It's A Cat's Life
They`ve been climbing frames and tunnels
Cat flaps and funnels
Baskets and hammocks, fur lined I might add
They`ve been litter trays that match
And posts that they can scratch
Isn`t there anything these two cats have not had?

They`ve had mice that do spin
They`ve had fish with real fins
And cat nip that casts a spell
You think that is all
Then look in my hall
They`ve claimed my new table as well.

There has been medicines and potions
Eye drops and lotions
Injections and vets bills to pay
Tinned food, dried food, cat treats and fish
And litter to go in the tray.

If you think I am complaining
Then you would be wrong
In fact, it`s the other way round
I`ve just thought of this rhyme,
to get printed you see
So you`d know what treasures I`ve found.

Jennifer Allen

From The Cat.

I thank you for the food you bring,
and for my little squeaky thing.
I thank you for your friendly talks,
and when you change my litter tray.
I thank you for the naps we share,
and putting up with tufts of hair.
I thank you for these things you do,
but thank you most for being you.

What? A cat can`t get sentimental? What rubbish.

Unknown.

Cat Logic.

What kind of logic does it take
For you dear little cat
To think if it rains at the front of the house
It might be sunny and dry at the back.

I opened the door this morning for you
And the rain came tumbling down
You looked at me rather balefully
And gave me your feline frown.

"I can`t stand here all day" I said
Trying to move you. "I wish I could"
You let out a yowl like something from hell
Whipped round and attacked my foot.

You thought it was my fault. You don`t understand
That rain is a natural phenemenon.
{The inability to grasp meteorologic facts
In cats, I believe, is a common thing}.

So then you went to the kitchen door.
What were you expecting to see?
A tropical paradise with blazing sun,
White beaches, the odd palm tree?.

You must think the back yard`s another world
Or that the weather is controlled by wishing.
But it wasn`t to be, and again you blamed me
And sat there with your tail swishing,

You looked at me disappointedly
And again I tried to explain
That somebody else, in a much higher place
Not me, is in charge of the rain.

What kind of confidence must it take
In your importance, and my ability
To think that the world and it`s weather systems
Are controlled, for you, by me?.

Louie Parkin.

Application.

Ahem!
I am available,
I have no home.
No friends,
And no immediate prospects.

Not to give you a hard luck story,
But things have not been going,
So well for me lately.
I had a nice family,
But the old lady died
And the man hated cats.
So out I went.

You can see, I know how to look agfter myself,
Though I don`t know for how much longer.
In a filthy street,
And no decent place to clean up.
I`ve been used to good things.

Housebroke? Of course,
Completley,
I am rather loyal.

I wouls be your cat -
Show it I mean,
When people come to visit,
By making a fuss over you.
And responding when you called me.

I`m not too finicky about food.
Food: Oh dear!
My stomach is empty,
And my heart is desolate.

I`m not meant to be a street cat,
Or make myself a furtive shadow,
In an alley.
I`m lonely, lonely, lonely,
And frightened!
Please may I come in?.

Paul Gallico.

Cats Sleep.

Cats sleep
Anywhere,
Any table,
Any chair,
Top of the piano,
Window ledge,
In the middle,
On the edge.
Open draw,
Empty shoe,
Anybody`s
Lap will do.
Fitted in a
Cardboard box.
In the cupboard,
With your frocks.
Anywhere!
They don`t care!
Cats sleep
Anywhere.

Eleanor Farjeon.

My Lazy Cats.

My cats sit lazing in the sun,
Come on boys. Where`s your sense of fun?
Don`t you think, it`s time to play
I can read your minds, please go away,

I bring the mouse, the straw
Why do you find these toy`s such a bore?
You used to play with them for hours on end
Now they seem to drive you round the bend.

I know something that might do the trick
Rattle your food tin, or am I being thick?
No, this idea apparently worked a treat
I can hear the patter of thundering feet.

Kookie charges to the left, Duskie to the right
Gobble, chewing, munching, with all their might,
Duskie finishes first, and goes to Kookie`s bowl
But Kookie fights him off with all his soul.

Food finished, milk drank up in a lap
Stop scratching that suite, otherwise a slap
Which one of you was being so naughty?
You both look at me so prim and haughty.

Charging off along the hall
Have you gone to find the ball?
No such luck, you are straight into my bed
And all I can see are two rows of Z`s!.

Anita Christie.

Stray Cat.

Oh, what unhappy twist of fate-
Has brought you homeless to my gate?
The gate where once another stood
To beg for shelter, warmth and food.
From that day I ceased to be
The Master of my Destiny
While he, with purr and velvet paw
Became within my house, the Law.
He scratched the furniture and shed,
And claimed the middle of my bed,
He ruled with Arrogance and Pride.
And broke my heart the day he died.
So if you really think, Oh Cat
I`d willingly relive all that
Because you come, forlorn and thin
Well....Don`t just stand there. Come on In.

Francis Witham.

Cats And Coats.

Have you counted every dot
And blot and spot on Ocelot?
Admired his coat so soft and pale
With bars and bands around the tail?.

Or Tawney Tiger`s stripes that pass
Unnoticed in the desert grass?
Who would think his coat of fire,
Could look like silk and feel like wire?

Lions coat plain old brown
With under vest of pale down,
Seems scarcely good enough to me,
For the mighty King he`s supposed to be.

Take a look at lanky Cheeta;
Built for speed, a record beater.
Even spotted golds and creams
Are not his choice of coat it seems,
According to his scowling face....
But he is the king of any race!.

Aloof and beautiful is the Lynx,
As proud and God-like as a sphinx;
Rust or golden, sparsely speckled,
You could say his coat is freckled.

More elaborate by far,
The Sumptous coat of Jaguar
Is patterned with a rich mosaic,
While altogether more prosaic....
The mighty Cheetah likes to drowse
Full lenght along the lofty boughs,
Concealed in coats that`s richly stippled.
Yet the Sand cats coat id rippled,
Cerval, Margay, Mountain Cat,
Kodkod and Flat headed Cat -
{there are such things - I`ve checked on that}
To each his special habitat.

Some are stubby, some are sleek
And everyone is unique....

And here`s one more, extremely rare;
He likes to steal my easy chair -
A fearsome beast with vice like jaws
Who`s over keen to use his claws;
He`s Tabby-Coated, round and small
And he`s my cat....The Best Of All!.

Cat Rescue.

We ask for help and know they will be there.
I call them angels - maybe you`ll agree,
Each day comes with a heavy cross to bear -
The work they do, the suffering they see:

The pet discarded on the motorway
To fall, alas, beneath a moving wheel.
Her shattered limbs are tended day by day;
Her shattered trust, they know will never heal.

The sad old stray who searches by the bin.
Unloved, infed, thin coat alive with fleas -
For him a meal, sweet bath and tortured skin,
A cosy bed, where he can sleep in peace.

The tiny kittens, precious mother dead;
Without her care, they`ll struggle to survive.
Kind Foster mum, will see each one is fed,
Forgoing sleep to keep her babies alive.

Such is their compassion and their care -
Each small success to keep their spirits strong -
They work their miracles and cheat despair -
A balance for the days when things go wrong.

For when their efforts prove to be in vain,
When every ounce of loving care they gave
Was not enough, they strive to hide the pain,
And grieve for little friends they could not save.

They plead their cause:
Each suffering pet has earned,
A second chance, a home where they are free,
Where love so freely given, is returned:
Friends for life, as they are meant to be.

Angels crave no honours, only claim
To match with love, the cruelty of man,
Protecting cats is their enduring aim,
And ours must be, to help them all we can.

Anne Burridge.

Black Cat.

A cat as black
As blackest coal
Is out upon
His midnight stroll,
His steps are soft.
His walk is slow
His eyes are gold
They flash and glow.
And so I run,
And so I duck,
I do not need
His black-cat luck.

Unknown.

Two Cats.

Two cats
One up a tree
One under the tree
The cat up a tree is he
The cat under the tree is a she
The tree is witch elm, just incidentally
He takes no notice of she, she takes no notice of he.
He stares at the woolly clouds passing, she stares at the tree.
There`s been alot written about cats, by Old Possum, Yeats and company,
But not Alfred de Musset or Lord Tennyson or Poe or anybody.
Wrote about one cat under, and one cat up a tree,
God knows why, this should be left for me
Except I like cats, as cats be
Especially one cat up,
And one cat under,
A witch elm,
tree.

Hamlet`s Cat`s Soliloquy.

To go outside, and there perchance to stay
Or remain within: that is the question:
Whether `tis better for a cat to suffer
The cuffs and buffets of inclement weather
That Nature rains on those who roam abroad,
Or take a nap upon a scrap of carpet,
And so by dozing melt the solid hours
That clog the clock`s bright gears with sullen time
And stall the dinner bell. To sit, to stare
Outdoors, and by a stare to seem to state
A wish to venture forth without delay
Then when the portal`s opened up, to stand
As if transfixed by doubt. To prowl; to sleep;
To choose not knowing when once more
Our readmittance gain: aye, there`s the hairball;
For if a paw were shaped to turn a knob,
Or work a lock, or slip a window-catch
And going out, and coming in, were made
As simple as the breaking of a bowl,
What cat would bear the household`s petty plagues
The cook`s well-practised kicks, the butler`s broom,
The infant`s careless pokes, the tickled ears,
The trampled tail, and all the daily shocks
The fur is heir to, when, of his own free will
He might his exodus, or entrance make
With a mere mitten? Who would spaniel`s fear,
Or strays trespassing from a neighbours yard,
But that the dread of our unheeded cries
And scratches at the barricaded door
No claws can open up, dispel our nerve
And makes us rather bear our human`s faults
Than run away to unguessed miseries?
Thus caution doth make house cats of us all;
And thus the bristling hair of resolution
Is softened up with the pale brush of thought,
And since our choices hinge on weighty things,
We pause upon the threshold od decision.

I Didn`t Ask To Be A Stray.

With heavy heart and weary paws
I walk the wet streets, shunned, ignored
Thinking of my life before.

Once I had a loving home
But now the cold streets I must roam
Down on my luck and all alone.

Crouching in some hedge by day
Dodging kicks that come my way
Nothing but a hungry stray.

Inside the houses warm and light
Live my cousins - their future bright
While I must cower out of sight.

Can`t you spare a scrap or two?
Or a cosy box in the living room?
Might I come and live with you?.

I`m really friendly, if given a chance -
So won`t you give me a second chance?
Instead of a distainful glance.

I really wouldn`t take much space
I`d wash my grimy paws and face
All I wnat is my own warm place.

It isn`t fun to live this way
No-one to love, no time for play
I didn`t ask to be a stray.........

Naming Your Cat

Naming your cat is a most serious time
And choosing it wrongly considered a crime.
You may not consider this a serious matter,
But a badly named cat, can go mad as a hatter.
So please read these words before you start mocking,
And the 'Cat Name Police' come round and start knocking.

Imagine for a moment, that you're a big tom,
Who can't understand where his owner went wrong.
You go out for your nightly business and ramble,
When the cat from next door asks for your handle.
Do you shout out your name, with feeling and pride,
Or meekly squeak 'Tiddles' and then run and hide.

For a correctly named cat, can afford to walk tall,
Not cower in shame at the thought of its call.
Give its name thought, and consider your feelings,
For its you that calls them in, for the evenings.
So consider a moment as to whether you care.
When you're standing outside shouting 'Sonny' and 'Cher.'

Try something different when choosing a name.
For a cat who's called 'Snookie' will know whose to blame.
So dig out those books, from authors aplenty,
You'll find at least one, a dozen or twenty.
If after reading, you're still not too sure,
Maybe it's time for some more literature.

Try something Biblical, from Gideons or James,
Such as Samson, Delilah, Salomé or Kane.
Jacob or Lazarus, the list just goes on,
Like David, Goliath or King Solomon.
Testaments try both the old and the new,
Unless your cats Muslim or Orthodox Jew.

A good literary name, for your cats not a sin.
So try Fagin, Aphelia, or perhaps Gunga Din.
Viola or Shylock may suit their charm.
You could even try Xanadu or Kubla K'han
If Shakespeare or Dickens, wont suit them either
Try a different approach it may bring you nearer.

If your poetic puss meow seems to rhyme
Then Byron or Keats may suit this feline.
If classical music is something they've wished,
Then Mozart or Wagner or perhaps even Lizt.
Faust or Saint Saens may seem a little too hard,
Though they may suit your cat if it likes the macabre.

If a historical tyrant, reminds you of him
Then Napoleon, Nero, Ghengis or Ming
You may question those with despotic turns,
But surely only a cat, could watch while Rome burns.
But if chivalry seems close to their heart,
Then Gwain or Gwuinivere might do for a start.

If your cats demeana has a criminal flair,
You could use Moriarty, but you better beware!
For a cat who's names Raffles will be a great thief,
Call him McCavity and he'll defy all belief.
For cats with such names stealth becomes habit
and start stealing food, or dealing in cat-nip

So here's one word of warning, before you decide
On naming your feline Jekyll or Hyde.
A cat takes its name in spirit and word,
I know you may think this is really absurd,
But to a cat a name is an identity label,
To which it will form itself if it is able.

If after searching through closets and books
No name that you choose quite suits his looks.
And if after all this, you still haven't a clue,
There is still one more thing that you could do.
You could leave it simple and matter of fact,
And just call him Felidae, For he is, just a cat.

Cat In Moonlight.

Through moonlight`s milk
She slowly passes
As soft as silk
Between tall grasses.
I watch her go
So sleek and white
As white as snow
The moon so bright
I hardly know
White moon, white fur,
Which is the light
And which is her.

Douglas Gibson.

Poem About A Cat

As the cat
climbed over
The top of

the jamcloser
first the right
forefoot

carefully
then the hind
stepped down

into the pit of
the empty
flowerpot.

William Carlos Williams.

Cheshire Dawn.

They pounced on me
And there they sat
The purring sun
And the rising cat.
And it stayed with me
As the day wore on,
The indelible smile
Of Cheshire Dawn.

Victoria Forrester.

Pussy Cat.

A pussy cat with yellow eyes
That purrs and dozes,
She is intelligent and wise,
A pussy cat with yellow eyes,
She cannot talk and never tries,
As one supposes----
A pussy cat with yellow eyes
That purrs and dozes.

Tom Robinson.

The Stray Cat.

It`s just an old alley cat
That has followed us all the way home.

It hasn`t a star on it`s forehead,
Or a silky satiny coat.

No proud tiger stripes, no dainty tread
No elegant velvet throat.

It`s a splotchy, blotchy
City cat, not pretty cat,
A rough little tough little bag of old bones.

"Beauty". we shall call you.
"Beauty come on in"

Eve Merriam.

Alley Cat.

A bit of jungle in the street
He goes on velvet toes,
And slinking through the shadows, stalks
Imaginary foes.

Esther Valck Georges.

Cat On The Ledge.

Nonchalant cat
Treading the sill
Importantly fat;

Unflurried where
Dizziness reels
High in the air;

Nonchalant puss,
Picking your way
Quite without fuss.

On the sheer edge
Crazily high
Of the bright ledge;

Choosing your spot
Warm in the sun,
Not caring a jot.

For frenzy and roar
Of traffic below;
You can`t ignore.

Trifles like that,
And doze off to dreams,
Somnolent cat!.

Lydia Pender.

Women And Their Cats.

I never understood Why
Women love Cats
Cats are Independent
They don`t Listen
They don`t come In
When you call
They like to Stay
Out all Night
And when they`re Home
They like to be Left Alone
And Sleep.

In Other Words
Every Quality
That women Hate
In a Man
They Love
In a Cat

WHY IS THAT!

Prayer Of A Stray.

"Prayer Of A Stray"
Dear God please send me somebody who'll care!
I'm tired of running, I'm sick with despair.
My body is aching, it's so racked with pain.
And Dear God I pray as I run in the rain,
"That someone will love me and give me a home.
A warm cozy bed I can call my own
My last owner neglected me and chased me away
To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.
But now God I'm tired and hungry and cold.
And I'm afraid that I'll never grow old.
They've chased me with sticks and hit me with stones
While I run in the streets just looking for bones!
I'm not really bad God, please help if you can.
For I have become just a "VICTIM OF MAN!"
I'm wormy Dear God and I'm ridden with fleas and
All that I want is an owner to please!
If you find one for me God, I'll try to be good
I won't run away and I'll do as I should.
I don't think I'll make it to long on my own,
Cause I'm getting so weak and I'm so all alone.
Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry,
Cause I'm so afraid God, that I'm gonna die!
And I've got so much love and devotion to give,
That I should be given a new chance to live.
So Dear God PLEASE, PLEASE answer my prayer
And send me somebody who WILL really care...

House Cat.

Poem From the Magazine "Yours"

Housecat.

There`s a one-eyed ginger tom cat
Who stalks about the house.
He doesn`t bother birds
And he`d just avoid a mouse.
If neighbours call to visit
And he happens to be there.
he`ll quietly talk throughout our chat
In comfort, from his chair.
he`s a loving little fellow
And he`ll slyly take your lap
And cover you with cat hairs
As you try to take a nap.
He thinks we all should be in bed
No later than 11.
Then he rattles at the bedroom doors
Next morning about seven.
The kitchen fire needs lighting.
He tells us, for his use,
And if we are slow to answer
We get muttered cat abuse.
He`s a horror, and we love him
And really dread the day
When that one-eyed ginger cat of ours
Is gently called away.

The Christmas Cat.

The Christmas Kitten

I once was a cuddly kitten,
But now I am a stray,
'Cause when I was no longer fluffy,
They sent me on my way.

They've kept their big watchdog,
As he can bark and growl,
But I could fly at strangers,
If I caught them on the prowl.

I slink around their garbage can;
I mew outside their door;
But it's clear from their behaviour,
They don't want me anymore.

Now I'm cold and hungry,
And getting very thin,
What have I done to hurt them,
Why won't they let me in?

I crouch in sheds and boxes,
In my bedraggle fur,
So shivery and dejected,
I cannot even purr.

They have another kitten,
Their children's whole delight;
But probably next Christmas,
It will share my wretched plight.
