A welcome to Escombe Saxon Church

Escombe is situated three miles west of Bishop Auckland in the Wear Valley. The church was built around 675AD with stone from the Roman Fort at Binchester. It was originally thought that the church was an offshoot of one of the local monasteries eg Whitby or Hartlepool but a recent meeting with a local archaeologist has given us another perspective.

The church is one of five parishes grouped with Etherley, Hamsterley, Witton Park and Witton-le-Wear .

The church wardens are
Mr. David Appleton (01388 609777)and
Mr. Derek Jago (01388 458358)
