Keep Durham on Ice Campaign
The Keep Durham on Ice Campaign was initiated following the news that Durham Ice Rink was to close. The group was set up from the remains of the Durham City Wasps Supporters Club who joined forces with the Rink's Ice Skating Club and parents of the Durham Junior Hockey teams. |
The Death of Durham
 | The closure of Durham Ice Rink, one of the great bastions of British ice hockey for over half a century, shell-shocked Durham City Wasps fans in 1995.
Faced with a £250,000 bill to repair the deteriorating building and skating surface, the management opted to close down the rink. The decision meant the scrapping of the City Wasps ice hockey team and the city's famed junior development programme. |

Durham City Council say...
On the issue of a new ice rink for the city, Colin Shearsmith, Chief Executive of Durham City Council issued the following statement in April 1999.
"The City Council would support the principle of a new Ice Rink for Durham City subject to the facility being provided and run by the commercial sector. In this connection, the Council is prepared to offer any advice or reasonable assistance in kind to help realise the aim."
