For many years, a group of Americans have visited Weardale annually, extracting mineral specimens which are sold all over the world to mineral collectors. They post a daily diary of all their happenings, well worth having a read at. Use the link to follow their exploits in 2004 and to see the beautiful rock crystals they find. It's no wonder that Weardale has been designated an area of outstanding geological interest.
For those that want to find their own bits of crystal, the best place to go is the Bollihope Burn. This is the old mineral workings on the road from Frosterley to Middleton in Teesdale. Look in the shallow waters of the burn for the tiny bits of purple fluospar and white quartz. |
