Circulation Music Projects

Circulation Music Projects is a community focussed subsidiary of the music industry based production company Circulation Recordings. The mission statement of CMP is to work in development of sustainable music-related recording, video production, photography and other creative industry projects to benefit individuals and groups seeking to enter the music and wider creative industries.

Working in partnership with sister company GDR Music, which established the first professional music recording studio facilities in Darlington in 1985, CMP has built on over 25 years of music provision experience in the town, to deliver several community music initiatives designed specifically to widen participation and raise aspirations in various previously excluded social groups.

CMP works with local agencies, colleges and with national contacts to enhance opportunities for inclusion in music development activities.

Virtual Venue TV Show Completes First Series

Virtual Venue, the community music television programme produced by Circulation Recordings, made its debut with a series of fourteen shows between on August 2003 and June 2004 on Sky Digital channel 687, The Open Access Channel.

The live music show, broadcast at 9pm on the first Wednesday of every month featured new original artists from all over the UK and Europe, and was the subject of an article published in The Guardian on 19th June after two pilot shows were broadcast.

Circulation MD Graeme Robinson said, "The aim of the programme is to highlight the quality of brand new artists from all over the UK, through back to back live performances and short interviews. We hope that a community-based, accessible format will appeal to more regional broadcast companies open up their community cable operations to new music."

New artists or bands who would like to appear on future programmes may contact us or leave a message on the board.

Artists filmed for broadcast will receive a promotional copy of their performance on video, in exchange for broadcast clearances.

Circulation sponsors Gala Theatre rock fest

Circulation acted as sponsor for a one day rock festival on August 17th at Durham's Gala Theatre. Featuring Diablo 66, Neo Vega, Disgorged, Crowbar Smile and Fude, the event marked a continuation of Circulation's ongoing efforts to present new original music in high quality production settings, rather than the more traditional small bar venues.
Janice Marthen, theatre manager at Gala, said; "This is a great opportunity for new bands to play in a purpose built venue, with a full size stage and great acoustics."
Circulation' sponsorship includes provision of a professional PA system for the event, which was also filmed for Circulation's Virtual Venue music television programme.
An appreciative audience of around 150 people attended the Sunday afternoon and evening event in Durham City. Gala Theatre are now considering staging similar events at the venue on a regular basis.

Deutscher Punk Fest featured in Music Magazine

Deutscher Punk Fest, which featured six German bands performing at Circulation's studio venue in Darlington in March 2002 made the front cover story in the summer edition of the Generator Newsletter magazine.
A live photo of Headbangin' Indians guitarist Andreas Kiwit fills the front cover of the magazine and the festival is the lead story inside the issue, under the headline; "Punk Fest Makes History".
The show, which marked the 25th anniversary of punk in the UK, was organised by Circulation Recordings working with the Hardenburg Initiative, a German music collective based at Essen university, to set up the music all dayer which was recorded live to DVD in a north east first for this method of recording. Bands Die Doedelsaeke, Linus, Headbangin Indians Down and Out, B-San and Cryptic Flowers performed at the festival show which also featured DVD playbacks of sets by Darlington band Tanzee, and Northumberland band Flatliner, who recorded their contributions in the days leading up to the main live date.
The recording of Cryptic Flowers at the event has resulted in interest from a German television station, who wish to broadcast the film footage of the band's set.

Television Coverage for Iridium

Stockton based rockers Iridium are featured on Tyne Tees Television's Lunchtime News this Tuesday (April 2nd), this follows a story which appeared in The Northern Echo on the band and their success with Circulation's New Deal for Musicians projects. Four of the five group members have been supported through the scheme and have had access to recording facilites, photography and video resources at Circulation's studios. Iridium aso headlined Circulation's stage at Stockton International Festival last year.

Circulation completes second New Deal for Musicians term.

Circulation has completed its second contract term to deliver the government backed music industry training programme New Deal for Musicians in County Durham, Teesside and Sunderland.

Over a five year period of this work, Circulation has assisted the creative devleopment of hundreds of musicians many of whom have established a viable basis for their music industry activity as a result.

The project to deliver Music Open Learning Provision began in 1999 and by 200w has seen bands such as Skeat and Yen gaining coverage at In The City Unsigned, radio play on Radio One and embarking on national tours to promote independent releases with UK-wide distribution.

Darlington bands perform at German music festival.

Six Darlington based bands travelled to Muelheim in Germany to play at an open air festival in June, following the success of the Circulation hosted Deutscher Punk Fest event in March 2002.
Fude, Diablo 66, Principul PSD, Iridium, Fat Mouse and Nemain all made the journey to Mulheim on a tour coach to perform to a large crowd under blazing sunshine at Feldman Park in Darlington's twin town, which was followed by an aftershow party at the AZ club.
The exchange was organised on the Darlington side by Cordelia Robinson working for the community music programme, assisted by Circulation Recordings staff and Jeff Austin, who tour managed all the bands during the event.
It is hoped that te exercise will be repeated in 2003, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the twin town programme between Darlington and Mulheim.

Circulation Stage Returns to Stockton Festival

Circulation presented over 18 hours of live music at the Stockton International Riverside Festival starting on 31st July and continuing over four days until July 3rd.

Acoustic artists, DJs, dub specialists and a camera crew from Virtual Venue, filming the event were all featured on the Circulation Stage in the Moulin Rouge Tent. Artists who performed included Helen Dolby, Martin Hughes, Susie Atherton, DJ Sylk and Dordiseal.

Circulation also programmed music for the festivasl in 2001 and returned to Stockton after a two year break to raise awareness of New Deal for Musicians provision in the Tees Valley during the event.

100% Success Rate For NDfM MOLP in Tees Valley

Circulation Recordings achieved a 100% statistic for successful progression into full time employment by Tees Valley based musicians leaving the New Deal for Musicians Music Open Learning Provision, between April 2002 and March 2003.

National provider statistics published on the Jobcentre Plus website showed that Circulation Recordings was one of the only providers nationally to achieve this progression rate for its clients.

Circulation also achieved a 50% progression for the Durham district in the same period. The national benchmark for progression into jobs from New Deal programmes is 40%.

DJ Workshop for Diversity Day in Darlington

Circulation is presenting a DJ workshop in association with The Racial Equality Council on Saturday 15th May 2004 at The Dolphin Centre, Darlington at 2pm. Guest DJs, interactive sets and lots of beats to check out on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Experience the many vibrant and diverse cultures of our region. See you there! Circulation at NE X NE Music Conference

The north easts first major music conference got underway on Wednesday 12th May 2004 at the ARC in Stockton on Tees. Three days of live music, industry seminars and a keynote event with guest speaker Feargal Sharkey were enjoyed by a diverse audience peppered with industry professionals. Circulation was there and we hope to see you there too at next years event, networking and schmoozing in the industry lounge. Events such as this can give musicians, songwriters, managers etc theirr first go at chatting up A&R people, journalists, other bands' drummers, etc, and can be good practice for larger events like In The City, MIDEM or SXSW.

Music Legend Kim Fowley Links Up With Circulation

Veteran West Coast US Producer and Broadcaster Kim Fowley has established a working link with Circulation, to help develop and promote UK artists and producers interests in the USA.

Fowley, whose songwriting and production credits include KISS, Motley Crue, The Byrds and Helen Reddy, is also a weekend DJ on Sirius Satellite Radio where he regularly plays new music from North American and UK artists.

The transatlantic collaboration has already resulted in interest from a Hollywood based television network in music by north east producers and artists, for inclusion on cable network shows in the US.

Northgate Into Music initiative wins Communities award.

A music programme run by Circulation for The Northgate Community Partnership, has won a Connecting With Communities Award for 'The Project Which Made The Biggest Difference to Communities in Darlington', at the Darlington Partnerships Celebration Event, held in April 2008.

Northgate Into Music aims to involve the community in music making at all levels. Two pilot programmes have taken place so far, the first in November and December 2006 and a further workshop series in March and April 2008, which aimed to provide inclusion for a wide range of users in community based music making.

Activities including songwriting workshops, improvisation and rehearsal sessions, sound recording, computer music, live performance and the development of a rap album by young people working with NIM's music practitioners were attended by participants from a variety of age groups and social backgrounds, with user feedback indicating a need for continued creative activities.

An exclusive playback of the track 'Think Back' was made during the Celebration Event, at which the Duputy Mayor, councillors and community representatives voted for the project which had made the most difference to their community.

Top Producer Drops In..

A Grammy award-winning music producer has praised the latest studio facilities opened by Circulation in Darlington.

Peter Henderson (pictured) who has produced multi-platinum albums and hit singles for Paul McCartney and Wings, Supertramp and Rush, was visiting Circulation Sound, based at Hurworth Grange this week. Peter who was trained by Sir George Martin and beatles recording engineer Geoff Emerick, first worked with Circulation director Graeme Robinson at Air Studios and SARM West in London, when Graeme was working as a session musician in the mid 1980s, before going on to manage artists and establish a recording studio in Darlington.

After viewing the new studio facilities, Peter commented: "The combination of Circulation's studios at Hurworth Grange and Graeme's experience and proven track record in production and artist development offers real opportunities for artists at all levels to turn out 'state of the art' recordings".
