SOME OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIRST YEAR

Library & Leisure Department - Alteration to lift to make upper floor of the Library accessible. Advised on the design of the Mobile library to meet the requirements of the disabled. Led to modifications to Kirkleathem Old Hall Museum. Inspection of Hotels and Leisure facilities offering access for the disabled.
Engineer's Department - Liasing regarding dropped kerbs to preserve smooth wheelchair routes to Redcar town centre. Ongoing pressure re - disabled parking.
Property Department - Have automatic doors fitted to new offices. Alterations to disabled toilets in Town Hall and an ongoing plan to alter public toilets. Arrangements being made to fit alarms to public disabled toilets. Pressure regarding housing premises access.
Transport - Regular contact to Dial a Ride Scheme. Contact with Bus services for better access.
Best Value Committees - Representation by member on Housing modification and Occupational Therapy assessments re - equipment.
Care in the Community - Advising on disabled issues.
Public Protection Department - Advised on access for disabled to local office.
Redcar & Cleveland Vouluntary Development Agency - Members on the committee.
Private Companies - Arriva Buses, pressure on routing of new buses. Supermarkets, contacts with some of the main stores re - access to store and goods. Railways, improvements made to access at East Halt Station. Petrol Filling Stations, the Jet station has agreed that in the mornings assistance will be provided for filling and minor services [tyre check] for disabled drivers. Safeway offers the same help for filling.
