Eston Grange village existed as a separate entity in this area in the 1881 Census.
We must remind ourselves that Grangetown's eight streets did not begin construction until this year. So the early inhabitants of this small community were some of the early pioneers along with the Grangetown cottages, Eston Junction and Low Lackenby

The Field Family of Eston Grange c 1900

A fine example of a family photograph taken outside their property in Eston Grange - and the first picture I have ever seen close-up of one of the dwellings in that old row of houses which existed before Grangetown itself.
Back Row L/R
Mr.Field (overseer at Bolckow Vaughan) Mary Field.(daughter)
Middle Row: James Field,(son) Mrs Field holding Cecilia Field (who died Xmas 2002 in her 90`s)Richard Henry Field (son) aged 7/8 (who was the father of John Field who donated this snap) and at the front Lillian Field (who died Dec 2001)
A Lily Field - born in 1887 - father Isaac - lived in 14 Laing Street in 1894 and she and her sister Ruth who was born a year later in 1888 - both attended Grangetown Board School for a short time in 1895 until leaving in December of that year. Perhaps they moved to Eston Grange? But this Lily Field would have been 113 in 2001 - so I presume they were earlier relatives of the family above. I wonder. |

An interesting address for Mr A Wilkinson is Braemar, Bolckow Road, Grangetown.
One wonders where this house/business was precisely. Perhaps it was it the detached house which stood forlornly opposite the Lyric Cinema - Pit entrance -( there's another strange choice of name for the "dabs" ) where the cheapest seats could be obtained - Was it a throwback to mining days? |

Joan's parents were Joe Sanders (also called Beecham) who lived at 14 and Mary Jane Fields at 18. They married in 1929 and lived at Number 14 where Joan was born along with her brother Richard. Other families remembered in the row include the Blands and Harrisons. Her husband John was originally from Grangetown and emigrated to Canada in 1951. Joan followed in 1952. They now live near Vancouver, British Columbia. |

The Hieron Sisters 1908
 | The Hieron Sisters 1908 - courtesy of Brenda Birch
My Mum Ida Wilson nee Gatiss was born in 15 Eston Grange 1916 (and still going) d/o Tom & Esther Gatiss. She recalls that the two girls were Hieron sisters one of whom was called Emily. This family lived at 24 Eston Grange. the little one in the photo is Linda Alberta Gatiss, her sister, who was born in 1906 , whom the sisters used to sometimes mind.
Unfortunately this is all the info I have. Brenda.
PS I was born in Eston Grange as well.
