Rod's ready for Romania... almost
A CHARITY is back on the road, thanks to big-hearted college bosses.
Rod Jones, the founder of Convoy Aid was stranded when a wheel came off his trailer.
With his £200 four-by-four also broken, the 58-year-old could not collect aid supplies from across the UK.
The Askham Bryan Centre, in Guisborough, east Cleveland, came to his rescue when it donated a trailer.
It was discovered when college workers were having a clear-out.
Centre manager Tracey Hart said: "It was basically sitting there doing nothing. We were known as an agriculture college and this trailer was something students built years ago and was pulled by one of the tractors.
"We are really pleased the trailer can go to a worthwhile cause."
Mr Jones said: "It's an answer to a prayer and just the right size.''
Unemployed Mr Jones has taken out a £3,000 loan to buy a van to replace his vehicle, which he repeatedly took on the 5,000-mile round trip between Teesside and Romania.
Mr Jones, who has run aid missions to Romania for 16 years, said: "I can't afford £3,000, but I have to afford it.
"I don't smoke, I don't go to nightclubs, but it brings me a lot of pleasure to do this work and I get a lot of satisfaction from doing it.'
"You can't expect a £200 vehicle to do that round-trip continually. Hopefully, we will get some mileage out of the new one.''
