Harrys' Happy Haraoke...£400 for Baringo

Tickets sold like hot cakes for our last venture, and, as is now usual for a big Haraoke Night, it rained cats & dogs!
However, the monsoons outside did not dampen the spirits of the hundred-or-so guests inside, who were treated to an evening of music, dancing and games from the Haraoke Band. Have you ever tried an egg & spoon race with the spoon in your mouth?
We also had another visit from our friend Val Towler, who does a magnificent one-woman pantomime - think of the Reduced Shakespeare Company even further reduced, and you're on the right lines! This time we were treated to an unusual version of Snow White and the Seven Jockeys, sorry - Dwarves.

The buffet was provided by our good friends Marrany and Pat, from Darlington Gaelic Society, whom we must thank again for providing such a marvellous spread. It really is a shame that we can't always do it justice, although we try our best! Thanks again, ladies.

As you know, the evening was to raise funds for the Half Way House in Baringo (see "A Grand Christmas Party" for more details), and this we did admirably - the final total was just short of £400. Well done every-one, and thankyou so much for helping this wonderful cause.

Music, Fun and Food - £200 raised...

... for the Disabled Access Fund at Northgate URC.

A large crowd of familiar faces met at All Saints Millennium Centre in Darlington to enjoy an evening of musical entertainment, fun and food to raise some more cash for the planned wheelchair lifts at Northgate URC.

The Haraoke Band, with new member, Dot, making her vocal debut, kicked off the proceedings at 7.30 with a few of the tried and tested numbers that have been in the band's repertoire for longer than they care to remember. Some more recent additions, in the form a some hot blues, followed, along with a giant game of Pass The Parcel. No, not a giant parcel, but three parcels on the go at once, round all the guests, not just a select few juniors. Dot made her debut with the band, singing "Georgy Girl", to the delight of the audience. More dancing followed, and then a buffet with wine.

Part two commenced with some jazz standards, and then Dot, making her second appearance of the evening, with "Jambalaya" and "Downtown". We could almost (but not quite) hear the guests singing along - must do better next time. Musical Knees provided excellent entertainment for adults and children alike (if you've never played musical knees you haven't lived) and was won by our esteemed Communigate Editor, Andrew Hutton, taking part with his young son Jonathon. A Strip The Willow followed, then more jazz to finish the evening.

All in all, a couple of hundred pounds was raised to swell the coffers of the Disabled Access Fund - not a bad effort for a small group of folks.

Special congratulations go to Dot, who made a stunning singing debut with the band, and huge thanks to Brian, for standing in at short notice for Andy the Sound Tech who was unavailable for the first part of the evening.
