A Brief History of the Hall

There has been a village hall on this site since 1921. The original hall was a former munitions hut purchased from Gretna Green by the Rev'd Robert P. Moorsom, Vicar of All Saints from 1912 to 1943.

The present parish hall was built in 1938 thanks to fundraising by various groups. It was first used as an air raid wardens' post during the Second World War but never had an official opening.

Bridging the Gap Between Church and Community

All Saints Parish Hall has always been a busy place used by a wide variety of groups. These days Aikido, Dance Class, Flower Arrangers' Society, Luncheon Clubs, Mums & Toddlers, Pilates, Slimming World, T'ai Chi, Uniformed Organisations, Weight Watchers and Women's Institute all meet here regularly, as do several church groups.

The hall is also available for hire for private parties, functions and fundraising events by arrangement with the Parish Administrator.

The hall's position close to the church makes it an ideal location for a wedding reception or for refreshments following a funeral. Major refurbishment was carried out in summer 2007 to update the lighting and decor to a high standard. Hire rates are very reasonable compared to other local venues. If you are considering hiring the hall for either of these reasons, please contact Gill, Parish Administrator, who will be pleased to show you round and help you with the arrangements. Thinking of starting a group?

Although the parish hall is well used most weekday evenings, especially in term time, there is some availability for hall bookings during the day and in the school holidays. Whether you're thinking of starting an arts & crafts class, line dancing/tea dancing sessions, a games (scrabble, bridge, whist, etc.) afternoon or keep fit, let us help by providing our excellent facilities at a reasonable rate.

Please contact Gill on 0191 5190515 for further advice.

Hall Refurbishment Fund

Nothing lasts for ever! Not even the good old fashioned electrical wiring of the church hall. So we had to do something about it. When the old wiring failed its annual electrical check in late 2005 a lengthy process of grant applications followed, together with many social events, in an attempt to raise enough money to carry out the essential full re-wiring and electrical upgrade. The Hall Refurbishment Fund was set up in 2006.

Fund-raising is continuing for the refurbishment of the hall. New velvet stage curtains were received in November 2007; side stage curtains and a sound system are still on our wish list! If you are able to support the Fund in any way please contact Gill Helps on 5190515 (Parish Office) or Gordon Coxon (Treasurer to the PCC) on 5366438.

A Hall To Be Proud Of

We would like to thank Awards for All, SITA Trust, Priestman Charitable Trust and All Churches Trust for putting their faith in this project. The grants they provided enabled the re-wiring and electrical upgrade to be carried out to the highest standard. Proceeds from the fund-raising events and many private donations financed the complete redecoration of the main hall, Upper Room and Parish Office.

Many people commented on how much bigger the hall looked once the work was finished. The old brown [window] curtains have since been replaced by tasteful and functional vertical blinds, adding to the feeling of space and light.

The Old School Room

A smaller hall, Cleadon's original school building and formerly the infant school dining room, was handed back to All Saints' in July 2007.

Although some refurbishment is needed it is felt that this space is suitable to hire for meetings and smaller classes or events. The Old School Room has basic kitchen facilities and seats approx. 40 people.

Lying on the A1018 Sunderland to South Shields road, the Old School Room is just a few metres from two local bus stops. Limited parking (max 16 spaces) is available in the car park between the Old School Room and the vicarage (beware the narrow entrance!).

Please contact the Parish Administrator if you are interested in hiring this room.
