PRESIDENT 2008
Hello to all bowlers,
I am honoured to be appointed as President of Cleveland County Bowling Association. My club, Thornaby, plays at Littleboy Park and I started my bowling “career” there in 1994. My father was a dedicated sportsman and it was only natural to follow him through football, cricket and now bowls. Because my senior school only played rugby, my footballing days were limited but I was proud to represent my junior school and help win both league and cup in 1958. Cricket was my next passion and spanned 29 years from 14 year old. Tactics has always been an important part of my sport and I quickly discovered that apart from being easier, spin bowling was my forte so I started there. Later playing in the North Yorkshire and South Durham league I developed as a batsman, qualified as a coach and minor counties umpire and captained my side finally retiring in 1990. For a couple of years after that I tried golf but it is very lonely in the ponds and hedges so I took up bowls and discovered the wonderful camaraderie of the game. Surely one of the few competitive sports where you can have a laugh with your opponents!
After spending 31 years working for BT as an engineer and manager I decided to take EVR in 1994 and have no shame in admitting that I am now a “Gentleman of leisure” (Some would dispute the gentleman part). In between all of this I have chaired my parish council and spent time in the “skirts” as a pantomime dame and throughout each and every one of my passions, my greatest passion, my wife Helen has always supported me and does so today as I embark on this latest venture.
So may I wish everyone a healthy happy time on the bowls greens and I look forward to seeing you all.
Brian Lewis
