The Old Cordwainers Hall
 | | The site of the ancient Cordwainers Hall on Hungate is being investigated as part of an excavation by the York Archaeological Trust. It is illustrated in a map dating from the early 18th century. |
|
"Horrendous Find"
 | | During the course of the dig, various artefacts have been discovered one of the most striking being this corbel found upside down and re-used in the foundations of the Hall. Dr.Peter Connelly, of the York Archaeological Trust believes it to date from the late 13th to mid 14th century. Dr. Connelly said “What is very clear is that whoever constructed the stone foundations for the Cordwainers Guildhall treated the object with no more intrinsic value than the other non-carved stones re-used in the foundations. Therefore, The Cordwainers themselves never used the object and it would have not been visible as part of the guildhall.” |
