Chairmanship Training

The County Training Partnership is pleased to be able to announce details of Chairmanship Training.

Parish and town councils play a vital part in representing the interests of the communities they serve and improving the quality of life of local people and the local environment. This is to become more important as a result of the Local Government and Involvement in Public Health Act 2007.

Becoming a councillor can be very rewarding but being Chairman brings with it extra challenges which require training and advice in order to understand your role so that you can carry it out responsibly and effectively. It also involves a lot of hard work. The following modules are designed to support you in your role as Chairman.

This training is designed for current and aspiring Chairmen and Vice Chairmen of Council & Committee. Whether experienced or not, these courses will be useful to all Councillors, helping you to understand the role of the Chairman.

The Chairmanship Training is split into six modules all of which are around two hours duration. Details of the sessions are shown below

1 Chairmanship & Meetings: 19 July 2008
2 Professional Conduct: 2 August 2008
To deliver and develop Chairmanship skills. These courses will be useful for Chairmen with little or no experience and as refresher training for more experienced chairmen.

3 The Public and the Media: 16 August 2008
4 Contentious Issues: 30 August 2008
Provides specialist advice for Chairmen of all abilities and length of appointment. Should appeal to all Chairmen

5 Chairing a Challenging Meeting: 6 September 2008
6 Visionary Leadership: 27 September 2008
These sessions are aimed at experienced chairman to provide advanced chairmanship meeting skills and to develop visionary leadership. Covers the appointment of Clerks etc

Each training session will be restricted to 20 delegates. We hope as many of you as possible can attend and this will be on a first come first served basis. We feel sure you will find it very useful.
