County Durham Association of Local Councils

Welcome to the County Durham Association of Local Councils Website. Through these pages we aim to provide members of the Association and the public with as much information as possible about the Association and its activities.

The County Durham Association of Local Councils represents the interests of 22 Parish Meetings and 95 Parish and Town Councils in the County of Durham, the metropolitan districts of Sunderland and Gateshead and the Darlington Borough Council areas. There are currently over 129 Parish and Town Councils/Meetimngs in County Durham, excluding those Councils who are in the Darlington Borough Council Area. This includes the two newly created Councils in Bishop Auckland and Greater Willington which were established in December 2006. The Statutory instrument creating Stanley Town Council was issued in April which, population wise will create the largest Town Council in County Durham. The date of this order stipulates the 1 April 2008 as the creation date for Stanley with elections to be held in May 2008.

The Association aims to provide a quality service to member councils including legal financial, procedural and planning advice.

Training for the Association is provided through a partnership arrangement provided by the North East Region Employer's Organisation (NEREO) which covers the Durham and Cleveland County Associations.

The Association is controlled by an Executive Committee which has members from all District Associations and co-opted members. The President of the Association is Mrs Helen Goodman M.P.
