19th April 2008 - Spennithorne (Home)
Well first game of the season and it was wet and very cold. Cockerton optimistic that this season we might be challenging for honours given the 5 new players we have. Sticky was skipper for the day and he lost the toss, Spennithorne immediately putting Cockerton into bat. Everything started well, we did not lose a wicket in the first over. Things were to get very bad for Cockerton though, wickets tumbled on regular basis and before you could ask for a downpour, cockerton were struggling to 33 all out. Brian Dale making his 500th appearance, and appeared to be holding his own, however a rush of blood, or was it seeing Sticky come to the wicket? leading to a flash at a loose ball, he's caught behind. Only Peter Raine looked able to bat making a majestic 8 runs. Tea was taken and a good job by Ray was appreciated by all players.
Spennithorne changed batting order to enable the young lads to have a bat and they performed better than Cockerton. Only two wickets falling, both to Sticky, before the 33 was reached. On another sad note Cockerton players missed 6 catch opportunities. Well done Spennithorne, i'm sure a special win. Cockerton Boys are going to have to try much harder otherwise it is going to be a long hard season.

26th April 2008 - Eryholme (Home)
What a difference a week makes. Cockerton won the toss and elected to field. Eryholme Newly promoted and looking to get off to a good start. Potts and Bates opened the bowling for Cockerton and from the start everything very neat and tidy, nothing lose for the bats men to take advantage of. Potts steaming in like a man possessed whilst Bates varying it all the time to tease the bat. Potts eventually getting his man with a snorter, Farrow in the slip taking a magical catch one handed both feet off the floor. Bates not to be out done soon in on the act, again a slip catch which took an eternity to get there, well done Matty, first catch for the club. Eryholme 14 for 2 and things looking good. Potts really steaming in Like the the old Blue Bird steam train and it was not long before he had another, this time Sticky taking a tracer bullet without any problems. Bowling change saw Bates off and introduction of Sticky, left arm round the wicket. With very few runs on the board, wickets were still needed, Sticky not taking long to get in on the act, bowling tight. Potts taking the big hitter out with more spendid bowling and wicket keeper taller takes a good catch diving to his right. Potts eventually ending his spell 13 overs for 26 runs 4 maidens and 4 wickets, great spell. Sticky at the other end bowling with flight and varying spin, batsmen not knowing what to do. Taller behind the stumps performing very well, taking his chances and 2 supper stumpings. The ball of the game, bowling Harker around his legs and taking leg stump. Sticky finished the innings with another bowled, middle stump, which Mr Carroll, umpiring in his retirement failed to see, Sticky finished with 5 for 6 off 7.4 overs. 43 all out on a good wicket. Should be no problem this time round.
Thanks to Malcolm and Ray for another great tea. The sun began to shine and Dade with Farrow opened the innings. With 44 needed Dade was not going to hang around. He fell for only 13 however the momentum was with Cockerton. Farrow playing majestic shots as well as defending well. Matty fell for what was a dubious LBW, again from Mr Carroll making the call. Dicko and Farrow seeing Cockerton home with ease, Farrow splatting a 4 to win the points 22 no ,with Dicko contributing 7 no, Great day for the firsts 20 points.

3rd May 2008 - Ingleton (Away)
Cockerton fielded a strong team and looked to put pressure on Ingleton, however Ingleton won the toss and put Cockerton in first. Dade started in his usual fashion smashing a four in the first over. Sadly Shaun skipper Farrow was not to have a good knock, out for a Hairy duck, thats £1 for the fine book. To be fair Cockerton struggled throughout and only Dicko was able to stamp his authority, looking good for fifty but just falling short on 40. A very important contribution, but would it be enough.
Tea was taken and cockerton keen to get back out ther. Sticky and Potts began the Cockerton bowling and but for two drops by Taller, behind the wicket Ingleton could have been 0-2. Ingleton boys looked a little apprehensive and with some tight bowling the pressure was on. Potts and Sticky soon making breakthrough, with excellent support in the field, Dade two catches as well as Dicko. With Potts tiring it was time to make a change, on came Bates. A slight mix up with P.Mellor and Taller leading to a few words being exchanged, Mellor clearly feeling the heat refusing to walk when Taller appeared to take a good catch off the glove. That would have given Sticky 5 wickets, no to be as the umpire clearly stated to the bowler he could not see if it hit Mellors glove, due to his fat belly?? Sticky had to leave early just as Ingleton appeared to be in big trouble on 67-7. Bates taking a couple of wickets to leave the last 2 still needing to make some run. Unfortunately it was not to be and Cockerton failed in there efforts, Boocock making 22no clinching victory for Ingleton.

8th May 2008 - Eryholme - Cup (Away)
First cup match of the season and the weather dry and warm. Cockerton made to Bat on a rough wicket. Farrow and Dicko open the innings and after a slow start, dodgy bounce, runs soon started to flow, Dicko making it look easy. Farrow doing a holding job and letting Dicko get to work. Farrow eventually falling for 25. Dicko by this time could only watch as wickets fell in quick order. Collins again falling to LBW with only 1 to his name. This being a cup match it was not a case of protecting your wicket and this was shown by a steady stream of wickets for very little runs. Dicko the only person able to make an impression with a great 76. Cockerton finishing 20 overs for 121.
Eryholme set a difficult target and it was not made any easier by some good accurate bowling from Potts and Sticky. At the half way point Eryholme still needed 70 plus runs with Sticky taking two wickets in his fifth and final over.
Bates and Rawlins set the task of finishing off the game and send Cockerton through. Rawlins getting his first two wickets of the season, one of which a great catch on the boundary from an unsighted Dicko. Eryholme falling short by some way. The margin would have been greater but for some woeful fielding from the Potts bloke, i think he was trying it on with his injured foot???

10th May 2008 - Lands (Home)
Cockerton won the toss and decided to bat. Missing two top bats men it was always going to be tough to set a big target, however confidence in the bowlers demonstrated a clear intention by the skipper. Dale and Farrow opening the batting and after 10 overs everything looked steady and a big partnership was being formed. Dale on 22 when the bowler appealed for LBW, (no-one else)the umpire finger goes up. Was this to be a turning point. Collins came in to try and set a score however after two big wings and misses, he eventually edged one. Going like a rocket an inch off the floor, hows that!! a brilliant catch and you just cannot console Collins, his worst start to a season in his cricketing life. No comment further as he is an aussie. Wickets started to tumble at regular interviles, whilst Farrow at the other end stayed calm and watchful. Taller came to the crease with a point to prove to himself,(at £40 a session something had to work) and as bruce forsyth would say "didnt he do well" Taller holding it together after the dimise of Farrow (65). Taller eventually going for 21. Cockerton finishing on 169 for 9 with top gun Sticky on his way out to the crease to bat even though there were no balls left to bowle. Enthusiastic is all i can say.
Lands had baked through the soring heat and although refreshed after a wonderful tea, this was not going to be easy.
They started there innings facing Bates and Potts. Plenty of swing and movement making it very hard to get going. Sticky suggested to Bates a field position move and next ball was caught just as predicted, what a magnificent catch it was by Sticky. Soon after this Farrow took another outstanding catch, just as he did in the Eryholme Game, one handed off the floor. This is how games are won and lost, by now Cockerton in driving seat. Bates eventually finishing his spell with 4 for 18 and Potts finishing 2 for 27. On come Raine and Sticky. Raine not getting his usual opening spell wanted to perform and with this in mind he started his first over very tense. A few wide balls and mixed variation not causing the batsmen to much trouble. Sticky not hitting the spot as he normally would and a few runs conceeded. Raine looked to be in trouble, his run up and action appeared out of sorts and his tally of 12 wides certainly does not look good in the book. Sticky at the other end started to find his mark, the Lands boys appear to have figured out that the cross sweep was a run scorer, i would suggest they had no other shot to play. Raine eventually took a wicket with a good catch to Potts. Sticky then got in on the act bowling another attempted sweep. The extras were pilling up and although the run rate was creeping up, Lands very much still in the game. On came Rawlins for Raine. Sticky trying hard without much help from umpire? LBW claim turned down as he said "the batsman hit it", he did, with his front foot toe end!!! A couple of ,missed stumpings and the pressure building. Sticky bowled another good ball which was swept round for a quick single, however Raine who got no where near 3 stumps when bowling got a direct hit on one, (we are thinking of removing leg and off stumps next time he bowles to see if it helps??? (Joke Peter) Sticky then bowles anoher wicket and Cockerton look on toward victory, Rawlins taken off and replaced by Potts, with immediate effect he dispatched the last man, another good catch on boundary by Dale. Cockerton won by 39 runs and a hard fought victory it was, with excellent team spirit.

Cup - 15th May 2008 - Barningham (Away)
On a sunny but cool night the Cockerton 1st's visited Barningham. 16 x 8 ball overs. Sticky won the toss and elected to bat, thinking setting a target would be easier than chasing on this wicket. Dicko and collins open the innings and Dicko immediately into his stride, smacking a couple of boundaries to get us off to a flier. Matty Collins (Bambi) not so fortunate, bowled for just 1. Farrow arrived a the wicket and off the mark immediately, he made it back to the pavillion in double quick time, getting out to a sloppy shot in his book. Wickets tumbling and runs hard to find, nothing much more to say about the batting, part from Rawlins holding it together playing defensive shots whilst others around him tried to get going. Finally Bates came to the wicket and a quick fire 20+ including 2 massive 6's took us to a challenging 95 for 9, once again Sticky missing out on a big knock, not having to face a ball.
Potts and Bates opened the bowling for Cockerton and kept it tight, pushing the un rate up all the time, every bad ball still hard to play. Bates getting a wicket of the big hitter settled the Cockerton lads, although BAtes was struggling to cope with the everest mountain he had to run down. Skipper brought Sticky on to replace Bates and with immediate effect the runs dried up, just 1 run of his first over. Barningham really struggling now and sticky was not going to let them get on with it. Ball after ball hitting its spot and wickets started to tumble. Potts at the other end having no luck at all, thick edges and drop catches leading to a peacock display of flustrating, if he shouted any louder he would have been heard by NASA. Sticky however kept his cool and with some positive team encouragement he took his chances. Clean bowling the top order with flight, spin and accuracy. With two 8 ball overs left Barningham needed 23, Potts was slogged out of the park and again edged past wicket keeper, with a drop catch included. 16 runs coming off the over and still two wickets needed. Sticky by now buzzing and the team sweating on another good over. A smacked shop went straight to Farrow, however he only managed to let it through for a 4, 3 required from 3 balls. Sticky flights one and again big slog, only this time to Farrow again, sticky cannot watch. My god he held it. 3 from 2 with one wicket to go. The field move in and a dot ball, with one ball to go, bats man only manages to slap it to Dicko who cooly throws to Sticky, Sticky removes the bails and all out with 2 required. What a brilliant game and what a fantastic win for the Cockerton boys. Sticky ending with remarkable figures of 5 overs, 13 runs for 8 wickets.

17th May 2008, Home to Aldbrough St John
On a cool grey day, Cockerton opened the batting, looking to set a target on what should be swinging wicket. Not a great deal to talk about, the highlight being a great Knock by Dade, finishing 87 no. He should have scored a century but the middle order could not get him on strike. Some poor shot selection and untimely defence strokes depriving Dade of his opportunity. Cockerton ending on 159 for 5 from 35 overs.
Aldbrough started well and the opening pair took full advantage of the conditions. Potts bowling well in his spell, Bates alittle expensive. Aldbrough only losing one wicket in the first 19 overs, keeping themselves ready for a charge at the end. Skipper brought himself on and took a couple of wickets, whilst Peter Raine also came into the action. Good to see him take a couple of wickets in a fine spell (2 for 22), would have been considerably better but for some woeful fielding which clearly contributed to the defeat. We lost with only 2 balls to spare. But for negative batting and poor fielding we could have won this game.

20th May 2008 away Witton-le-wear
Sticky won the toss and with a weakened team through players from first team not being available, he chose to bat first. Ian Rawlins and Dicko opened the innings and after a cautious start from Rawlins and a couple of drop catch opportunities, the runs started to come. Rawlins however finding it difficult to get going and he was out for only 8. Dicko and Fenton then put on a partnership taking us past 50, Fendon dropped on 0, finally going on to make 34. Dicko out for 33. Taylor and Mushy out for 0, mushy getting the hairy duck trying to push on from the start. Bates also out for only a couple. Aman and Collins made a stand at the end both finishing on 7 no. 97 the total, not quit enough.
Witton started with aggression and intent. The fall of a wicket to Sticky in his first over did not prevent shots being made. Bates bowling some good stuff although when short, he was easy to play. Sticky not having much luck today, shots in the air between fielders and thick edges. A dubious LBW decision not going down well with the Witton boys, Aiden however sure he was right, another to Sticky.Sticky heartened by comments from Mushy, "your great, hitting the spot every time mate" Soon after a run out following mix up at batting end, Sticky removing the bails following good work from Taylor behind the stumps. Bates was changed and on comes I.Rawlins, first ball a full bunger, hit for 6. Rawlins did however keep some pressure on with a bowled wicket final ball of his first over. Witton clearly in a hurry and some poor fielding allowed for runs being given away. Rawlins took another wicket in his next over to keep our hopes alive. Not to last long though! Sticky getting smashed for 4 and 6 in consecutive balls to bring it to an end. Lost with 4 overs to spare. A game to forget for all concerned. Two balls lost!!

A Division cup -V-Rockcliffe
A welcome return for this game by Mally Leafe, did he know what he was letting himself in for. Cockerton Batting first and only managed to score 78 from 20 0vers. Mally the only person to show any form with a knock of 30 Not out. Once again Cockerton showed how to NOT BAT.
Rockcliffe wasted no time in knocking the runs off for no loss, D.Wheeler making 45 NO assisted by J. Edwards 27 NO. |
League game 24-May 2008 Rockcliffe park
Rockcliffe batting first. Potts getting a wicket in his first over and again in his second. On a good batting track Cockerton had the ideal start and it would only get better for POTTs, he was well supported by some great catching from his team mates. With runs hard to come by the approach from Wheeler was to try and hit POTTS out of the attack. It nearly worked however one strike to many and a big six was hit in Sticky direction. With speed and majestic approach, leaping 6 feet off the floor Sticky took a catch only his mates could dream of. Wheeler walked in total disbelief that such a catch was possible. Potts now has his 5 and looking for more. Sticky brough into the attack replacing Bates who tried without any luck. With good supporting fielding from everyone and bowling line and length Rockcliffe were struggling, they eventually finished all out from only 36 overs 141. Potts finishing with 7 for 59 from 18, excellent effort, its true this man can play? Sticky returned 3 for 32 from 11.
Cockerton off to a flyer, Dade playing shots as if his misses wanted him home early. Lethbridge opened with ihm and looked very comfortable however this was short lived falling for only 11 runs, good to see him playing for his long standing club. Farrow came to the wicket and immediately off the mark with a 4. Cockerton looked in very strong position and with 95 on the board the fall of Dade did not appear to be of concern. I will keep this brief, we crumbled to 132 all out, Farrow last to fall on 31, flustration got the better of him although Sticky disappointed he did not get a better chance to shine. He did hit a brilliant boundary to finish 4 NO.
This has to go down as one of the worst middle order batting collapses for many years, however having seen this happen all season, you could say it was expected. The boys really do need to look at themselves and start playing with confidence rather than complacency.

31-May 2008 home to Middleton-in -Teesdale League
Middleton in teesdale came in positive mood. On a batting track this was not going to be easy. Middleton batting first and runs started to flow easily, although Cockerton bowling was not bad. Middleton lost wicket in 9th over PottsHaving his man caught by Fenton. Bates also getting in on the act C+ Bowled. Bowling change brought Sticky on and Kyle Mellor on his debut for the club. Sticky striking immediately having Middletons captain caught by Mellor. Then removing another LBW in his next over. Middleton 85 for 5 once Mellor took his first wicket for the club, caught by Potts. Sticky however bowling to left hander with only short boundary and inept fielding?? smashed out of the park for 26 in his 4th over, finishing 2 for 46 from 4. Get your coat young man.Lethbridge and Raine brought into the attack and it was lethbridge who took the honours removing 4 wickets for 40 from 8, supported by Raine 1 for 60 from 9. A bad day all round although if they can do it so can we????
Cockerton started the reply with lethbridge and Dale. Lethbridge however not lasting long, out for 0. Farrow again in to try and stop the rot, and for a while things looked good. Dale although very old and past his best stilled looked the part, 22 was as good as he could muster before being caught. Rawlins in and although clearly playing in his owne defensive style, not really getting going another short innings for 10 runs caught thanks to a lazy shot. Fenton in and after early promise he again showed his ability in getting out when he gets in. Out for 16 stumped from what must be the worst flighted spinner he will ever face. Potts given a chance up the order and he failed to take it, out for a DUCK, 50 pence please?? Talla to the wicket and after listerning to some heavy music on his headphones, was he ready for this. Talla was looking mean and keen. He and Farrow shared a good partnership and soon after Farrow got 50 he also got himself out, sloppy shot brilliantly caught of the toe end. This was not going to be Our day. Talla went on to strike the ball with ease and looked in command. With Sticky coming to the wicket and Talla unaware he was on 49, he played a loose shot back to the bowler. I did not want to tell him he was only needing 1 for his maiden 50 for the club. How wrong was i as he claimed he would have prefered to have known. Never mind plenty of other games to play. Cockerton reaching 182 all out, 68 run loss.

Tudhoe CUP Game
Cockerton Batting first. Dale and Farrow trying to get the team off to a good start, however Tudhoe had other ideas taking Farrow caught for only 5 runs. Dale tinkering for singles, leaving the strike to others. Talla came and went also for 5 runs. In came the Widdall, fireworks and hes off to a flyer Dale falls for 11 another caught and wicket given away. Rawlings in and out for only 3, to the wicket arrives Dickie Cowan, Widdall departs for a smart 20 and Cockerton struggling to put a good total on the board. Aman came to the wicket and hits a couple of boundaries, one of which was a massive six. Out for 11, here comes the Boy Potts. Strides to the wicket with purpose. He gets off the mark and saves himself 50p with a tentertive shot for a single. thankfully Dickie and Potts appeared to know what they were doing today and a partnership developed which gave Cockerton at least a fighting chance, finishing on 113 for 6. Potts 26 NO and Dickie 25 NO.
Tudhoe started with a boundary in the first over and appeared to want to get on with it. Potts and Sticky kept it tight in the first half of the 20 overs. Talla taking a good stumping off Sticky to keep the pressure on. Both Potts and Sticky taking 2 wickets each in the first 12 overs. Tudhoe needed a big hitter if they were to get out of this with a result. Potts returned 8 overs for 22 and 2 wickets, Sticky 8 overs 41 for 3, third wicket another stumping by Talla. Rawlings and Mahant both bowled 2 overs each, both getting vital wicket each and finishing the game with a win for Cockerton by 16 runs. |
5th June 2008, Aldbrough St John AWAY cup.
Cockerton again batting first and after a good start by Dale 10 and Farrow 28 cockerton batting looked somewhat inept. Only Potts the main man could do anything to help the total with 22 not out. He looked good, comfortable and never in trouble. (If only we could all be like him)??
Cockerton finished on a lowly 75 all out including 4 ducks, one hairy by Sticky.
Aldbrough wasted no time in getting stuck into the chase, they lost only 3 wickets although they only had 7 balls to spare. Potts and Mahant taking the wickets, with a run out the other.
Not a bad effort from the lads although more runs would have given us a better chance. |
Middleton St George League.
Sticky won the toss and elected to field. Middleton started slowly with some tight bowling. The effort took its toll on Potts, after taking the opening wicket, he pulled up with what appeared to be a side strain. (We must remember to tell the sniper not to shoot our men) Potts retired to the slip area out of the way. Bates took over and did not fair well, being hit to the boundary at will. Sticky holding up the other end trying to stop the flow. Sticky struck in his 6th over bowling Ayub for only 4. The Rodgers brothers settled into the game and boundaries were easily picked up. Bates removed from the attack and replaced by Farrow.Sticky got P.Rodgers thanks to speed of hands by Talla, another great stumping. Farrow on and having an immediate effect taking 3 wickets in his first 2 overs supported well by Sticky Middleton looked on for well over 200 finished on 132. sticky returning impressive figures of 17 overs 7 maidens 6 for 48. Farrow 6 overs 2 maidens 3 for 5. A great fught back and Cockerton have a chance of victory.
Tea was taken and it must be said a great tea was had by all. Well done Middleton tea Ladies.
Cockerton got off to the worst possible start in there efforts to turn over the low score of middleton. Dicko out for only 1 soon follwoed by Farrow also for 1. Dade power hitting not coming off today, out for only 15 of which 12 were from boundaries. Mushy given his chance at number 4 and to be honest he looked like the only person able to Bat on this wicket. Massive middle order collapse with 3 ducks by Potts, Talla and Mellor. Aman came to the wicket and proceeded to hit one of the biggest 6 of the season so far. He soon left for only 10. Mushy just playing around with singles and good defence.Another duck saw Dicky walk with his head down. Bates soon followed for only 6. Sticky produced a majestic flick of his hips for 4 before Mushy thought he make two, getting himself run out for 14. Another woeful effort by the batsmen allowing Middleton to run out easy winners by 76 runs.

Murrough Wilson cup V Inglton
Cockerton batting first and a slow start made by the openers, two wickets fell early Dicko for 7 and Dale for 3. Farrow looking comfortable whilst assisted by Talla. Talla falling for 14 to his mate Mellor then the big middle order collapse. Fenton out for a duck, Potts for 4 Aman for 3 Dickie 3 and Bates 4. Farrow falling for a good 38. With only 88 to defend Cockerton will have to bowle well supported by there fielders.
Inglton Got off to a flyer with Potts not bowling his best. Clearly the snipper who got him at Middleton was back, after the one over he was splattered on the wicket in agony. Is this the end of his season?? we hope not. Please get well soon Potts!! Farrow bowling like a demon with speed and venum, whilst the nimble Sticky started well as a replacement for the injured Potts. Inglton could not get going and Farrow took a wicket in his 4th over. The game was very tight and wickets were needed. Batey came to the wicket and played his usual left hand sweep shot, we conclude he does not play any other shot. Fielding change enabled Aman to get his hands on a difficult catch, Batey played into our hands as they say, out for 28. Aiden took another good catch to remove G. Sowerby and Cockerton on top. Farrow bowled the final over with Inglton needing 7 to draw and 8 to win. A great (fast) over prevented this and Cockerton win by 4 runs. Farrow returning 10 0vers 4 for 34. |
Trimdon away, league 14th June 2008
Cockerton batting first. Dade and Dale got the boys of the a fyler. Dale however falling for only 7. Farrow to the wicket and again not to be his day, falling for only 6. Dade enjoying himself with plenty of big shots. On a friendly wicket it was not to last, Dade eventually falling for a respectable 39. S.Lethbridge now called upon to hold the middle together and build a score. He was not supported by the middle order with Mushy falling cheaply for only 5 Talla for a duck alongside Rawlings. P. Raine returns and what a good return it turned out to be. He and Lefty pushed the score onto a respectable 147, lefty finishing NO 34 whilst Raine 37. Raine clearly on a mission today, he played his innings with style and power, if only he could play every week. Some shot selecting out of the tiger woods book of class. We must try and tell him this is cricket not golf. Lethbridge his usual solid self. Holding onto one end and keeping us afloat, without these two today we would have been in serious trouble.
Tea taken and the heavens opened. Slight delay however no one appeared to be in a hurry anyway.
Trimdon started slowly, Farrow and Lethbridge keeping the runs tight. Some sloppy fielding did allow Trimdon to keep some momentum. Aman being guilty of allowing an easy catch to be dropped as well as losing a car at work. Enough said!! ask Aman what happened. Farrow getting the break through bowling the opener with speed and accuracy. Farrow then getting another with a good catch by Raine. A change in bowling brought Sticky to the wicket. He was not to have a good day, called for two wides in his first two balls, when he contested this he was told clearly by the umpire "I saw you lot Umpire" as if to imply we cheated. (Small minded cheating dimwit) Sticky only lasting 6 overs conceeding 35, Rawlings and Raine into the attack. Raine making an instant impact, getting hit for 7 off his first over. This was only a blip as Raine started to rain down some great bowling. At one stage from a position of total command, Trimdon started to worry. Raine eventually sending down 7 overs for only 24 runs and clean bowling all 5 of his wickets, during which we also took 2 run outs. Rawlings also getting in on the act having Craggs caught majestically one handed by Farrow. With the final ball of the game Trimdon needed 1 run to win and thanks to good bowling, speedy fielding from Farrow and Sticky we got our man. Trimdon all out 147 match drawn. Great effort and comeback by Cockerton. 16 points well earned.

Trimdon home Cup 16th June 2008
A lovely night, bright sun shine and Cockerton entertain Trimdon following Saturdays league game draw. Trimdon lost the toss and Sticky elected to bat first. Dicko and Rawlings opened and a positive start was made. Quick singles and fine shot play from Dicko getting Cockerton going, Rawlings first to depart, clean bowled by one that kept low. Farrow to the wicket and needing to get his season going. Dicko took the game by the scruff of the neck and smashed the young opener all round the park for a quick fire 39 before he also fell having been bowled. By this time Cockerton were 62 and there had only been 10 overs, it looked good for a score today. Widdall to the crease, then back to the pavillion for 0 as was Dale, was this going to be another massive middle order collapse, Farrow had other ideas and before you could say bombs away, Farrow was smashing 6's around. 8 6's in total with 7 4's, his power and timing was to be admired, the trees were shaking in fear, he just hit over the top of them. Shaun should be proud of his abilty and we should never question this mans skill in batting, he puts flintoff to shame shaun eventually fell on 93 however by this time cockerton were 174, finishing on 191 with 17 coming from the last over. This was not going to be easy to beat.
Trimdon came out as they should, trying to smash the ball to the boundary. Although Potts was the man to be hit going for 24 in his first 3 overs, he did get a wicket. Farrow at the other end bowling fast and straight. Potts claimed another wicket from his 5 overs at a cost of 37, could have been tighter but we still had enough help him out. Rawlings and Bates changed and Rawlings mde a break through in his first over and another in his second, Trimdon by now starting to find the target too much, Bates also in on the act taking a wicket in his 3rd over. Fenton playing well in the field, getting a great run out throwing to the wrong end and having the opener out by yards, great stuff. This cannot be said for Potts who on two occasions demonstrated his ability as a dancer rather than fielder, the attempt to do the splits whilst letting the ball go through his legs was a picture, only to be enjoyed and laughed at. Come on Potts try and take it seriously. Sticky brought on to finish the overs from one end and with his first ball he got a wicket clean bowled, great spin and flight.
The game closed with Trimdon falling 70 runs short, Sticky ending with 4 for 7.
Well done everyone, although the middle order again failed to shine Farrow and Dicko efforts were enough this time. Some tight bowling also made it appear comfortable.

Tuesday 24th June Home Cup V Aldbrough St John
Cockerton lost the toss and were made to field. Aldbrough immediately into the swing of it under the dark clouds and spits of rain. Mathias must really like Cockerton as he went for it from the off. Some big hitting to the short boundary enabled him to score freely. The bowling was not great but on another day could easily have got wickets. Aldbrough eventually making a very respectable 187 from the 16 x 8 ball overs. Mathias not out 121. The highlight of the fielding was a boundary line throw from Farrow which hit the wickets for a run out. Rawlings the only bowler to get a wicket, taking Mathias opening partner.
Cockerton reply was poor, all out for just over 100 runs, some dubious umpiring decisions and very bad light certainly not helping the Cockerton cause.
It must be said that the Cockerton general play was not what you would normally expect. It was quiet, we made mistakes and heads dropped. We must try harder and work together as a team. |
26thJune 2008 Home to Barton Cup
Not a good evening to remember, Barton the visitors and Cockerton batted first. The only person able to get hold of the Barton bowlers was I. Rawlings scoring 36 from Cockertons total of only 81 for 5. Barton soon got into the swing and knocked off the runs with no loss of wickets. An easy win and another cup exit for Cockerton. |
Barton Home 28th June 2008 League
Barton the visitors again this time in the League. Barton batted first and got off to a great start, scoring runs freely. Potts and Lethbridge opened the bowling without much luck. Potts finally getting his man in his 9th over. Bowling change brough on Rawlings and he got a wicket in his 5th over. J.Bell for BArton scored a tidy 56. Bates brought on for Rawlings and in his 2 overs he took 1 wicket. With a run out on the card Cocketon at least got 2 points, lets see how they can bat. Barton finished 156 for 4.
Cockerton bats men just did not turn up for this one, unfortunately being bowled out for a small total of 72, only Fenton and Bates reaching double figures. Very poor performance all round.

Cup -v- Witton Le Wear.
Cockerton batting first on a flat wicket, Dicko and Tala open the batting. Dicko soon into the swing of it but not as quickly as Tal, Tala's first two scoring shots hit for 6. He did not stay long but hit 17 in very quick time. Dicko then partnered Farrow and the fireworks started. Farrow over taking Dicko in runs scored finally going for a magical 77, bowled playing one big shot to may. In comes the golfer, Peter Raine and he was also soon into the swing. He scored 21 NO whilst Dicko stayed and helped with a classy 63 NO. 187 not going to be easy on this occassion.
Witton started well and although behind the run rate wickets were not falling. Peter Raine the start man with the ball, taking 3 for 31. W.Nelson the big player tonight with 66 before he was caught by RAwlings of Sticky. Extras the next highest scorer with 27, in a total of 157 for 7. Cockerton through with ease. |
19th July 2008 Ingleton at home League.
Ingleton put into bat and lost a quick wicket to G.Percival on his return to Cockerton. That was it however as the rain clouds burst and the wicket was under water, Game called off with Ingleton 12 for 1. |
East Cowton CUP 21st July 2008
East Cowton the visitors and on a fine night they were put inot bat first. They started as they went on losing a wicket in the first over to Potts and losing wickets frequently thereafter. Farrow in on the act taking 3 for 13 from 6, they just could not handle his speed. Sticky brought on second change and contributed 2 wickets for 14. Rawlings no wickets from his 4 overs. East Cowton setting a small total of 73 for 6 from 20 0vers, a tidy bowling performance.
It was to take only 12 overs for the Cockerton boys to knock off the total. Farrow contributing only 17 before a lazy and thoughtless shot got him caught. Thanks to Dicko we were able to meet our target, his contribution of 41 NO supported by Tala 5 NO doing the Job. Into the next round here we come. |
26th July Lands away League
On a day when once again the Cockerton firsts were under strength and a number of players were brought in, this was going to be a struggle. Cockerton won the toss and elected to put Lands into bat. It was probably the hottest day of the season so far but points from bowling were what we wanted, so see how we go. Potts opened the bowling and a maiden started us off on the right foot, Sticky opened at the other end and with his first ball got a wicket, caught Foster on his return to the team, great start with another maiden. Potts bowling hard and straight but not getting much luck. Sticky plodding on and getting abit out of the wicket but the ball just not going to hand. After 10 over spell Potts taken out of the attack and replaced by Bates. Potts not happy and expressed himself through violence towards his drink bottle. Great spell though, none for 35 a good effort but wickets were needed. Bates soon into the swing and a couple of wickets after 3 over demonstrating the change was a good one, Sticky contributing also with another through some fine wicket keeping by Tala. The opener Bredenkamp stumped for 54. Although some of Cockertons fielding was poor to say the least, we did manage to take some good catches, foster contributing 2, Tala 2, Dicky and Fenton 1 each. Only 3 bowlers used, although Rawlings was chomping at the bit to have a go, he was not happy when told he would not be bowling today Unfortunately whilst in the field in the very next over Rawlings sustained a hamstring injury and therefore would not able to contribute a great deal more to the game. Lands eventually finishing on 175 for 9, Sticky 5 for 87 from 20, Bates 4 for 50 from 10, very unluck with 2 drops in his last over, no names mentioned. Potts 0 for 34 from 10.
Cockerton got off to the worst possible start with Dade and Tala and Fenton going early, Dade for 13 and Tala a duck and Fenton only 2. Mushy and Aussie Collins now had to dig deep. Collins certainly did dig deep, in fact he stayed for over 20 overs for his highest Cockerton score of 27, if he had dug any deeper he would have been back in australia. Mushy contributing 20 very well played runs, our only other contribution came from Potts who got us 14, Rawlings did not need a runner for his pulled hamstring, he got out for a duck but seemed to try to run the injury off, thats what we like, fighting spirit. Cockerton all out for only 103. 5 points for a poor performance.

Rockcliffe Park away Cup game
On another lovely evening Cockerton were invited to bat first, sadly Dade and Farrow were to be dismissed early ,Dade 9 and Farrow 4. Dicko hanging around for 33 valuable runs. The only other notable contribution was Rawlings with 23NO Cockerton finishing on 102 for 6 from 22 overs.
Rockcliffe Were never in trouble as the Cockerton bowling was smashed around the park. Rockcliffe not losing a wicket and strolling home after only 17 overs. |
Aldbrough St John away League 2nd August 2008
Cockerton again under strength for a league game. We won the toss and elected to bat on what can be a good wicket. Dade opened in his usual style, smashing the ball to the boundary for 4's. The loss of Lazer and Aussie Collins put the brakes on for a while and mushy stayed to help Dade smash his way to 53 before he was bowled. A great knock and just what we needed. Mushy joined by Tala and they both were able to contribute 17 each. Not much more to rave about and Cockerton finished with only 130 on the board.
Aldbrough were not going to let this game slip and Potts was the only bowler to make any impression taking 3 for 42 from 13 overs, once again Cockerton showed how not to field and how to drop catches. A very poor performance and a game to forget. Well done to M Priestly with 42 quick fire runs NO for Aldbrough.

Barningham away,Hammond cup semi final 5th August 2008
Raining heavy in Darlington so this gamme was not expected to be on, however we travelled to Barningham on the understanding it was OK. On arrival it was wet and raining. Game on, if its not going to stop then we might as well get on with the game. Sticky won the toss and put Barningham in. Potts and Bates opened the bowling and Barningham got off to a solid start, howevr with 34 on the board Potts strikes and Cockerton are into the home team. Cockerton were up for this and the fielding was great, good pick ups and excellent throwing. Potts on fire tonight, he eventually claimed 5 for 44 whiles he was very well supported by Bates at the other end. The moment of the match so far was seeing the Barningham run out. Yes! No! Yes! No! if they had gone from the off they might have got 2. Barningham finished on 89 for 9 with 2 run outs to the Cockerton boys. Not an easy target with the weather getting worse and darker.
Dade and Dicko however having no problem smashing the ball to all parts, Dicko the first man out bowled for 30 and Cockerton well on there way, Tala came in and has to take the credit for running out Dade, Dade not happy after setting himself to see it through, out for 35. Tala did go on to make 11 and see us through. 90 for 2 and a cup final to Win. Come on the boys. |
Middleton-in-Teesdale Away League 16th August 2008
Cockerton travelled to Middleton-in-Teesdale with a weakened team, only 6 regular first team player and non of those were front line batsmen. Sticky won the toss and elected to field. Richy Gill and Sticky opened the bowling and we should have had early wickets, the opening pair could easily have gone in the first couple of over off Sticky. Gill bowled very well and kept everything tight, some of the fielding was poor to say the least. Dropped catches and wandering fielders not helping. Not a good return for Blacky, he was responsible for 2 drops and his fielding left alot to be desired. Well done Aiden Reid, taking 2 good catches for Sticky. Richy Gill taken off at the drinks break and Blacky brought on for his first bowl in 2 years. Not a bad return although no wickets to show for his efforts. Aussie Collins brought on to see what he can do and what a great change from the skipper, Collins taking 4 wickets in 2 overs for only 8 runs. A Brilliant catch by Sticky helping his figures. Tala certainly played his part and took 2 stumpings as well as a smart catch. Sticky finally ending with 5 for 71 from 18 over. Target 147.
Tea taken and we wished we had taken longer. The Cockerton batting minus our better batsmen and it showed. Lazer, mushy,Blacky, Fenton and Collins all out with only 14 runs on the board, its a bad sign when sticky pads up and you have 30 overs left. Tala and Richy Gill now have to stick in and get us out of this mess, Tala letting the opposition know he can smash it whilst Gill tickled the ball around with style. Tala eventually falling into the trap, 3 men on the straight boundary for the big slog. He was unlucky the ball went straight down the fielders throat. Dicky only stayed around to add 8 and Foster contributed a duck. Sticky went in and managed to hang around for Gill to take us past 100 and a point. Gill eventually out for a very good 43 whilst Sticky finished 13 NO, Aiden sadly could only muster 1 before the innings was over 112 all out. Great performance under the circumstances and a significantly weakened first team.

Middleton st George Home League 23rd August 2008
Cockerton welcome Middleton who are sitting at the top of the league. On a wet wicket and short boundary it is obvious Middleton want to play and get 20 points. Cockerton batting first and struggling, Lefty did not score for almost 9 overs whilst Dicko came and went for only 9. Lefty finally out for only 3. Farrow has his work cut out today. He was joined by Blacky and sadly left by Blacky having got a duck. Was this to be another almight collapse, well you could say it was interesting. To put it into words no other player scored double figures yet Farrow (Skipper for the day) scored 121 not out from a total of 176 with the next highest score coming in extras 22 for the loss of 8 wickets. Farrow hitting 13 x 6 and 3 x 4. What a knock and at least it has given us a fighting chance.
Middleton still confident and you sense a little cocky, Lefty was not having any of it though, he took the first 2 wickets and Potts joined him. Sticky helping out with two fine catches both for Potts. Middleton struggling to get into the Cockerton attack and but for a fine knock of 49 by M.Ayub things could have been over alot sooner. Sticky brought into the attack for Potts and after a tidy spell got his rewards with 2 wickets for 29, Potts finished with 2 for 53 and lethbridge 5 for 63. A great team effort, particularly from Farrow getting Cockerton 20 points for the first league win in months.

Hammond Cup Final. 24th August 2008
Cockerton-V-Barton. On a glorious day and fantastic wicket Cockerton set about setting a target. Early wickets were to fall and after 11 overs things were looking bad, we were 15 for 4 with only 11 overs to push on. Were we worried, yes was the answer. Farrow the only person who looked like he can score with Aussie Collins who had only passed double figures once previously this season. Farrow with his skill and power decided to push on and Collins followed. Both batsmen smashing the ball to all parts, even the fish and chip shop. Collins played out of his skin and this was rewarded with a magnificent 50, whilst Farrow carried on as he has been for the past few games, never looking like he would get out he final finished 84 NO. Cockerton finished 151 for 5. This was not going to be easy to chase down although we knew if anyone can it is Barton.
Barton started confidently and were always with the run rate, Bates and potts started the bowling however Bates taken off after just 2 expensive overs. Sticky brought in to try and slow the run rate down. Potts not having much luck and on this ground you must take your chances. Sticky struck the first blow for Cockerton, having already had a drop on the boundary by Bates, it was Farrow who took this one, just what the doctor ordered. Soon after Dicky took another great catch of Sticky and Barton were rattled. Potts then got 2 quick fire wickets, both Fenton and Sticky taking good catches, what a great team effort so far. BArton alittle panic struck and a good run out and another fine catch this time by Blacky of Potts and Cockerton looked like they were going to do it. The opener Clark was still the threat and he reached his 50 in good fashion. The final over came down to who could hold it together, Sticky bowling with 11 runs to defend, his first delivery went for 4 and the pressure mounted, what next, Sticky has his man caught by Dade, cool under pressure and the batsmen crossed. Clark then played a dot and a single to leave Fairy to make 6 from 2 deliveries, it did not happen two further dot balls and Cockerton had won the cup. What a fantastic game and advert for Cricket. Well done Barton for giving it a real go. |
M.Wilson Cup Game at home to Barton 26th August 2008
Barton came to Cockerton seeking revenge whilst also wanting to progress to another Cup Final. Cockerton batting first and not off to the best start with Dicko going for a duck. Dade and Farrow started to fire and with a couple of boundaries each including a 6 things looked a little better. This did not last long and both Dade and Farrow went with scores of 20 and 18 respectively.Tala and Blacky tried to steady the ship, Tala contributing 15 whilst Blacky getting his highest score forthe club this season 25. Cockerton tail did not wag tonight and we finished on 102 from 18 overs for 8.
Barton batting and lost an early wicket to Sticky. Barton boys then dug in and scored as required for the run rate. Potts not having any luck tonight and he was replaced with Aussie Collins. Collins had an immediate effect taking Murray for 23, caught by Dicky on the boundary. Sticky by this time was being hit and clearly seen as the bowler to score off, Collins however kept it tight with some full bungers and swingers, he went on to take 3 for 11 of 3.4 overs good effort, sadly Cockerton total was about 20 runs short of realistic to defend. Cockerton out and only League points to play for now. Well done Barton and good luck in the final. |
Trimdon at home League 30th August 2008
Cockerton entertained Trimdon on a very pleasant day, sun shining and wicket looking good. Cockerton lost the toss and were put into bat, with the skipper not arriving till 3pm we had to try and set a solid platform. As usual Cockerton went on to show how to make the skipper sweat, we lost 3 wickets quickly, Dicko for another DUCK, Blacky for only 2 and Collins for 4, Sticky was thinking of padding up when suddenly the Skipper arrived. Hurry Skip and pad up was the cry, dont worry said the coky fella, as he lit a fag and sat watching the game. Tala and Mushy looked good and suddenly an LBW appeal Mushy gone for only 6, his parents were not impressed with that decision. Fenton joined Tala. Tala smashing the ball to all parts for a quick fire 26, then another LBW appeal, this time Dave Carroll (umpire) finger up and Tala gone, "no way" tala cries! "it hit me on the thigh" "up there", Tala walks disgusted at the decision. In strode the Farrow, Skipper who was averageing 200 + in the last 3 games, what could he do today. A slow start, single's taken and a momentum building, Fenton only dropped 4 times in his inning's 3 to the same fielder, Farrow then decided the time was right, smash! bang! wallop! and farrow was well on his way. Trimdon bowler Strong was bowling slower and slower farrow hitting harder and harder. Strong eventually being hit for 68 runs of his last 7 overs and Farrow ending on 98 being caught. Great performance from Farrow and very well supported by Fenton not out 43. Cockerton 198 for the loss of 6 wickets.
Trimdon came out all guns blazing and after the first 6 overs they were well on course with the run rate, Peter Raine finding it hard going with numerous wides, he did strike first and a good take by collins at slip, well in went into his belly and then rebounded into his hands. First wicket down for 37. Sticky replaced Raine whilst Potts who once again bowled well for no reward was replaced by Collins. Collins again proving he can do somethings right taking a wicket in his first over. Trimdon knuckled down and started to play well, taking it steady but not really pushing the score along quickly, Collins eating away at the Trimdon batsmen, as he finally ended with 5 for 29 from 7, Dicko and Dicky both taking catches for him. Sticky not having much luck apart from the fact Trimdon only knew how to try and slog him getting the odd boundary and missing the ball more often than not. Sticky did get his rewards however, taking the last 4 wickets in one over and finishing with 4 for 45 from 9. Mushy took his first Cockerton First team catch whilst Potts showed how to take a bullet, catching a snorter. Cockerton eventually running out comfortable winners by 67 runs with 13 overs to spare. The last 6 Trimdon wicket fell for only 6 runs from 12 deliveries. Well done boys and Cockerton are safe for another season.

Barton away League 13th September 2008
Final game of the season and Barton must play and score at least 5 points to win the Title for the second year running.
Although it was wet from all the rain over the past few weeks and a down pour friday night, the two skippers agreed the game goes ahead, a time delay meaning the game could not start till 2.30pm to allow the pitch that little extra time, with a shortened boundary and reduced overs everyone keen to get going. Barton boys must take credit for getting a wicket ready, lots of effort gone into this.
Cockerton won the toss and put Barton in, Barton showed there intent from the off. Sticky and Potts started the bowling however Potts soon taken out of the attack. Collins brought into the attack and took wickets straight away. An LBW and a bowled, whilst Sticky also getting in on the act bowling Kearney after been sent over the boundary for a couple of 6's. Cockerton were still in the game although Barton were pushing hard for a big score. Sticky tried to keep it tight whilst at the other end Collins was taking a battering, finishing with 2 wickets for 69 from 7 overs. Mushy brought into the attack and he was dispatched to the boundary from his first 4 balls, all very good balls though, everyone pitched and bounced, unfortunately, pitched short and bounced kindly for the batsman. Mushy rested and on came Farrow, this was not a good move as he was dispatched out of the ground for 4x6, Barton at this point full of confidence. Farrow off after his one over and on came Dade, slightly better from his, only dispatched to the boundary a couple of times, all along the floor!! Barton finishing with 213 for 5, Sticky finished 3 for 71 from 13, Dicko taking a stumping within in this effort.
The sun was out and Barton were pleased with the effort so far, they had won the title before Cockerton went out to bat, Ingleton game cancelled due to water logged pitch.
Bates and Fenton opened the batting and both got off to quick starts with a boundary each however that was in as they were both dismissed in quick fashion. Mushy had a day to forget, he strode to the wicket with some intent and this was a big opportunity for him, first ball Hairy duck was not what he wanted in front of his parents. Mushy looked to the square leg umpire for assistance indicating it was a no ball, Sticky pointed out the ball bounced and therefore a good ball, he trod off like his world had collapsed. Potts and Dickie now had a chance to shine and it was the old war horse who stuck around, playing some good defensive shots whilst Potts soon found himself back in the pav getting changed. Dade went in and scored 25 with a couple of 6's included. He was replaced by Dicko who contributed 19 before he was also dismissed. Farrow failed to shine today, he batted like he bowled? Badly.
Collins/Raine and sticky still to bat, Raine did not trouble the Barton lads, only getting a few whilst Collins contributed 7 before he was lastman out, Sticky NO 0 again, this fella can hang around. Barton had comprehensively beaten Cockerton and deserved to win the league title over all. At least Cockerton can claim some credit it enabling this to happen as well as stating we beat the league champions in the Hammond cup final. Lets hope for a better season next year and better weather. We lost 6 league games to the weather in total.
