What The Parish Council Do For You

What does the Parish Council do for the ordinary man & woman in the street?

Various Parish Councillors have received critical comments from members of the public in recent weeks asking what does the Parish Council do for them?
The Parish Council, in its own modest way, provides services for its parishioners from the cradle to the grave.
Firstly, the Parish Council provides an annual financial contribution to a local Toddlers' Group to help with the Group's running costs.
Secondly, the Parish Council provides funds every year to buy Play Equipment for children in each Parish Area in turn. Members of the Parish Council also agreed at their Meeting on 15th December 2004 to consult with a local community group to ask what types of Play Equipment it wishes to be provided for local children in Bowburn.
Thirdly, the Parish Council is providing the money to construct a new Bus Shelter on Dallymore Drive in Bowburn for members of the public on the relevant bus routes to use. The new Shelter will put an end to the need for bus users to shelter on the wrong side of the road in inclement weather and risk their safety crossing the road when their own bus arrives at the right stop.
Fourthly, the Parish Council regularly provides funds for new Street Lighting Columns in the Parish when the County Council does not have the funds to provide them. New Lighting Columns have been installed in Bowburn, Cassop & Parkhill in recent years.
Fifthly, the Parish Council is providing funds (alongside the Countryside Agency and Awards for All amongst others) to convert a disused allotment site on Bow Street & Burn Street, Bowburn into a Green/Communal Area for the peaceful recreational use of all of the residents of Bowburn.
Sixthly, the Parish Council provided the land for the site of the much needed New Medical Centre in Bowburn which was completed in 2002.
Lastly, the Parish Council provides a Burial Ground for use of the Parishioners at the end of their lives where relatives can erect a suitable monument to their loved one with permission of the Parish Council and visit the burial place at their leisure.
Please don't forget that the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Parish Council and all Parish Councillors perform their duties without any form of payment.
I hope that this note gives parishioners a flavour of the range of services that the Parish Council provides for its parishioners year in and year out.

Merry Christmas!

Peter Thorpe,
Parish Clerk.
