Organised by Marion Atkinson, the re-union was very successful and Doreen Bone's aunt apparently has pictures of the opening of the school in 1935. A few people spotted during the evening were: Barry Croucher, Linda Croucher, the Prest Brothers ( who had a Rock Group at one time), the Bennetts from Kingsley Road, the Lawlors? from Dalton Road, the Jennings sisters, Pam Green and many, many more. A great night was had by all.

The School Badge

The School Badge - courtesy of Ron Vickers

Ron says this is a Wyvern - a fierce legendary cousin of the true dragon which used to eat farmer's livestock apparently...Can anyone tell us who chose the badge design?

The Sir William Worsley Wyvern was chosen because the school was named after the Grandfather of the Duchess of Kent. The family home is at Hovingham, & the family Coat of Arms is our school badge. The Sir William of that time was the Lord Lt. of the North Riding of Yorkshire. If you go to Hovingham, just opposite the Hall you will see a pub called 'The Worsley Arms' & its sign shows the wyvern.

Class of 1950

Class of 1950 - courtesy of George Johnson

My class in 1950 - But for some reason there is afew missing. We were then moved to South Bank, where I still commuted to the Worsleys for my last year of schooling going on the trolley buses, with my long time friend,Wilf Knight, who incidentally is the unknown in photo of Grangetowners in Blackpool. I was also,in the same class, as the other Guys in the photo, Geoff Johns, Col Joy, Bill Evans, & Rob Speakman.

Hello again John,
Some more information, regarding the photo of the class of 1950 - the names of the boys in the back row are:-
Davey(taffy)Richardson, John Dawes, Ray Huddlestone, Bill Cuthbert, Derick Roberts, Unknown, Brian Milsom, Tom Bayliss, Billy Russell.
I had this photo given me by the wide eyed girl standing behind & left of Mr Jones the Teacher. Her name then was Margaret Atinson,(now Mrs Brian Wilson ex Birchington Ave.
My wife Eileen & myself, were on day out shopping in Newcastle(Australia)about 55kms from Nelson Bay where we live. I sat down next to this guy while I waited for my wife coming out of the shop. I said, Hi to him. When he spoke, I said you sound like you're from the North East. He said, Yes I'm from a place called Grangetown and went to the Worsleys School. I said I went there too. I told him about the names of people in my class that I remembered.
He said, "Do you remember a girl called Margaret Atkinson? I said " Yes. " He said, That's my wife." At that, she came out of the shop. We introduced ourselves - after numerous cups of coffee and do you remembers, we had a ball.
Fancy that! After 57 years and 17,000 kilometres from home, you meet an old school mate.
We see Margaret and husband Brian when we go to town occasionally. Incidentally, he lived in "Birchy" next door to Bunty Hart who I grew up with in Low Lackenby. Small world isn't it?

On the subject of Lackenby, I think you might have queried Portas's field, ( Porter's) I was at school with Malcolm Portas - the family lived Pochin Rd/Stapylton St? area). I was led to believe it was their field. I could be wrong
By the way John when we were young fellows(about 15/16yrs), we used to hang out at Lannys'. One of the guys was Vin O'Neill - any relation to you?
Best Regards
George Johnson Nov 2007

Class of 58

I have been visiting the Cardboard City webpage and looking at old photos of Sir William Worsley School, which prompted me to go searching through my old photos. I have found a school group dating from 1957-1958. Having lived in Australia for the last 35 years, the only person I can name on the photo is myself. I would like to attach the photo for your webpage - how? I am third from the left in the middle row (Clive Thurston). I believe second on the left middle row to be David Thornton, and third from the right middle row is Billy Bishop. Seven from the left back row may be Wilf Austin and that is about as far as my memory takes me back to that time in my life.

I have some other old photos of the Police Station, Board School, etc and can forward these soon for your perusal and maybe inclusion in your pages.

Keep up the good work.

Clive Thurston

School Trip?

School Trip?

Hi John,
Could you put this picture on the site?
Can you help me on this picture?

It was taken either on a school trip (SWW) or one of the parents clubs outings to the seaside.

From L-R is Doreen (nee Massingham) next to her is Amy (nee Caswell) the lady and other girl not known, Do any of our Grangetown friends know the names of the other two?
Doreen and Amy are aged 11 or 12.
Any help would be appreciated by the family of the late Doreen.
Thanks John
Elaine
