Admissions Policy

Hackforth and Hornby is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. It is co-educational and pupils are aged from 4 to 11 years. Children are admitted at the beginning of the Autumn Term in the academic year in which they become 5.

We invite our prospective Foundation Stage pupils and their parents to visit us during the Summer Term before they join the school in September and to take part in our Sports Day. Foundation Stage pupils then attend school part time, usually, for the first two weeks of the autumn term.

Admission Limit
Our admission limit for the academic year 2009/10 will be 7 pupils per year group.

Catchment Area
Our catchment area includes the villages of Hackforth and Hornby. We welcome pupils from outside our catchment area.

Absences

The absence figures for 2008-2009 are as follows and are based on attendance at each ½ day session:

Total % of absences = 4.24%
Total of authorised absences = 422
Total % of unauthorised absences = 0

The 1944 Education Act permits a child to be taken out of school for a maximum of two weeks extra to the scheduled school holidays in each academic year, at the discretion of the Headteacher. If you wish to remove your child from the school day, please make an appointment to discuss this with the Headteacher. We ask parents to record their children’s absences on a form which is available from the school office.
Absences may be recorded as unauthorised if school does not receive this form or an alternative written explanation of the child’s absence

Teachers are not required to provide holiday work, although we would encourage you to keep a scrapbook or diary with your child as a way of
recording the holiday.

Please contact us at 8.50 am to inform us of any unexpected absences.

School Uniform

We welcome your support in maintaining high standards through the wearing of school uniform.

Our uniform is:
• Blue sweatshirt with school logo, available from the school office.
• Blue or white polo shirt, or similar.
• Grey trousers, skirt or shorts.
• Blue and white checked or striped dresses in the summer.
• Appropriate footwear. We advise that pupils require footwear which will support them during active playtimes.

For PE lessons we prefer pupils to wear:
• training shoes
• plain shorts
• plain tee-shirt

For swimming lessons , Richmond Pool prefers pupils to wear:
• a one piece swimming costume (girls)
• trunks, not swimming shorts (boys)

Please help us to help your children look after their clothing by clearly marking their name on all articles of uniform and PE clothing.

Jewellery
Jewellery, including watches, should not be worn at school. Children with pierced ears must wear plain studs or sleepers and always remove them for PE and swimming. Members of staff are not allowed to remove studs or sleepers.

Home School Contract

We ask parents to support the work of the school and our expectations for behaviour through signing a Home School Contract with their child and returning it into school. Please contact the Headteacher if you would like to discuss any aspect of the contract with her.

Instrumental Music Tuition

Specialist teachers from the County Music Service offer lessons in a range of instruments. Several of our pupils are currently studying string instruments. At Grade 1, pupils are given the opportunity to join the service’s Saturday Music Centre in Northallerton.

A charge is made for County Music Service Tuition. If you would like further details, please contact the office.

Health Issues

Medicine
If your child requires regular, prescribed medication for the control of chronic conditions such as asthma and epilepsy, please contact the Headteacher to arrange long term care.

Please ask your GP to prescribe antibiotics, or other medicines, which can be administered three times a day. Medicine can then be taken at home. This advice has been passed to school by the NYCC Education Service (Safety Risk Management Unit).

Health Care
We ask parents to provide health information about their child when starting school and ask them to update this information when necessary.

If your child becomes ill during the school day or has a serious accident, we will contact you or a nominated adult. Therefore, we ask for a current contact number where you can be reached. Please inform the school office if this number changes.

Minor cuts, grazing and bruising are treated in school by staff with First Aid Training. All accidents are recorded in the School Accident Book. Parents are asked to complete a form agreeing to treatment if we consider it necessary, and the use of plasters and ointment. External advice will always be requested when we consider it necessary.

Personal Accident Insurance Cover
The LEA insures against injury caused to children as a result of negligence by the Authority, its servants or agents.

Child Protection

Hackforth and Hornby Church of England Primary School is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all children in school. All North Yorkshire schools, including Hackforth and Hornby Church of England Primary School, follow the North Yorkshire Area Child Protection procedures and the Children and Young People's Service procedures. The school will, in most circumstances, endeavour to discuss all concerns with parents about their child/ren. However, there may be exceptional circumstances when the school will discuss concerns with Social Care and/or the Police without parental knowledge (in accordance with Child Protection procedures). The school will, of course, always aim to maintain a positive relationship with all parents.

The following websites give more information concerning child welfare:

Voluntary Contributions for Activities

We invite voluntary contributions for all school trips and to help with payment for external curriculum providers who come into school. You will receive details of these contributions in advance of the trip or activity.

No child will be excluded from activities or outings if the contribution cannot be made.
However, if a significant number of contributions are not received, the activity may be cancelled.

School Meals

School Meal Service
We are extremely fortunate to have our own kitchen on site. Mrs Sandell, our experienced cook, provides nutritious and well-balanced meals. Meals are eaten in a family atmosphere with older children assisting our experienced midday supervisors. Please give two weeks written notice if you wish your child to start school meals or change to packed lunches.

School meals cost £2.00 per day (Siblings are charged £1.80). You are informed, in advance, of any changes to this charge.

Children may bring healthy packed lunches to school if you prefer.

Morning Snack
Children may bring a portion of fruit to school to eat at morning playtime.

Water
Pupils have their own named water bottles in school.

Collection of Money

Dinner Money
Dinner money is payable in advance on Mondays. Please send money into school in a sealed envelope indicating your child’s name and the amount enclosed.
Please contact the school office if you would prefer to receive monthly, half termly or termly bills for dinner money.

Cheques for dinner money should be made payable to NYCC Hackforth & Hornby CE Primary School. Thank you.

Other cash or cheque payments, including voluntary contributions, should also be sent into the school office in a sealed envelope, indicating your child’s name, the activity and the amount enclosed. Cheques to school should be made payable to Hackforth & Hornby CE Primary School. Thank you.

Key Stage 2/3 Transfer

Our school is in the catchment area for Bedale High School and we enjoy close links with this secondary school. However, pupils also transfer to other secondary schools in the area.
