise what a ‘wanderer’ Picasso is! He never seems to be at home, he’s always hopping around somewhere, getting up to mischief. Gwen has two ornaments that he has taken a dislike to and whenever he gets the chance he knocks them over! Fortunately, they are near the floor level so they haven’t broken…YET!

He has taken to chasing poor Sam the dog and also nudging anyone who gets in his way. One day last week, Barbara and Derek the rabbit called to see Gwen and on their way they had popped into the shop for a packet of ginger snaps. Barbara had them in her bag which was on the floor, while her and Gwen had a cup of tea. Next thing she knew, Picasso had gone into her bag, opened the biscuits and started munching on them. It must be great having a bunny with character!!!

Week 45

Lots of comings and goings this week at Bunny Burrows. No sooner has Gwen found a home for an unwanted furry then another one arrives and the process starts again.

Everyone is still trying to come to terms with loosing Fabby and Gwen has been very concerned for little Bucks Fizz; he has seemed so unhappy and lonely since Fabby died. Well…the good news is, two French lops came to BB to be re-homed, Paris and her daughter Mizpah. After an unsuccessful pairing with Mizpah we are glad to tell you Paris and Bucks have hit it off. So, to the relief of everyone, Bucks has a new friend! He will always remember his beloved Fabby but we are sure Paris will keep him happy and free from the loneliness he was beginning to feel. We are also pleased to say that Mizpah found a loving home.

Charlotte was pleased to see some of the bunnies playing in the garden this week as the weather was suddenly milder. She cannot wait for Spring and Summer so they can all enjoy lazing in the sunshine. Of course she now has Picasso to hop around the garden with and we wonder if he’ll oblige when she asks him to rub her back with suntan oil!

Week 46

Well…just when Charlotte thought she could start hunting her Spring frock out, Winter crept back around the corner. So…it’s back to the old bed socks, although she does have Picasso now to keep her warm!

A busy week at the Burrows; the February newsletter was finalised and by now those of you who get one should, hopefully, have a copy. Gwen had lots of Easter cards to write, we were sure she’d end up with writer’s cramp!

Charlotte hopped into the bottom building this week to see how Bucks was getting along with his new love, Paris. She needn’t have worried her fluffy head as the two have become very close and although he still misses Fabby he seems much happier with Paris by his side.

Here is the handsome twosome!

Week 47

This week Charlotte has been on a bit of a girls’ night out with Gwen and Ruby. She thought it was about time she did a bit of socialising; after all, Picasso is often out and about hopping around the living room, especially if anyone calls or if there is a new bunny arrival.

So, on Wednesday she visited the Jack n Jill nursery in Burneston. The little children were very excited to see her and the other furries that Gwen had taken along. Nurseries are a good place to visit as it is sometimes the first time the young children have experienced touching or holding a small animal. Because the pets that Bunny Burrows take with them are carefully chosen for their kind and gentle nature, this gives the children confidence to touch them.

On Friday, Charlotte visited a group of older children, a Sunday school group from Brompton-on-Swale. Again, the children were excited to see the animals and listened with great interest to Gwen talking about how they are looked after.

When everyone returned home, Picasso was still hopping around the living room but spared a moment to welcome Charlotte back. Sometimes it’s nice to do your own thing but at the end of the day they always snuggle up together, ready for another hectic day at the Burrows.

Week 48

As usual, things have been pretty busy at BB this week and the fact that Hot X Bunny Day is only 2 weeks away has made things even busier. Infact, Charlotte thought Gwen and Ruby had been overdoing it abit when she spotted them putting storage jars and mugs into the oven. I don’t think John would find those very appetising for his tea she thought. Then she realised they weren’t to eat, they were part of the new BB merchandise to be sold on March 24th in Richmond Market Hall. They were being put into the oven to ‘cure’ the BB logo which has been put on them.

On Thursday, Charlotte visited the 14th Darlington Cubs and as usual, they all loved her and the other furries.

Seems like Charlotte had her wires crossed a few times this past week. On Friday, she heard John say that Jade and Sammy, the BB dogs were going to be micro-waved!!! Of course it was one of John’s jokes…what he meant to say was the vet was calling to micro-chip them! Jade was very brave and took it in her stride but Sammy was a typical male and made a huge fuss by yelping and whimpering afterwards. Micro-chipping is well worth thinking about if you have dogs as it adds a bit more security to them. If they did get lost and picked up they could be identified and returned to their owners.

Week 49

Charlotte and Picasso are so excited, there’s only one week to go to Hot X Bunny Day. As our regulars know, Picasso loves to run around the living room and dining room but lately there have been lots of obstacles in his way because of Hot X Bunny Day. Bags of educational leaflets and boxes of the new BB Merchandise to navigate around. Although he did admit to enjoying a secret game of Roll the Tuppence with Charlotte. The game board had been left behind the chair in the living room and when no one was around the two adventurous buns thought they’d try it out! Only one slight problem…they couldn’t find any 2 pences to roll. So they ingeniously used a few of their droppings!!

They both enjoyed it immensely and of course on Hot X Bunny Day there will be prizes to be won. Charlotte hopes to meet some of the people who read about her, so if possible, get yourself along. Feel free to give Charlotte or Picasso a ring if you need directions. 01748 824788.

Finally, Charlotte would like to say how much she enjoyed meeting the Jack n Jill nursery group from Thirsk.

Until next week…

Week 50

It's been all hands to the litter trays this week at the Burrows with the final preparations for the HOT X BUNNY DAY. If you don’t already know, it’s on SUNDAY MARCH 24th. Charlotte and some of her furry friends will be there to join in the fun.

Just find your way to Richmond town centre and look for the big WELCOME TO BUNNY BURROWS banner outside the market hall. Rumour has it that Gwen will be dressed as a bunny, so that in itself is worth a look!!!

Other attractions include:
Roll a tuppence
Tombola
Bunny Burrows merchandise which includes sweatshirts-mugs-storage jars
Refreshments to include hot cross buns-bunny biscuits-sandwiches-tea-coffee
Jewellery stall
See the spinning lady in action-spinning bunny fur
Face painting
Bunny related products
Book stall
Bunny hutches
…and lots of free information

SEE YOU THERE!

Week 51

We can honestly say that our first Hot X Bunny Day in the market hall in Richmond was a huge success. It has been estimated that at least 1500 people came to visit…the atmosphere was electric!

Thank you everyone.

Bunny Burrows furry residents made a great impact on the public. The 12 bunnies and 4 guinea pigs were unaffected by the crowds and noise, although we did have a veterinary nurse watching over them.

Lots of visitors stayed and had lunch in the refreshment corner and then went for a second look around! There were lots of good quality items to buy from the stalls including jewellery, books, bunny products, original artwork and Bunny Burrows own merchandise of mugs, storage jars, candles and greetings cards sold extremely well. The spinning demonstration was appreciated by all ages…it’s not as easy as it looks.

The market hall has already been booked for Hot X Bunny Day2 next year!

Week 52

Even with Hot X Bunny day over for this year, there’s still hardly any time to take a breath at BB. On Thursday, Charlotte went to Ridgeways Nursery in Richmond, she just loves those little children and then Easter Weekend signaled the start of the craft fair season so she was at Richmond Market Hall to help out on the BB stall. This is a regular event on Sundays right through the spring and summer months, so, if you fancy a day out it’s well worth a look. You can also see some of the BB gang!

It’s been a lovely week, weather wise, time to get the furries out in the fresh air but it would be worth checking out any of your out-door equipment for damage which may have occurred during the Winter months. A little reminder too, are any of your buns due their vaccinations for VHD or Myxo? It should be stressed that even house rabbits still need to be protected from these awful diseases, it’s not just the outdoor buns that can catch them. Also, the flies are out, so look for flystrike. You should check your furries bottom regularly, at least once a day and make sure it is thoroughly clean. There is a fly repellant spray on the market, available at good pet stores. It helps a great deal but by no means eliminates the need to check your bun. Fly strike develops extremely quickly once the flies have laid their eggs and if not spotted promptly can be fatal to the bunny.

On a brighter note to finish this week, Charlotte took Picasso into the garden for their first glimpse of green grass together. Of course Charlotte had seen it all before but picasso was totally enthralled by it. She just sat back and watched while he sniffed the ground and was amused when he started to leap around and skip through the air…Hmmm, there’s life in the old boy yet, she smiled!
