Weeks 17 to 22 - 2006 season
bold on] WEEK 22 - YES, END OF THE SEASON!!! 1sts lost and 2nds won against Trimdon CCA - reports to follow from Dave. I understand the bat raffle was won by Colin Wilkinson - does he know what to do with it?
Haughton 2nds against Trimdon CCA 2nds
Tony and his band of merry men made the shortish trip to Trimdon on Saturday; Tony again the leader did his usual scenic route when we arrived in Trimdon with 3 cars doing a tour of the housing estate near the ground. With Haughton only able to muster 9 players for the game it was with some relief that Trimdon could also only manage a team of 9, (it was only going to be 8 batsmen or so we thought, more on that later)
Tony won the toss and decided to bat, Ash and Ritchie opened, the wicket was certainly doing stuff with Ritchie in particular getting peppered on more than one occasion, Ash dropped anchor and after seeing off the opening bowlers the team thought the run rate would increase, . Ritchie was the first to unleash the shackles swinging at a few and getting dropped by a difficult chance, but he was then caught in the next over for a season best 33 to leave the score on 61 after 23 overs, Danny joined Ash at 3 and proceeded to do the “yes no yes no” run routine and ran Ash out much to his disgust and annoyance, Ash finishing with 11. Craig came to the wicket and these two both batted well, Danny hitting a couple of boundaries and Craig playing the “See how many times they will drop me today routine” (I think it was three in the end!) Danny was then well caught and bowled for 22 and Dave joined him at the crease, determined to end the season on a high he swung for everything and was bowled for a really pathetic score of 3. Craig was also out swinging as the overs came to and end, caught well near the boundary for 23 . It was left to Tony and Shanny to finish the innings off, ending with the score on 128 – 5 from the 35 overs with Tony getting 15 not out.
The usual Ham and Pease Pudding sandwiches were served (accompanied by some decent grub) and Trimdon set off in their pursuit of the score. Craig and Adam Weatherburn opened and it was Adam who broke the deadlock with 2 wickets in 2 balls, and 3 in 2 overs, 1 a superb low catch from Danny (Yes I said Danny) and also a straight forward catch from Ritchie, no hat trick again but the pressure was starting to tell especially when Craig got one to nip back and the opener nicked the ball to Dave behind the stumps to take a good catch. Tony’s master stroke bringing Jonathon Sturgeon on to bowl his slower deliveries, it worked a treat with him picking a wicket up in his first over, a plumb back foot LBW, Shanny also took a good catch and Dave took another stumping (his best of the season) to give Jonathon 3 wickets. With Trimdon on 79 – 7 the game was won, OR WAS IT, step forward the Trimdon number 9, a player who had been playing with 2 broken fingers and could only bat one handed, what followed then was a compete and utter joke, rubbish fielding, overthrows, dropped catches (though not that easy) and the one handed bandit hitting the ball all over the place including a quite superb drive back over the bowlers head (the bowler shall remain nameless) for a superb 4. Lady luck was starting to shine for the home team and with the sun setting, mist approaching and darkness descending Adam finally got the last wicket, the one armed bandit hitting a well timed shot straight at Tony for the catch (though the batsmen thought it was a bump-ball) with the score on 123, a victory by 5 runs. Relief all-round for Haughton in a game played in a very good spirit. On the bowling front Adam finished with season best figures of 4-35, Jonathon Sturgeon 3-15 and Craig getting the other wicket. The season ended on a high with the team winning 3 of the last 4 games.
WEEK 21 - 1st XI had a comfortable win over Barton 2nds and the 2nd XI lost to a very strong Eryholme team - reports to follow
Two reports from Dave [thanks again]
Haughton 1sts against Barton 2nds
Sam won the toss and on a nice sunny late summer afternoon elected to bat, Jeff and Gary opened and got off to a fine start, runs coming freely and neither looking in any real difficulty, that was until Jeff was out for 19 when the score was 51 in the 13th over. Sam came to the crease and the 2 under 18’s both batted superbly with Sam getting off the mark with a six, boundaries were at a premium on the big ground but they continued to score at a decent rate, with the occasional boundary and in Gary’s case, 5 runs for hitting a helmet (incorrectly added to Gary’s innings), both reached their respective half centuries, both off singles until in the last over Sam ran Gary out for 78 after they had added 119 for the second wicket, Sam remained unbeaten on 52 (playing for his averages) and the team finished on 172-2 in their 35 overs.
Barton started their innings and wickets fell at a steady rate, with father and son combo Colin and Neil both bowling very economically with only 26 runs coming off the first 14 overs, they both took wickets with Adam Weatherburn taking a catch to give Colin the first wicket before 4 clean bowled wickets were claimed, Neil finished his spell with 2-19 and the team decided to give the less experienced bowlers a few overs, Steve Allenby bowled well with 10 runs coming from his 5 overs, and Adam also bowled well though he did lose the chance of a wicket with his first ball when he spilled a straightforward catch, he did make up for it though and finished with 1-7 from his 3 overs, Danny was unlucky and finished with 0-8 from his 3 but with Colin finishing with 4-23 from 11 overs the writing really was on the wall when the ball was tossed to firstly Paul who, once he had found it was better to bounce the ball before the batsmen took a wicket in his 3rd over and finished with 1-5 (including 2 maidens), to wrap up the innings Lewis balled his high speed turbo charged lobs and also took a wicket in his 2 overs for 7 runs before the innings was wrapped up with a straightforward run out to dismiss Barton for 84 and win by 88 runs.
Haughton 2nds against Eryholme
Haughton took on first placed champions elect Eryholme at Great Burdon with Ash winning the toss and electing to bat. Eryholme clearly wanted the victory which would all but guarantee promotion and with the aid of some dodgy batting clearly had the measure of the home team, Ritchie chased after a high wide one and edged behind, Ash failed to pick the slower ball and was caught and bowled, Dave and Norman both top edged and Martin played across the line and was clean bowled, only Ash with 12 and Martin with 10 made double figures, though Norman came close after crashing a sweet stroke to the boundary, making 9. John Sturgeon was very unlucky to be caught to a very good shot after he creamed an over pitched delivery to mid on and the innings capitulated with the team being all out for just 47.
Tea was served at 3.15 (and what a tea as well), enough food to have fed the 1sts. Eryholme then came out to bat, no sign of rain, and despite some decent bowling and many LBW appeals only took the one wicket when Shanny clean bowled the opener, he took 1-1 from 3 overs and John Sturgeon and Norman bowled 6 overs between them for 12 runs.
Despite the heavy defeat the team spirits were still high and you would have thought it was Eryholme that had been thrashed by the lack of smiles on their faces. Both teams are looking forward to hopefully ending the season on a high when they take on Trimdon in a double header in the last game of the season on Saturday.
WEEK 20 - both matches rained off
WEEK 19 - 1st XI's game at league leaders, Brompton, was the victim of the rain - match abandoned at an interesting stage. The 2nd XI achieved a great victory over Raby 2nds, by 4 wickets. PLEASE PLEASE can I have a couple of reports? I would also like to hear about the Under 15 season
Two reports from Ace Reporter Dave - thanks again
Week 19 match Reports
Haughton 1sts V Brompton on Swale.
Haughton took on table topping promotion chasing Brompton on Swale on Saturday. Sam won the toss and on a cloudy day elected to bat, the wicket can best be described as a typical end of season wicket with a small strip rolled into the outfield. Keith and Tom Smith opened and all appeared to be going well but it was soon established that boundaries would be very difficult to get with a big boundary, very long and wet grass and some tight bowling. In the 4th over Keith turned one off his legs and the oldest played in the opposition dived full length to take a fantastic one handed catch, not too sure who was more surprised, Sam came to the wicket and decided to drop anchor, Tom was unlucky to be bowled off an inside edge and his big toe and Craig came to the wicket looking determined to continue his recent good form., unluckily for Craig after he middled a cracking shot another superb one handed catch sent him back to the pavilion. Dave joined Sam and they struggled for runs, scrapping the odd single until, finally in the 18th over a boundary was hit, a sweetly timed pull shot from Dave for a maximum, he immediately followed that up with another pull over the deep mid wicket for a one bounce four and moved quickly into double figures, It was all too good to be true though as in the next over, despite noticing the field changes he attempted another big pull and was caught on the boundary for 11. Jack didn’t really help the cause and Neil was also out cheaply (though he did hit a boundary), Davie Edwards then joined the fun, hitting 2 boundaries (with Dave’s bat) but was out for 13 and Sam’s marathon innings finally ended when he had reached 27 (off 27 overs). John Bambridge and Lewis then scrapped a few more runs to the cause but in the end Haughton were all out for a below par 95.
During the tea interval the black clouds started to form and low and behold, after just 2 balls of the reply the heavens opened, a delay of 20 odd minutes and Haughton were straight back into the action with Keith taking a neat catch of Neil at the end of the first over, if Lewis had managed to take either of the two difficult catches soon after Brompton would have been in serious trouble, as it was Davie clean bowled the Brompton Captain (after a quick check with the umpire that he was bowled), soon after and with the black clouds forming again Keith took another catch and Davie took another wicket the heavens opened again, 15 minutes later and common sense prevailed and the match was abandoned with Brompton 54-4. Davie Edwards taking 3 wickets and Neil the other one. It was fair to say that Haughton had the better of play when the rain started and it could have been a very interesting game, the match was played in a great friendly spirit throughout.
Haughton 2nds V Raby Castle 2nds.
On a bright windy day Tony won the toss and elected to field, with team availability a problem and a late drop out Haughton only had 10 players until Ian Burgess arrived and agreed to field throughout the innings, Thank you Ian and we will NOT mention the dropped catch again!!!! Martin and Shanny opened the bowling with Martin bowling very well, only 3 runs from his first 6 overs, Shanny was off the radar for a change so Tony brought Brownie on to replace him, he too bowled very well with his first 5 overs only costing 11 runs, finally in the 16th over, with the score on 48 a wicket, a run out by Ian [yes – he did run out the man we didn’t want out!!!], and in Martins 11th over he too got in on the act taking the 2nd wicket Adam also took a wicket in is 1st over, a good catch by Ash and it was all looking quite good, runs off the bat were at a premium unfortunately there were far too many extras conceded and this kept the run rate ticking over, all the bowlers got in on the act to eventually restrict the visitors to 132 – 7, Martin taking 3-50 off his 18 overs, Brownie 1-28 off 9 and Adam Weatherburn 2-17 from his 6. Shanny and Martin also took catches.
After another good tea was served Haughton came out to bat, yet another opening combination Ash and Paul, opened (Paul had to leave early) he was bowled in the 5th over with the score on 24 and in the next over Ash was also out for 13. Peter Whitfield and Brownie then both batted sensibly before Peter was out for 11, Tony went in higher up the order than normal and together they looked in good shape until Brownie had visions of getting his name in the Sunday Sun and was stumped charging down the wicket to Peter Jackson, he was out for 27 and Tony also fell for a solid innings of 20. It was up to Martin and Adam to chase down the runs but when Martin was dismissed for 13 a minor panic started to set in, though after the last victory over Catterick we should have more faith in Shanny’s batting, together the 2 Adams got the team home in the 32nd over with Adam W getting 21 not out and Shanny 8 not out. Another good victory from the lads, well done.
Week 18 - 1st XI lost to Spennymoor by 44 runs - hopefully I will get a report from someone. The 2nd team game nearly got started, but was eventually a victim of the rain
Week 17 - it would appear from the Sunday Sun that the 1st XI got well "stuffed" by Middleton in Teesdale, but the 2nds achieved a great victory - I look forward to getting TWO match reports
Colin Branch cup report and 2nd XI victory report follow:-
The First Team took on Heighington in the Colin Branch Trophy away last Wednesday in a 15 over slogathon.
Haughton batted first with Gary and Makeshift opener Dave Opening the innings. A steady start but when dave at scored 14 including 3 boundaries impatience got the better of him and he was caught slogging. Gary made 17, neil whacked a few boundaries in his short innings but Sam played a blinding captains innings, scoring 40 in quick time. Stephen Allenby and Binky ensured the score past the 100 mark, the innings finishing on 110. Heighington's openers looked strong and comfortable against some good bowling particularly from Neil but they always looked safe. Sam bowled an over of spin which is best left forgotten about and Gary bowled his spin mix to very good effect and after some really sharp keeping from Dave who took a stumping took the only wicket. Shanny bowled an excellent over conceding only 2 runs but victory was wrapped up fro Heighington with 7 bowls to spare.
Haughton 2nds against Catterick Village
On a windswept cloudy afternoon Tony won the toss and elected to field against high flying promotion chasing Catterick Village. It was a good decision as bowling with a brand new ball Martin and Craig bowled tightly early on keeping the runs to a minimum. The bowling attack was strengthened with Dave Edwards also in the starting line up, he came on in the 11th over and Shanny also came on for his spell. It was Shanny that finally got the breakthrough in the 25th over when their opener was caught on the Sedgefield Road boundary by Dave Edwards, 3 overs later and Dave took another stumping from Dave's bowling and proceded to do a Panasar down the wicket much to the amusement of the Catterick opener NOT. Wickets started to fall steadily with Shanny bowling without doubt his best spell of the season finishing with 3 for 24 from his 6 overs, 2 catches from Martin and Tom accounting for the wickets. Martin replaced Shanny for the last 2 overs from the farmers Field end and Super catcher Ritchie took two easy catches to ensure Catterick finished with 123-6 in 35 overs. Martin finished with 2-29 from his 12 overs, and dave 1-34 from his 12.
Albert again did us proud with a fantastic tea and when haughton batted Ritchie and Danny both looked in control until Danny middled a leg side bowl straight to the fielder and Ritchie was bowled, enter Craig and Dave. Craig looked really easy at the crease and continued his batting success, Dave scored 9 when he inside edged the ball onto his back leg and onto the stumps, and when Dave Edwards came in to bat all looked well, he smashed a ball onto the Sedgefield Road for a maximum with the ball we think landing in a flatbed on route to Teeside before he tried to repeat the shot but edged the ball flush into his face, a minute later he looked like the elephant man and could not continue to bat, Tony didn't last long but Shanny proved he could bat when he also smashed an offside six onto the Sedgefield Road, they got the score up to 116 and within touching distance when Shanny was out for 10, Craig superbly caught and balled for an excellent 44 and Steve Reid without scoring. Finger nails bitten, 8 runs to win, Dave in pain but willing to go in at 11, enter the mad running between the wicket from John Sturgeon and Tom Ketley, what followed was comical, suicidal and very entertaining but in the end victorious, they scambled the runs to win by 2 wickets and Dave could relax. A great win, hard work but great fun as well.
The second team would like to wish Steve and his family a great deal of luck in their adventure and also thank him for the 2nd team best bowling performance of the season 6 - 81 in the thrashing by Middleton Tyes. Hopefully one of the bowlers will better that in the last 5 games of the season.
1st XI report follows. The last ever from Steve as they set off for their fantastic adventure - all at HCC wish them all the very best.
Middleton Teesdale verses Haughton First XI.
Steven Richardson's last game for a while ended in defeat as Haughton were out batted in blustery Teesdale. All of Middleton Teesdale's slogging went between the fielders and all of Haughton's slogging went to hand.
Middleton Teesdale 191 for one. (30 over game).
After a promising start with Neil Wilkinson bowling well and Steven Richardson swinging the ball like a banana. Steve was unlucky to have a thick edge given not out. That was probably a pivotal moment as the batsman went on to get 67. The other young opening batsman played extremely well and ended up on 97. He was run out right at the end as he trying to get his century.
Haughton used an array of bowling with Gaz doing some spin and Mark Dobinson getting in on the act. Keith McCarthy probably had the most economical spell.
Haughton 120 all out.
Haughton got of to a fairly good start and after 15 overs were actually ahead of the Middleton score but had lost four wickets.
Sam and Gaz batted extremely well with some great boundary shots until getting caught going for some big hits. Sam hit a blinding six straight onto the pavilion roof.
A bit of a collapse followed with the team trying to push for the boundary.
Neil just couldn't hit it far enough, Colin was bowled and Paul Dobinson were out in quick succession.
Steven Richardson entered the fray and got a couple of boundaries and played his first ever proper forward defensive shot. The tail end couldn't hold out and he ended on 15 not out.
Middleton put on there star bowler a 4' 6'' eleven year old who could spin a cracking ball, he sent one down to Mr Bainbridge Senior started it of two foot down leg and cut it back to remove John's off stump.
Comedy moment of the match was when Gaz got hit plumb in the nuts and the thud of ball on box was audible in his native Weardale.
