Despair

She knows he's there
stalking her
hidden in shadows
never quite visible
a brief flutter
in the corner
of her eye

Patient
unblinking
constant companion,
yearning for her
to turn to him
alone

Some days
the facade crumbles
resolve falters
She can no longer stop
his approach.
She softly slips
into his grasp,
slides
into his world

There is no
gleam of satisfaction
in his eye
to celebrate
his victory;
He offers her
a thick, black blanket
that shuts out
the pain

His touch
shrinks her inside herself
until she is
but a brittle husk
numbly enfolded
in his cold arms

The trick is
to break free
before
the silence
becomes
home

Each time
it is harder
to find her way back
from his clinging darkness
to the raw, painful light
of dawn

Each time
it becomes easier
to let go
as she slides,
oh fateful drop,
into his night

Someday
she knows
she won't find her way back
and will lose all
in his quiet
depths

But,
for now,
they dance.
