Board School Boys c 1901

photo - courtesy of Dennis King

"The Board School known affectionately as T'bordies, was built in 1884 for boys and girls, and remained in use until 1972. There were separate departments in the one building, with a wall dividing the playground, and remained so until the late 1950's. Each child paid fourpence a week, then twopence a week , before the Education Act was passed in 1891. The windows were deliberately high, so that the scholars were not distracted by the outside world.Attendance was poor. Discipline was very good, with great respect shown to the teachers." Vera tells a rather sad tale of a front row group of Board School boys who faced the photographer with a neat row of shiny new boots probably for the first time - only for them to be returned to the boot and shoe fund department afterwards. Here they are looking very smart.

I believe the photograph was taken by Vera herself...and it's unlikely that the pupils have ever seen it...and a lively class it looks!
