SKEGNESS 2008 - WE WIN NEWTON

CLEVELAND WIN NEWTON TROPHY

Cleveland County's Newton team won their final encounter against southern representatives Lincolnshire at Skegness. The match was a tight affair with some rinks starting badly and others quickly into their stride. Nigel Routledge (J Walker, S Cole) started well and pulled away from their opponents to win 38 - 16 and John Gillespie's rink (S Meadows, J Livingston) did the same winning 39 - 23. Les Dring (B Lewis, R Williams) was the third winning rink 27 - 25. Cleveland turned a three shot defecit at 20 ends into a four shot lead at 25 with the Gillespie team winning all five ends and hung on to record their second Newton win 166 - 160.
The individual competitions produced mixed results. In the mixed pairs Tom Gilbert and Joan Shaw were unfortunate to lose 15 - 17 in the quarter final but Cleveland were still in action in 9 semi finals. In the 4 bowl singles Jackie Carson had a 21 - 6 victory over her North Cambridgeshire opponent to book a final place alongside Inge Gillespie in the senior singles who won 21 - 11 against Derbyshire and Teresa Parnell who won 21 - 12 over Durham in the 2 bowl singles. The 3 bowl rink of Inge Gillespie, Vi Mitcheson and Beryl Horsfield lost their semi final 23 - 6 against Norfolk and in her under 25 semi, Chelsey Parnell went down to Suffolk after two very good earlier wins. Mens pair Rob Carson and Tony Bowe battled hard against their North Essex opponents but lost 13 - 18 and Sam Oliver who had looked comfortable all week went down to a 6 - 21 defeat against Durham. There were semi final wins for Tom Gilbert who shrugged off his mixed pairs disappointment to record a 21 - 14 win against Norfolk in the Champion of Champion semi and John Walker with the same score over his Northants opponent in the Secretary's singles. In the finals Tom Gilbert couldn't hold Alan Lawton from Jarrow Borough and lost 21 - 5 and John Walker also went down 21 - 8 to Wayne Sterland from Notts. Jackie Carson also failed to win her 4 bowl singles final losing 6 - 21 to J Vinter of Lincolnshire but there was national success for Teresa Parnell and Inge Gillespie. Teresa overcame 11 - 1 down to force a last end shoot out and took the ladies 2 bowl singles 21 - 20 over Jane Croxall from Notts and Inge outbowled Julie Hutchinson from Humberside to take the senior singles 21 - 14.
