Gravestones North East

The aim of this site is to photograph and transcribe as many gravestones as possible in cemeteries across the North East of England.

For many years I have been fascinated in gravestones and the information they contain. Over the years I have become increasingly dismayed at the neglect of our cemeteries so I felt that it was time to gather as many images of the remaining gravestones as possible before they are lost forever.

Photographing and transcibing the Gravestones is very time consuming so to make the task more attainable I only transcribe for people born pre 1900.

How to use the database

The information and images are intended to aid people with their family history. Please ask if you intend to put images on Family Tree websites.


The database is organised in alphabetical order and arranged as follows.

Surname Bloggs
Forenames Fred
Died 1870
Aged 56
Birth 1824
Image 499

If you find a match for the person you are looking for then you can email me via the Mail Form from the contents section and I will send an image of the Gravestone.

Email should cotain the following information

The cemetery name ie Gateshead East
The Surname ie Bloggs
The Image number ie 499

Please be aware that all the images are high resolution and as such are large files 2mb+
If a name is not in the database then it means one of the following.
There is no headstone
The headstone is unreadable ie weather worn or laid face down
The headstone has not been transcribed yet

I don't plot positions of headstones and as such would have no idea where the headstone would be in any particular cemetery. In time I will try to provide links to where this information can be obtained.
