Weeks 1 to 8 2006 season

THIS WEEK'S CUP MATCHES:-

1st XI lost to Barningham in the Fenwick cup - details hopefully to follow

The Eggleston cup dream continues with a fantastic victory over yet another A division side, Cockerton:-

Stand in Captain Michael Lunn won the toss and elected to field. Some really tight bowling early on put the visitors on the back foot with only 42 runs coming off the first 11 overs, Lunny took both wickets to fall including the danger man Dave Lee to finish with 2-21 from his 6 overs, Keith's 6 overs also only conceded 21 runs. A few dropped catches allowed Cockerton to get a respectable 103-3 with the third wicket being a direct hit run out by Shanny (Never run on a misfield)

Haughton started off well with Danny again looking aggressive getting off the mark with a beautiful six, he was out for 18 and despite a mini colapse Keith weighed in with 14, it was left to Tom the big Hitter Smith, 25 off 13 balls including 17 off one over and Neil finishing with 31 not out including 1 six and four fours saw the team home with 3 overs to spare.

A great all round performance which was capped off with Geoff finding the lost ball in the undergrowth at Cow Corner. The next round as an away game against Barningham. A big thank you to the many supporters to came and watched the game

Week 8

1st XI match report:-
Haughton first XI verses Brompton-on-Swale.

With a slightly stronger first team due to the game been played on a Sunday, Haughton were up against the league leaders on an exceptionally hot day and played brilliantly in extreme conditions.

Haughton 152 for 3:

After been put into bat for the first time this season the batsmen came into their own after a slow start with some great displays. Gary McGuire - 26 which included 3 fours and one well timed six. Sam Bainbridge top scored with an great half century of 55 which included
numerous fours and Neil Wilkinson scored a fairly quick 46 NOT OUT with five fours to his name and just missed out on his 50 as Warren Spark kept hogging the strike.

Brompton-on-Swale 132 all out:

Another superb fielding and bowling performance from the first team ensured a great win over the league leaders. Michael Lunn's first spell was awesome as he bowled six overs with two
maidens with two wickets for a great start. Colin Wilkinson was at his usual best and returned with figures of 9 overs, 1 maiden and two wickets for 23. Steven Richardson got one wicket after Dave Souter took a great jumping/stretching catch but got taken off early because he was rubbish. Dave Edwards got excellent figures of 4 overs, 3 wickets for 9 as he and Colin kept it tight and finished the Brompton attack off. Also Dave and Warren took one catch each and Sam took two catches to round
off an accomplished performance.

2nd XI report:-

2nds away against raby castle.

On a scorching hot day Tony won the toss and for the first time this season elected to bat. Things looked bright at the start with Danny and Keith getting 18 runs off the first over, wickets fell steadily with only Keith staying around with the top order (though he did run out Dave), he finished top scorer with 33, Danny scored 15, Steven 18 and Martin 14, Tony helped the tail to reach a respectable 121 all out with Martin's Dad adding what proved to be a valuable 20 runs for the last wicket and securing a 2nd batting point in the process before he was the last man out for 16.

After an excellent Tea (thank you to the Tea ladies) Raby came out to bat and started off in confident fashion, Keith managed to take 2 wickets in an over but it all proved to be in vain with the host running out comfortable winners by 8 wickets.

A better performance by the 2nds, hopefully a few key players will be available soon and performances will start to improve.

Under 15's beat Catterick, apparently quite easily - sorry no details available

THIS WEEK'S CUP MATCH - 1ST XI HOME TO INGLETON ON MONDAY NIGHT IN THE EGGLESTONE CUP -

........... what a match!!!

Ingleton batted first and were restricted to 101 for 7 wickets by some good, accurate bowling from Neil, Craig, Lunny and Gary [4 for 25]. Some good catching also helped out.

Danny and Jeff opened up the batting and Danny [42] scored very quickly and batted very aggressively. The opening partnership provided a sound base to move onto greater things. Both openers were given out LBW, and this allowed Gary and Neil [23 not out] the opportuinty to show their batting skills to the crowd [!!]. It came down to us wanting one run to tie with three balls left. Gary missed out with the first two, but managed a single off the last ball to ensure a great victory because we lost fewer wickets than our A division opponents. A great victory by many of the HCC youngsters - well captained by Tom

THANKS TO STEVE FOR GETTING THE EAST COWTON MATCH REPORT TO ME FROM WEEK 3 - A GREAT GAME!

Week 7

1st XI back to winning ways - a 3 wicket win over Spennymoor - I'm looking forward to Steve's report because I have heard he took 6 wickets!!

HERE IT IS, FROM OUR ACE REPORTER:-

Spennymoor verses Haughton first XI

Spennymoor batted first and scored 120 all out.
After an indifferent first bowling spell from the team it took C Wilkinson to ignite the Haughton fielding performance with a direct throw for a run out and the first wicket.
S Richardson came on to bowl and took a career best of 6 for 48 with some excellent swing bowling not to mention the intentional full tosses, leg bowling and short deliveries which always keep the batsmen on their toes.
C Wilkinson used his full portfolio of deliveries to bamboozle and confuse the batsmen and finished with 2 for 27 but still cannot work out how S Richardson got more wickets!
M Bestford had an excellent day in the field working extremely hard to stop many runs and took one catch.
T Smith took two catches behind (one shouldn't of counted but he did catch it), stopped most of S Richardson's wayward leg balls and tried to stump the batsmen every time the ball carried through.
N Wilkinson also took a catch and K McCarthy dived for a fine catch to round off S Richardson's sixth wicket.

Haughton 124 for 7.

An excellent team effort to reach the target with all players reaching double figures. K McCarthy top scored with 26 until Sam ran him out.
G McGuire - 14, M Bestford - 16, S Bainbridge - 20, C Wilkinson - 20 and N Wilkinson - 16 ensured the team were back to its winning ways.
Colin and Neil lost their wickets close to the end but T Smith steered the team home with 5 not out, the winning runs coming from a neat four clipped off his legs.

2nd XI lost by 98 runs to a strong Lands 2nd XI - we did well by taking 6 wickets, although a couple of early dropped catches proved very costly. Danny got 3 wickets, Norman got 2 and Craig manged one wicket. The batsmen struggled against some fast and accurate bowling and were bowled out for 69 runs - the Lands opening bowler bowled right through the innings!!

Under 15's beat Darlington - no details available - if you want the report on the web site - PLEASE send me the info.!!

Week 7

Both teams involved in League cup action this week - both teams lost - no details to report

Week 6

1st XI report from the new reporter Steve Richardson - thanks Steve - great stuff

Haughton first XI verses Middleton in Teesdale.

Middleton in Teesdale - 100 for 9
An excellent fielding performance by Haughton restricting the visitors to 100.
Some unorthodox but effective bowling from S Richardson with figures of 12 overs 3 for 34 including a crucial break through from his first delivery.
N Wilkinson chipped in with 2 for 26 and C Wilkinson 1 for 9 with some very tight bowling.
M Lunn had 1 for 17 and two catches to his name.
Tom Smith kept wicket with one good stumping and kept moral high with his constant shouting.
M Bestford had a direct throw for a run out to cap off a great fielding performance.

Haughton - 62 all out.
An abysmal batting performance from nearly the whole team with only a couple of bright moments from C Wilkinson with 12, G McGuire with 10 and Lewis Mann scored 8 not out in the last stand of the day with S Richardson (who still cannot play safety shots) with 6.

2nd XI report

2nd's against Catterick, Catterick scored 158-7 from their 35 overs with Martin being the pick of the bowlers bowling 17 overs and taking 3-51, Craig and Shanny also took a wicket each and good fielding also accounted for 2 runouts. The batting never really got going, with only Ashley, Martin and Shanny getting double figures, finally all out for 58 and loosing by 99 runs.

Under 15s

Richmond Under 15's 79- 5, all the bowlers took wickets with the pick of the bowlers being Danny who took 2-23 from his 5 overs, in reply the Under 15's recovered from being 2-8 to finish with 33 all out with Ryan Ford scoring 22, therefore a defeat by 46 runs.

Week 6 - cup match
2nd XI away to Catterick Village in the Frank Howell cup

The team got off to a good start with Gary and Danny adding 37 for the 1st wicket, the innings fell away a bit after that, Gary scored 24, Dave 19 and Craig hit a couple of useful boundaries at the end of the innings, The innings closed with the score 84-6 and it was felt this total was about 30 runs short. Craig again bowled well and conceded just 15 runs off his 5 overs, he also took the only wicket to fall, in the end Catterick knocked off the runs in the 16th over, despite this defeat the team performed well and have the chance to avenge defeat on Saturday in the league.

Week 6 - Under 15 cup match

The Under 15's played darlington in the cup on Tuesday and came away with another victory, the bowlers again bowled well, containing Darlington to 51, the runs were knocked off with the loss of 2 wickets with Jack Binks the batting star with 26 not out.

Week 5 - for the second week running, both matches rained off - 2 points to each side

Under 15 league match - Under 15's played on Friday night against Barton, restricted them to 45-6 with all the bowlers doing well and taking wickets, Brownie and Danny knocked off the runs easily to win by 10 wickets and to record the Under 15's 3rd success of the season and maintain their 100% start.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SEND ME THE OTHER UNDER 15 RESULTS?

Mid week cup match

Fenwick Cup 1st Round Witton Le Wear Away

The 1st team continued their unbeaten start to the season with a very disciplined bowling performance against A Division Witton le Wear . They were bowled out for 63 in the 20th over. All the bowlers chipped in with Keith taking 3-13, Colin 3-17, Lunny 2-11 and and Neil 1-16.

After a stuttering start the runs were knocked of in the last over, Colin scoring 30 and useful runs coming from Gary and Neil. Dave and Neil steadied the ship after a slight middle order panic to knock off the remaining 10 runs with 5 balls to spare a victory by 4 wickets.

Week 4 - both matches rained off - 2 points to each side

Week 3

HERE IT IS - THE BELATED MATCH REPORT

Haughton first XI verses East Cowton.

With an average age of 24 the Haughton first team came of age with what will be the most exciting match of the season.

East Cowton batted first and scored 138 all out.

With a brilliant fielding performance holding onto all of their catches bar one difficult one the young team ensured a reasonable target to chase.
S Richardson was the star with the ball claiming a career best with 5 for 45 with what was described as some of the worst bowling ever seen. With the unpredictability of each ball the batsmen were totally confused and with the one cracking ball per over which they weren't expecting the batsmen were out classed.
S Bainbridge caught two behind for Steve.
Colin and Neil Wilkinson got one wicket apiece with some tight bowling and G McGuire got a couple of tail enders and finished on 2 for 15.

Haughton 139 for 9.

A collapse of the opening order with only S Bainbridge - 14 with any credit had Haughton for 40 for 5 at one point until the Farther and Son partnership of Colin and Neil Wilkinson steadied the ship. Neil was eventually out for 20 but helped Colin onto 57 not out. It was down to Colin and the tail enders to try and win the game which at one point was not achievable. M Lunn helped the cause with some great drives, one for 4 and one caused the comedy moment of the match as two East Cowton players desperately trying to save the match ran into each other fielding the ball and let another two runs through, but the most was down to Colin.
With two overs to go and no wickets remaining Haughton needed 7 to win. At the crease with Colin was 14 year old Jack Binks on for his first team batting debut.
Colin was on strike. On the second ball he danced down the wicket and cracked an enormous six to the delight of the crowd but from the further four balls couldn't get the winning run.
It was down to Jack to score the winning run. The East Cowton players crowded in close to intimidate the young lad, the first two balls were defended brilliantly and the third was stroked away between two fielders on the off side for the winning run, the crowd erupted and game was won. (And I think Jack's Dad was very proud)

No details for the first XI against East Cowton -but I have heard that they won an exciting match by 1 wicket with three balls to go - HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE CONFIRMED AND SOME DETAILS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO ME FOR PUBLISHING

HCC 2nd XI away to Barningham 2nd XI -

The seconds delivered their best performance of the season but despite solid batting, fielding and bowling lost by 6 runs.

Barningham scored 171 all out with Craig taking 3-32, Martin 2-50 and Norman 5-29. Mention also to Brownie who bowled really well for his 5 over for 12. Martin took a spectacular one handed catch and Dave performed very well behind the stumps taking a catch and a stumping, no dropped catches from anyone either.

Batting in the drizzle a solid start with Ashley scoring a quick fire 35, and Danny a patient 32. Brownie scored 28 and Jeff contributed a useful 15 (we only had 10 fielders so roped him in to bat), some meaty blows from Dave, 2 huge sixes and 23 not out wasnt quite enough to take the team over the ropes.

2nd XI notes by Dave the "News Hound"

Week 2
HCC 1sts restricted Dales to 137 for 8 wickets, with with Keith taking 3 wickets and Michael Lunn getting 2. We knocked off the runs for the loss of 2 wickets, the runs coming from Garry [64 n.o.] with Colin and Keith both getting good runs. The good start to the season continues with maximum points taken so far.

HCC 2nds - Aldbrough St John 2nds scored nearly 200 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, Craig taking 5 wickets and Martin 3 wickets. HCC struggled against a strong 2-man bowling attack and were all out for 38 runs. However, on the positive side we picked up our first four points of the season. [thanks for the info. Dave]

Week 1

1st XI bowled Heighington 2nds out for 122, with Colin taking 3 wickets and Michael Lunn chipping in with 4 for "not very many". Haughton batted solidy with Colin and Sam batting well. The runs were knocked off for the loss of 5 wickets. A good solid 20 points to start off the season.

2nd XI were bowled out for 52 runs and King James soon knocked off the runs for the loss of only one wicket - sorry no details sent to me, so I cannot elaborate on the 2nd team.

Weeks 9 to 16 - 2006 season

Week 16 - 1st XI lost by two wickets to Trimdon C & DH - no report - sorry!!. 2nds lost an exciting match to Cockerton - Dave's report to follow [thanks again Dave]

Haughton 2nds against Cockerton 2nds.

In what can only be described as an incident packed , an experienced Cockerton just managed to scrape to victory thanks to a six off the penultimate ball of the match.

Tony won the toss and elected to bat, for the first time this season (and the last I think) both captains agreed to play a 40 over match. Last seasons opening partnership Richie and Ashley got off to a flying start with both batsmen looking in good touch until Ritchie got one that bounced high onto his thigh and was given, somewhat surprisingly out LBW when the score had reached 56, Richie scoring 18. Danny came in at three determined to end his recent poor form and did just that with 2 fine boundaries in the first over he faced just backward of square. Ashley reached his 50 in fine style with a 4,6,4 combination but the red mist came over him when he had reached 51 and was clean bowled when the score was 86, another good knock from Ash with 8 fours and 1 maximum. Adam came in at 4 (elevated up the order after his performance last week) but couldnt really repeat his batting performance and was out for 6. Dave then came to the crease, also looking to end a disappointing few weeks with the bat. They looked in total control and had soon added a 50 partnership to get the score up towards the 150 mark. danny hit Dave Lee for 2 fine sixes to move onto 26 before he was deceived by a quicker delivery when Cockerton did a double bowling change. Dave carried on the fight and added to big sixes behind square, unfortunately Martin was in-patient at the wicket and was bowled playing across the line without scoring. Dave then got one that nipped back off the seam to be clean bowled for a league season best 37. Tony and Peter then batted superbly, both putting away the bad ball and soon got the score beyond the 200 mark with some meaty blows but their partnership was ended when Tony was looking for a quick single and ran himself out for a season best 32. Peter carried on the fight and ended the innings when he too was run out off the last ball for a fine innings of 30 including 2 fours and 2 sixes. the innings ended on a very good total of 229-9.

A superb Tea was served and in my opinion just pipped Raby Castle as the best tea provided by an away team this season, but still not as good as Albert's Teas for the Second Team this season.

Cockerton came out to bat and both Martin and Shanny bowled reasonably tight to start off the innings. Their openers then got to work on Shanny and Tony was forced to make his first bowling change. Adam Weatherburn came on and eventually broke the partnership, a feathered inside edge straight into Daves gloves when the score had reached 85, next delivery and an inside edge onto the stumps accounted for the 2nd wicket, Game on! Cockerton's batsmen where now 2 seasoned first teamers and the experience showed until Martin finally caught the opening batsmen on the back foot and got a plumb LBW decision and when Adam W clean bowled Dave Lee when the score was 110 it all looked good for a victory. Unfortunately the game changed and Haughton's limited bowling was exposed when Martin had to leave for a prior engagement after 25 overs to leave a threadbare bowling attack and only 10 fielders on a small ground, Danny bowled tightly and on another day could of picked up a few wickets after finding the edge a few times but with age restrictions on the young bowling attack Tony was forced to get the WD40 out and oil his joints with an over of spin, we will not dwell too much on his 9 ball over but it brought the 2 Adams on again to bowl in tandom and they both picked up wickets, with Dave getting a brilliant stumping off an offside wide to a left handed batsman and both bowlers getting a batsmen clean bowled. It was getting close now with Cockerton still needing over 6 an over to win, they scampered singles, had the odd heave and were given far too many extra runs with wide deliveries, special mention must go to John Sturgeon who whilst fielding in the deep took a nasty blow just above his eye when the ball jumped up and required treatment, (the ugly side of village cricket appeared when their batsmen decided to run a second run despite it being clear John was hurt, which quite rightly offended a few players, especially after Dave had refused a 2nd run in his innings when a Cockerton fielder suffered the same fate!!!), to his credit he came back on the field to bowl the penultimate over a despite getting slapped for a six first bowl then bowled 5 really good deliveries for 1 run to leave Cockerton needing 7 off the last over, they sneaked 2 singles and a four to leave them wanting 1 run off the last two ball, they got them with a maximum to win by 3 wickets with 1 ball to spare. A fantastic match to be involved in, some really good batting and bowling and some really good fielding with both Ritchie and Peter diving around the place like young pups saving runs. Adam Weatherburn ended with career best figures of 4-54, Shanny 2-68 and Martin 1-56. but the guys can be proud of a fine effort with the threadbare bowling attack made all the more hard to accept when the 1st team had 7 bowlers in their game and only used 4 of them. That illusive 3rd victory might not be too far away after that performance and a good hard earned 8 points against a far more experienced team

Week 15

The 1st XI got back to winning ways with a 47 run victory over Rockliffe Park 2nd XI. Unfortunatley the 10 man [only 9 men in the batting line up!!!] 2nd XI lost to a very strong Middleton Tyas 1st XI by 224 runs. Steve is doing a 2nd XI match report - WHO IS GOING TO DO ME A 1st XI REPORT?

2nd XI report

Middleton Tyas verses Haughton Second XI

A very young second team with only 10 men were out classed by the strong league leaders but the lads gave their all and were not too despondent at the finish.

Middleton Tyas 268 for 8.

Tony won the toss and decided to field but the strong batting line up was just a little too much for the Haughton attack. An early break through from Martin Whitfield who beat the batsman all ends up with a great off cutter gave some hope but then the batsmen took control. Martin ended his spell with one for 59.

Steven Richardson came on (who had been dropped form the first team) to stem the runs and after bowling far too many wides ended up with six for 81. Four bowled. One in swinger, one out swinger, two quick ones in succession but missed his hat trick, a superb one handed diving catch from Tony behind and Jonathan ‘safe hands’ Sturgeon started it all off with a catch off Steven’s usual full toss.

The Red Arrows then did a fly by to cap Steven’s fine performance!!! Or maybe they on their way to Sunderland air show?

Matthew Brown got also got one wicket, a catch by Jonathan Sturgeon from his second bowling spell.

Haughton 44 all out.

Batting with only 9 men due to an injury to Paul Dobinson’s finger. Haughton struggled in the rain and with the accurate bowling attack. The only batsmen with any real credit were Martin who scored 12 with a couple of good fours and Adam Weatherburn scored 10 and probably lasted the longest out there.

Young Steven Reid and Jonathan Sturgeon batted well and lasted a couple of overs at the end.

Week 14

Sorry to report both teams lost this weekend -
here is Steve's 1st XI report & Dave has volunteered to do one for the 2nd XI

HCC 2nd XI v Barningham 2nd XI

Tony and his intrepid men took on Barningham 2nds at home on Saturday fielding 6 changes from the previous week, batting first they found it hard going with the opposition opening bowler bowling 9 overs for 9 nines including 7 maidens, Danny and Jeff fell cheaply and when Ashley was out for 16 the team, with the exception of batting sensation Craig struggled to post a big total. Brownie was out for 7, Adam without scoring, Dave Souter for 5 and Tony reached double figures before being runout again. Craig batted superbly finishing with 47 which included 8 boundaries but the final total of 111 - 8 never really looked likely for a win.

Barningham started their innings and after Lewis Mann had taken 2 catches for wickets for Adam their was a glimmer of hope that a victory could be on the cards, unfortunately a very good and quick 3rd wicket partnership by the visitors saw them on the brink of victory. The bowling was diminished even more when Craig injured himself at the end of his 1st over and thankfully Ian Burgess stood in as 12th man and conspired to take a catch to break the 3rd wicket partnership. Barningham eased to victory at the end of the 20th over to finish with 115-3. a hard match against a strong batting team but a brave effort nontheless.

East Cowton verses Haughton First XI.

Another defeat for the team with the batting letting us down again. For the second week running the tail enders helped the team to a decent total and even though they bowled and fielded well the batting total was just a bit too small.

Haughton 149 for 9.

The team got off to a half decent start with Keith McCarthy scoring 24 and Sam getting 10 but the unpredictable bounce off the wicket made it quite difficult to score freely. With a mid order collapse when the big hitters couldn't hit the skin off a rice pudding it was down to seventh, eighth and ninth to get the runs.
Paul Dobinson scored a career best of 41 not out with some cracking boundaries and was unlucky not to get a six as the team thought was over the boundary. His £5.00 bat doing the business!
Young Stephen Allenby scored a great 17 to help the innings along and will be one to watch in the future as he can play the big shots as well as the defensive strokes.
Michael Lunn ended up 5 not out to help the cause.

East Cowton 150 for 2.

Another great effort by the team who kept the run rate down with some good bowling which included Colin Wilkinson who got the two wickets. The first a stumping from Dave Hamer when the ball had outclassed the batsman and the second a fine catch again from Dave standing up to the stumps.
Running out of ideas Sam Bainbridge came on to try some spin bowling and on the whole did a great job, a couple looped over the batsmen’s head and one or two bounced twice before the stumps but for his first attempt at bowling in the league it was a great effort.
The other bowlers chipped away but East Cowton secured the win with five overs remaining in the rain to continue Haughton's disappointing run.

7 a side cup match
Another young HCC team [excluding Dave!!] made a valiant attempt against a strong Rockliffe Park team, but could not match the 147 scored by RPCC in 12 overs.

Week 13 - unfortunately both teams lost this weekend

Dales verses Haughton First XI

Haughton were put into bat first and couldn't bat for toffee apart from one player. Haughton fielded and bowled very well but didn't have enough runs on the board to secure a win.

Haughton 105 all out.

With Dales' slow bowling attack defying the Haughton openers runs were scarce and after 6 overs only 3 runs were on the board.
With batsmen dropping like flies three players scored unlucky thirteens, Sam Bainbridge, Danny McGuire and Colin Wilkinson were the joint second top scorers.
In came Steven Richardson at number eight to double the Haughton score. With Colin sticking around to help, Steven quickly got to grips with the slow bowling and after defending the first shot hit 10 from his first over. A further 7 boundaries followed in his best ever innings which lasted about 15 overs with his unothodox batting style totally confusing the bowlers. Finishing on 48, bowled at the start of the last over he just couldn't make his second ever half centuary.
Mention must also go to John Bainbridge (Sam's Dad) for playing a text book defensive shot that would win defensive shot of the year if we had a trophy.

Dale's 106 for 5 from 30 overs.

Haughton bowled and fielded very tightly and if Dales had to chase a slightly higher total the game would of been close.
Colin Wilkinson bowled very tight and had figures of 3 for 19 which included one caught behind by Sam, one LBW and one tremedous stooping one handed catch by John Bainbridge (I think he thought it was a fish).
Neil Wilkinson got the other two wickets with figures of 2 for 27 which included one bowled and another tremedous one handed slip catch from his Dad Colin.
Michael Lunn and Keith McCarthy also bowled very well during the innings to keep the game alive.
Mention also for Sam Newton who fielded throughout the innings with a torn muscle and gave his all.

Haughton 2nds against Aldbrough St John.

On a gloriously sunny day skipper Tony lost the toss, Aldbrough decided to bat and the innings got underway. Craig and Shanny opened the bowling and Craig took a wicket in the 2nd over, both bowlers bowled well with only 24 runs coming off the 1st 8 overs and Craigs first five overs costing just 11 runs, with the odd dropped catch he could of taken 3 more wickets. Adam Weatherburn and Mattie Brown continued to bowl well with little success and Brownie finally got his reward taking a wicket in his 4th over, a nice catch by Craig. Aldbrough started to up the run rate, particularly off Steve Allenby and Shanny, though Steve was unlucky when a wicked edge smashed into Daves chest behind the stumps, despite his efforts he couldn't taken the catch and ended up doubled over in pain, Ian Burgess offered a rubdown but Dave happily declined the offer!!!!!!
Craig came back into the attack and took 3 more wickets in his last 4 overs, one good catch by Shanny and 2 by Dave behind the stumps including 1 off the last ball off the innings which effectively gained the extra bowling point. Craig finished with 4-48 from 13 overs, Shanny 1-56, Brownie 1-19, Adam 0-27 and Steve 0-17.

In typical 2nd team fashion the tea was once again a fantastic spread, made all the better by Stephen Reid's Dad producing the box of Ice lollies for the team to cool them down (he will do anything to get a mention on the match report).

In reply Tony mixed up the batting order with Steve and Brownie opening, they got off to a comfortable start and added 27 for the 1st wicket before Steve was given out adjudged LBW for the 2nd successive week. Paul was also out to a beauty of a delivery without adding to the total and Brownie was joined by last weeks batting hero Craig, they looked very comfortable and moved the score onto 67 before Brownie was bowled, Dave joined Craig at the wicket only for Craig to be bowled and when Dave was out quite soon after by a nasty delivery that reared up on him the writing was on the wall, Tony was left to watch from the other end as the last 4 batsmen were dismissed without disturbing the scoring and the Aldbrough bowler finished with 2 overs, 2 maidens 4 wickets and no runs. In the end the team was dismissed for 76 and lost by 105 runs.

Another heavy defeat but the lads can still be proud that they worked hard and never gave up against a vastly more experienced and mature team. Well done

Week 12 cup match - Murragh Wilson, away to Middleton Tyas

The 1st team took on Middleton Tyas on Monday Night. The hosts had a strong batting team in form after posting over 300 in their league game on Saturday so it was always going to be a difficult game.

Lunny lost the toss AGAIN and it came as no surprise that Tyas elected to bat, the first few overs from Lunny and Neil were good especially Neil who beat the edge in more than one occasion, the runs were coming freely and after 10 overs the old timers Colin and Jeff came on to bowl, Colin eventually getting the breakthrough in the 11th over when a top edge found Matty Bestford in the deep. The old timers continued to plug away and some poor running from the Tyas players resulted in 2 very easy run outs and Jeff finally got his reward by bowling the Tyas opener, in the end Tyas scored 147-4 in the allotted 20 overs.

In reply Lunny mixed up the order, promoting Dave to open with Gary, the plan seemed to be working as they both got off the mark with boundaries, unfortunately Gary lost a delivery in the setting sun and was clean bowled for 9. Colin came in at 3 and again all seemed to be going well until a brilliant piece of fielding ended Dave's innings, run out for 9. Besty came to the wicket and was getting into the swing of things with a few meaty blows but was out for 14, Danny also looked comfortable but was out for 6 as the middle order tried to pick up the pace, enter Neil, could it be the Wilkinson and son show, it certainly seemed that way as Colin took a back step to allow Neil to Bludgeon the Tyas bowlers, he hit a very rapid 32 with 30 coming in boundaries including 18 off 1 over, he was finally out slogging. Steve Allanby did his job by getting the strike to Colin but when he was out in the penultimate over the writing was effectively on the wall. Colin huffed and puffed and hit a few meaty blows to finish unbeaten on 56 but in the end the innings closed on 141-6 and a defeat by 6 runs.

The game was effectively lost in the extras column with the Tyas innings having 33 extras, but a gallant effort non the less

Week 12 - 1st XI lost at home to Heighington II's, but the 2nds keep rolling on - another great win against King James - REPORTS TO FOLLOW

Haughton First XI verses Heighington Second XI.

A below par batting performance against a strong Heighington team ensured Haughton finished runners up in the tie.

Heighington 142 for 9.

Neil Wilkinson and Michael Lunn opened the bowling with a good tight first spell with Lunny getting the break through with an excellent yorker bowling the opening batsman. Lunny finished on 1 for 16 of his six overs.
Steven Richardson then came on to bowl and in keeping with his unpredictable but effective style got the wickets of the main batting threats.
Two clean bowled and one caught from the ever reliable hands of Jack 'Jar Jar' Binks. Steve also got one run out from the deft fielding of the returning Geoffrey McGuire. Could of also claimed a forth wicket but the umpire deemed the full toss that took the bails clean off and scared the batsman witless to be a no ball. Steve ended up with figures of 3 for 34.
Colin Wilkinson kept the batsmen guessing from the other end but couldn't claim a wicket with his tight bowling.
Geoffrey them came on for his first bowling spell of the season and got a wicket with his first ball caught by Michael Bestford and followed by another two wickets ending up with 3 for 14.
Besty took a supreme catch on the boundary diving and jumping to save a six.
Neil came back on at the end and finished with figures of 1 for 34 and also took one catch.

Haughton 85 all out.

A pretty poor performance with the bat. Our new Father and Son batting team of Geoffrey and Gary McGuire put on 20 with Geoff getting 17 and Gary getting 7 before the rot set in with most of the wickets caught behind to the wicketkeeper. Sam Bainbridge was the only saviour with 36 and lasted to the end not out. Jack Binks smashed an enormous six over 'cow corner' for the only other highlight of the innings.

Haughton 2nds against King James

Its like waiting for an Arriva Bus in the Town Centre, wait for ages and then 2 come along, that is the story of another very good performance by the 2nds on Saturday, wait 11 weeks for a win then 2 in a row.

Anyway the story of the game, after Tony decided to take the team on a tour of Darlington to get on the A68 to Bishop Auckland he lost the toss and not surprisingly King James elected to field. Danny and very temporary opener Dave opened with Dave facing, a nice leg glance of the 3rd ball raced to the boundary but trying to repeat the shot next ball was adjudged out thigh before wicket, off he walked off disgruntled. Danny was joined by Stephen, both batsmen were in form following good knocks for the Under 15s on Friday so high hopes were the order, unfortunately Danny got a jaffa of a delivery which seamed and swung to take off his off bail and was out for 4, enter Craig, just like Martin last week Craig batted out of his skin, together they added 65 for the 3rd wicket in quick time before Stephen was adjudged LBW for a very good 32 including 5 boundaries, Martin Joined Craig and although he couldn't quite repeat last week performance helped Craig got the score up to over 100 in the 20th over, Martin dismissed for 10, Paul came in and was incredibly unlucky, get 2 balls in a row that pitched and bounced no more than 2 inches off the floor, unfortunately the second ball was on middle stump. Mattie Brown came to the crease and contributed 9 including 2 fine boundaries and when he was dismissed with the score on 132 there were fears that the lower order would collapse, how wrong were we, Adam Weatherburn scored his best ever score and together him and Craig added 50 runs, Adam scoring 23 (4 x 4's) and Craig was finally out, well caught for a career best 65 (12 x 4's), the innings finally ended on 183 for 9, another very good performance.

Tea was taken in the nice surroundings of the rugby club bar, complete with Durham playing in the 20 20 live on Sky Sports, King James started their inning as if they were playing 20 20, scoring very fast and heavily with 75 coming from the 1st 9 overs, Martin did take a wicket, a good catch by Brownie Time for Tony's 1st master stroke, bringing Brownie on to ball in place of Shanny, and what a fantastic change, 1st ball reared up towards the batsmens throat, all he could do was lob one up for Brownie to take the catch, queue celebrations and restored belief that the team could still win, 4 balls later and the slower ball from Brownie and another wicket clean bowled, Adam Weatherborn replaced Martin and after a brief disagreement with the umpire over 4 very harsh wides and 2 very close LBW decisions going against him got into the groove, him and Brownie slowed the run rate up with only 40 runs coming from the next ten overs, Brownie picked another wicket up, an easy catch to Paul and finished with very good figures of 5 overs 3-13, Enter Adam to join the party, in his last over the first delivery stayed low and cleaned bowled the batsmen, next delivery, same result, queue loads of vocals for Adam, could he do what Gary had failed to do a for the 1st few weeks earlier and take a hat trick, the field came in, the ball was bowled and the batsmen played the shot, it stayed in the air for a short time and feel just short of Craig. Adam finished with figures of 6 overs 1 maiden 2-16. Stephen came on for a few overs and Martin returned, Stephen kept his head after the first 2 balls were leg side wides that raced to the boundary and his 3rd ball was called a no ball to get a delivery that popped up and gave Craig the easiest of catches, he finished with 2 overs 1-2. With King James only playing 10 men the last two wickets still needed to be taken and it was left to Martin to sign off in style with 2 clean bowled deliveries to finish with 3-35 his last 3 overs only conceding 3 runs and taking 2 wickets to dismiss the hosts for 137. Another great performance and the way the team rallied after such a poor start to the hosts innings is testament that the team is gelling and supporting each other.

WEEK 11 - no apologies for putting the 2nd team result before the 1st XI - the seconds have won a game - hip hip hooray!!

Haughton 2nds against Trimdon CCCA 2nds

With the demise of the England Cricket team in the recent shambolic performances against Sri Lanka maybe Duncan Fletcher needs to visit Great Burdon and have a look at the all rounder that is, Martin Whitfield, Sunday 2 July will go down in history as Martin Whitfield day, a career best batting performance, followed by a career best bowling performance set up
a first victory of the season, though it should also be noted that the rest of the team all contributed.

Ashley won the toss and elected to bat, leaving Trimdon to soak up the very hot conditions, it looked like being a mistake when Danny and Steve were both out cheaply but Richie joined Ashley and preceded to settle the ship, unfortunaltly shortly after Ash dragged on to his stumps when he had scored 16 to leave us at 30-3. Dave came to the crease, played and missed, found the edge and mistimed nearly every shot but dropped anchor after Richie had ran himself out for 24 when the score was on 62, enter Whitfield, 1st short ball, a swing and a miss, a quite word from Dave telling him to bat cautiously and stay at the crease worked, they shared in a 57 run partnership, with Martin playing the aggressor and Dave being unusually quiet, a rush of blood to the head saw Dave bowled for 18 and this bought Craig to the crease, him and Martin forced the pace and at the end of the allotted 35 overs they had shared in an unbroken partnership of 69, Craig unbeaten on 18 and Martin a career best 74 not out which included 14 fours. The innings ended on 188-5, by far the highest score of the season by the 2nd team.

A fantastic tea was served and thanks must go to everyone who contributed the excellent spread with particular mention to Stephen Reid's Dad for providing the spicy chicken Goujons with chilli sauce, I don't know if they all went but Dave was sweating for all of the Trimdon innings and it wasn't just because of the harsh weather conditions.

Trimdon started their innings well and cautiously and looked to be comfortable, Craig, by his own admission didn't bowl too well, maybe down to the brand new ball we were using but Martin was starting to look dangerous with their openerss finding the edge and playing and missing quite a lot, Shanny replaced Craig and made the breakthrough, getting a faintest of edges for Dave to take a simple catch behind, not to be outdone Martin then removed the other opener in the same way, Shanny continued to bowl well but Martin was the predator waiting for the bad shots and preceded to take a wicket in each of his next two overs to really put the pressure on Trimdon which lead to big swings on good length bowls with the nice sound of leather on stumps, Martin finished his spell by picking up another 3 wickets, two cleaned bowled and a very good one handed take by Dave when he was going the other way, Martin finished with brilliant figures of 10 overs 2 maidens 6 for 17, Stephen Allenby and Danny came on to bowl and both got wickets, Steve found the edge for another good juggling catch by Dave (4 catches in 1 match and only 1 bye in the whole innings) and Danny wrapped up the innings with 2 wickets, the first one when he decided to come around the wicket and clean bowled the batsmen and the last a top edge very well caught by John Sturgeon. Trimdon were all out for 87 with Danny finishing with 2-13, Stephen 1 - 11 and Shanny 1-24. The youngsters, John Sturgeon,Sam Newton and Stephen Reid all fielded very well keeping the boundaries to a minimum. A great team performance which has been coming for a few weeks at last gave the team their first win of the season.

Week 11 - 1st XI away to Trimdon CCA 1st XI - HCC lost by 6 wickets - no report from Steve this week, but hopefully I'll convince Paul to do a report - watch this space!!

Here it is - HCC 1st XI v Trimdon CCA 1st XI [thanks Paul]

On the second hottest day of the year, Haughton made the trip to play Trimdon CCA. With the confusion of playing on a Sunday, people meeting at the wrong place, and half the team ending up in Coxhoe, it was amazing that we turned up with eleven players to start at the right time!

Anyway, Sam won the toss and elected to bat first, leaving Trimdon to get baked in the field whilst we all caught a few rays. Gary and Sam opened and got off to decent (if not fortunate) start, and put on 30 for the first wicket before Sam was out for 10. Next in was Mark who scored 12 before being caught out. Gary was then out for 15 to a slightly dubious LBW decision, leaving the father/son partnership of Colin and Neil to settle the ship. The only problem being that Neil decided to try and hit his first ball back to Darlington and was subsequently clean bowled.

Colin was then joined by Matt, and these two batted well together keeping the scoreboard moving, before both fell quickly, Matt for 29 and Colin for 35. Keith added a quick fire 16, before the tail capitulated, with Tom adding one run, Paul out first ball, and Michael also out first ball. This left Lewis in at the end scoring two not out.

With 141 on the board, spirits were high as on a fairly poor wicket the score looked competitive, so the ten men of Haughton (Tom had to go home) set about defending the total.

Trimdon started well, and the opening bat scored freely as both Michael and Neil struggled with the new ball, and in the first 10 overs had put on 50 without loss. The Trimdon running was “interesting,” and inevitably it was a run out that brought the first wicket. An excellent direct hit from Mark with only one a half stumps to aim at. Soon after Sam also managed a dubious run out, with their umpire possibly looking the wrong way!!!

When Keith and Colin began to slow the scoring rate, it looked as if we still had a chance, and Keith picked up a deserved wicket lifting spirits further. Gary came on to bowl and managed to pick up a wicket with his first ball, and it looked like we still had a good chance. However, it was not to be, a dropped catch from Sam “I’ve never dropped a slip catch before” Bainbridge near the end brought much amusement to all, and even the last three balls from Mark at the end were not enough to save Haughton from defeat.

Overall, we were beaten by a strong Trimdon side, who appeared to have a couple of stronger players due to the game being played on a Sunday, were just too strong for us, but with the second half of the season beginning now, we are still very much in contention for promotion.

EGGLESTONE CUP AWAY TO BARNINGHAM - match report

Lunny lost the toss AGAIN and Barningham elected to bat, despite some good bowling early on, and a touch aggressive by Neil, Barningham got off to a good start scoring quite freely, Neil finally got the breakthrough with the score on 55, an easy catch by Danny, Lunny was unsuccesful and Neil finished with 1-36, Keith came on and tightened the ship, bowling a good line he took a wicket in his second over, the faintest of edges by the Barningham captain to Dave behind the stumps, he showed excellent sportsmanship by walking and not waiting for the umpire to make the decision, Adam Weatherburn came on for the 17th over and took a wicket with his first ball, a top edge comfortably taken by Dave, Barningham finished with a very good score of 137-3 wickets though the wicket total could of been higher with 2 very close stumpings and two dropped catches..

Haughton came out to bat with Danny and Gary opening again, after a careful start it was Danny that started to flourish, Gary was out to a top edge for 12 and when Jeff came to the crease Danny became the senior player! Jeff was controversially given out run out by the same umpire who missed the two earlier stumpings and Danny was finally out for 34 which included a huge six over the wall and 5 fours. Neil got bogged down by some short bowling and was finally out for 8 and it was left to Dave to swing the willow, he finished with a season best 42 not out which included 4 sixes (2 off the last two balls of the innings over the wall) and 2 fours, Keith was out stumped and walked rather than wait for the umpire to give the decision and the team finished on 112 - 6 falling short by 25 runs. Not disgraced in anyway against a very strong A division team it proved to be an A Division team too far but credit to the lads for never giving up and keeping their heads up.

Week 10

1st XI go top of the league with a close victory over Barton II - 2nds lose to top of the league Eryholme, but were certainly not disgraced.
REPORTS TO FOLLOW

1st XI report

Haughton first XI verses Barton.

In what turned out to be a tense win for Haughton and possibly with a little help from 'Karma' the team now sit proudly at the top of the league.
Another solid batting performance helped the team to a good victory.

Barton 163 for 6.

With an unusually below par bowling performance with the exception of Gary Maguire (who gets his own paragraph later) Haughton struggled with the direct batting performance of Barton and used seven bowlers. With every slog into the air the Barton batsmen could muster and there was over ten to choose from the Haughton fielders were never under the ball or in the right place at the right time. Only the new and very good wicketkeeper Matt East got to catch the ball from Michael Lunn's bowling for the first wicket. It was getting a bit frustrating until our eleventh player turned up two hours late to take what will be probably the best catch of the season and start Gaz on his way to an ever so nearly, frustratingly close, couldn't get any nearer hat trick.
Imagine the scene, the ball gets skied right the way up, Jack 'jar-jar' Binks runs 30 yards from mid on, lunges at the ball as it nears the ground it sticks in his hands as he bundled over. Because of his velocity? Or was it a rabbit hole? One wicket to Gaz.
Gaz runs in to bowl his second ball, the batsman lobs it up to mid off and Ryan Pritchard takes a comfortable catch. Two to Gaz.
Hat trick ball, the pressure is on, Gaz runs up delivers the ball, the batsman as cool as you like dollies the ball back to Gaz with about as much pace as Colin Wilkinson running for a third run, the ball bounces out of Gaz's palms he flaps a couple of times doing a reasonable impression of Pingu and the ball gently lands on the ground. Geoff nearly falls from the wall he is perched on laughing!
Unlucky Gaz.
Gaz finishes with 4 - 27 after an excellent display.

Haughton 165 for 7.

After loosing a couple of early wickets Haughton got into their stride with Gary McGuire scoring 43 and again with the Father and Son partnership of Colin and Neil Wilkinson firing on all cylinders it was looking like an easy win until the were both out in short succession. Colin scoring another great half century of 56 and Neil scoring 35 from 20 ball which included 6 fours but was caught out on the boundary going for a six.
Matt East, Tom Smith and Jar-jar Binks failed to wrap the win up with Jack being out to a dubious catch, it was left to Michael Lunn and Steven Richardson to secure the win with only an over left, these two renowned batsmen clearly knowing what they were doing finally got the winning runs with the help of the stumps. The ball actually clipped leg stump without removing the bails and deceived the wicket keeper for the winning two byes. Maybe 'Karma' was righting a wrong. Who knows?

2nd XI report

The seconds took on league leaders Eryholme on Saturday and despite putting up a brave performance lost by 8 wickets, batting first Richie and Ashley set about the Eryholme attack with some meaty blows on the hosts small ground, they added 80 for the first wicket in the first seventeen overs, Ritchie was finally out for 27 which included 6 fours, Danny and Dave didnt last too long scoring 6 and 9 respectively and the middle order got a bit bogged down with only 20 runs coming from 7 overs near the end, Ashley was finally dismissed for a fantastic 77(6 sixes and 7 fours), it was left to Steven Allenby to finish the innings with a flourish hitting 28 (1 six and 4 fours), the innings finishing on 166 for 8 wickets.

Tea was served (and very nice it was too) and when Eryholme came out to bat it was the same story of what if, far too many catches were put down at least 6, and the openers started the run chase in patient fashion, the put on 112 for the opening wicket and despite Danny picking up two wickets, both good catches in the deep by Shanny and Adam Weatherburn Eryholme got to their total in the 34th over, on the positive Adam Weatherburn continued to bowl well and on another day Martin would of picked up 4 wickets with dropped catches, the spirit in the team remains high despite no victories but the last 3 games have produced a great improvement amongst the team, hopefully the bowling department may be a bit stronger in the near future with hopefully Craig and Brownie returning to the fold. Beaten but not disgraced in any way.

SOME UNDER 15 MATCH REPORTS WOULD BE USEFUL TO KEEP THINGS ON THE WEB UPTO DATE - PLEASE!!!!!

***********************

THIS WEEK's CUP MATCH - MONDAY NIGHT [19 JUNE] , CEC LEECE - SPENNITHORNE AND HARMBY - LOST

Stand in Captain Michael lost the toss and Spennythorne elected to bat, with a dream start Neil took a wicket with the first delivery of the match dismissed their captain caught behind after a neat catch from Tom. Adam opened at the other end and continued where he left off on Saturday causing their batsmen problems and not conceding many runs, after Neil took another two wickets the run rate slowed down, Neil finished with fine figures of 3-21, Gary bowled well and finished with 1-24, his one wicket being a catch that was so high it had snow on it by the time Dave took a good catch. Adam finished with 1-13 from his 3 overs his wicket was thanks to a good catch by Jack. Colin and Lunny finished off the overs with Mike taking 2-16, Colin was wicket less for a change but still bowled very economically but took a very good one handed catch, the other wicket to fall was some great fielding from Neil with a direct hit run out, Spennythorne finished with 92-8 from their 22 overs.

Haughton started their innings and never really got going, wickets fell steadily but nobody really got a hold of the innings, Colin finished with 23, Jack 14 (including 2 huge sixes), Dave 13 and Neil 11, in the end Haughton fell short by 8 runs finishing the innings on 84-7.

Week 9

1st XI lost at Cliffe - with probably the youngest ever HCC 1st XI - report to follow from Steve [hopefully!!] - here it is!!!!!

Cliffe verses Haughton first XI.

With what must surely be the youngest Haughton first team ever since records began, with an average age of 19.2 years the young guns gave a spirited performance but unfortunately lack of experience with the bat let them down slightly and lost the match by 55 runs. But there was some great pluses to be taken from the performance.

Cliffe - 178 for 4.

An excellent fielding performance from the team in the hot and muggy conditions, the lads didn't let their heads drop once. After two early wickets the lads were buoyant but the incoming Cliffe batsmen thought differently and batted for the rest of the 37 overs. Stephen Allenby caught two great catches on the boundary, Steven Richardson took the other catch and Neil Wilkinson bowled the other wicket.
Jack Binks, Paul Dobinson, Stephen Allenby and Lewis Mann were the busiest in the field with great performances and good bowling from Michael Lunn, Neil Wilkinson, Craig Day and Steven Richardson made sure Cliffe didn't score too many boundaries on their small ground.

Haughton - 123 all out.

After batting the last three batsmen first because the girls had to go to a football 'do', three early wickets with two daft run out's left Haughton under pressure early. Sam Bainbridge steadied the ship and his partnership with Jack Binks (who scored a great 19 with some excellent fours) looked good until the untimely run out. Sam went on to score 56 and be at the crease at the end but Haughton just lacked the experience with the bat to ensure enough runs were made. Danny McGuire scored 12, Paul Dobinson scored 10 and Lewis Mann scored 8 and helped Sam for half an hour but as the overs ran out and Sam was pushing for boundaries he got caught out. Steven Richardson (the daddy of the team) was as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike with zero and Craig Day got 1 not out from two balls.

The young team should be proud of their spirited performance and will bounce back to winning ways next week.

Haughton 2nds' against Cliffe 2nds.

Cliffe 2nds won by 5 wickets.

On a gloriously warm day Dave, the stand in captain, won the toss and elected to bat. Richie made a welcome return to open the innings with Adam Weatherburn. Adam didnt last long and when Shanny was also out cheaply it was up to Dave and Ritchie to settle the innings, Ritchie was finally out for 19, thereafter a quick succession of wickets fell, with Dave dismissed for 36 including 2 sixes. Both Stephen Reid and Jonathon Sturgeon bating well at the end the team passed the 100 barrier to finish with 105 all out of 34.3 overs.

Tea was taken and with the weather becoming more humid Haughton attempted to dismiss the visitors. Martin again bowled through the innings, taking 3-49 from 16 overs, he did however have two dropped catches as well but at least this week he managed to finally find the edge of the bat. Shanny bowled from the other end and bowled neatly in his 5 overs conceding 20 runs, Adam Weatherburn also bowled and after a dodgy start bowled really well and tightly, only conceding 18 runs off his 5 overs. Norman bowled 7 tidy overs taking 1 for 14, the last wicket to fall being a direct hit run out by Dave. In the end Cliffe reached their target after 33 overs, another case of if only we had scored another 20 runs and if only the catches had stuck, The fielders certainly played their part only conceding 6 boundaries in the whole innings. A very good team performance especially with the lack of regular bowlers in the team, it was especially good to see Ritchie back, and hopefully when Ashley has had a few weeks with his baby he too will return.
