Woolworths Closes Down

The last days of Woolworths Chester-le-Street Branch

The Chester-le-Street branch of Woolworths, finally closed its doors on Christmas Eve and will offically cease trading on 27th December 2008.

In all there will be 12 stores in the region closing according to the administrators "Deloitte" which will include Consett, Durham, Darlington, Newcastle and the Metro Centre branches amongst others.

The administrators confirmed that 200 other stores would close on the 30th December, with a further 200 on 2nd January, and the remainder closing by the end of the same month.

The Woolworths Group was thought to have emplyed between 2500 and 3000 people in the North East and Yorkshire.

Deloitte has said that offers had been received regarding approximately 300 of the stores premises which are often in prime locations, from such well known names as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Iceland, particularly as many of the Woolworths outlets have planning permission for the sale of food.

We wait to see what will happen to the Chester-le-Street branch premises and hope that the staff find new employment soon.

Chester-le-Street Heritage Group provided a display of old photographs for customers to view.
