Grangetown Boys' Club c 1940's

Grangetown Boys' Club c 1940's - courtesy of Dennis King

Grangetown Boys' Club - a nationally acclaimed phenomenum of the fifties and sixties when they reaped awards and prizes for Drama and Boxing, led by mild mannered, pipe-smoking, Charlie Smales known affectionately as The Boss.

Wally Daly

Just been listening to the Wally Daly tape about Grangetown, loaned to me by Dennis King, where Wally relives his formative experiences in his fiftieth year - reading short extracts from his writings on Vaughan Street with its references to inspirational street names such as Bobby Parsons who fell through the bombed house whilst playing with Spud Murphy - a story I never knew and which muat have ended happily because I was a good friend of Bob’s in latter years whilst attending nightschool at Redcar Tech - Mary Wrigglesworth, Reg Tonkin, - interspersed cleverly with the strong mellow tones of Ron Angel and the Fettlers’ singing “Ore boats Tooting on the River, Ring Of Iron.
What an excellent production it was - his meeting with Charlie Smales, Lou Oliver, Joe Mullen Margaret Heseltine and where Sid France’s deep resonant tones describe the bigoted past between the Catholics and Prods - Craig Hornby aged 23 - bursting with enthusiasm as ever about his new venture North of the Road, and the 'Whistling Wally' tale - where Wally discusses his play - and his father - and as an accession to his maturing years suggests a more tolerant version of his father’s life than the one portrayed originally where he admits that life is what you make it wherever you happen to be. It deserves another showing.

To make sure that as many people as possible are able to view the following pictures of the club and its members - I'm going to split the photograph into groups for easy viewing.
The restriction of file size for websites is occasionally inhibiting - and this is one of those occasions. However...

Sam Pearsall seems to be on this picture - second left leaning over - taken at Boy's Club Camp Scalby near Scarborough - where all of the boys seem to be preoccupied with getting a taste of whatever is in the large tin cans. Is that the campfire to the front?

Vin Fox thinks that his brother Eugene may be on it with Jackie Mannix and the Mullen brothers John and Bernard.

Sam with a group of friends - Johnny Stubbs, Vince Noteyoung, and Jackie "Kipper" Brooks; peeping in between is Ian Lancaster -taken about the same time as the previous photo - so the location must be Scarborough area.

Sam was originally a Vickers Street lad and a great friend of Bob Turner who lived across the road at number 29.

After early experiences in the local steelworks as a paint boy and bricklayer, Dick's leisure time as a fully committed member of Grangetown Boys' Club led him to becoming a full-time professional Youth Leader after a lengthy training course in Swansea. He worked in Grangetown as a leader and later in Whitby until eventually becoming Youth Organiser for Tyne and Wear District. He still lives in North Shields.
