The Morris Ring
The Morris Ring came into being in 1934. Few of the old, traditional sides remained active but growing numbers of new revival` teams were emerged during the 1920’s. The Cambridge Morris Men invited five other groups to join them in the forming of a national organization of men‘s dance teams.
As a member club of the Morris Ring we usually journey, two or three times each year, to dance at events in other parts of the country.
Sometimes these are small, friendly events hosted by a brother side and involving three or four other groups.
Five or six times a year the Ring holds major meetings at which a dozen or more groups gather together and carry out tours of dance across county-wide areas.
Since 1934 yearly meetings have taken place at Thaxted, in Essex, usually throughout the week-end following Spring Bank Holiday. Other Ring meetings are organized, in different areas, each year, by member sides of the Ring.
On the surface, the Ring is still the same simple organization set up in 1934; Ring meetings are outward displays of its effectiveness. In the background however, the Ring, through the efforts of its members, aims to research, maintain and preserve not only the Dance itself but also traditions associated with the Dance.
The whole organization, led by a Squire, Bagman and Treasurer, now has nearly four hundred member and associate clubs, each retaining its own character and independence.
