Welcome to Butterknowle Village Hall

(three hundred and eleven pounds eleven shillings) which in today's terms would equate to somewhere in the region of £4000

Foundation stones to commemorate the building of the hall were laid by Mr J.A Makepeace and Mr T.W. When the recent alterations took place the foundation stones had to be removed and are now on display as part of the new foyer. The website editor is grateful to Million Makepeace for the above image. Million is the son of Mr J.A.Makepeace and is currently the chairman of The Gaunless Valley History Trust.

In 2000 The Village Hall Association received a lottery grant from the community fund of £125595 for extensive refurbishment of the facility. This included the provision of a handsome pitched roof to replace the original flat roof. Click on the link below if you would like more information about the community fund.

The Village Hall is one of the 30 members of The Teesdale Village Halls Consortium which was set up in 1999 with the objective of achieving "An improvement in the conditions of life for the inhabitants of the parishes served by village halls and community centres in the Teesdale District of County Durham"
